Hi, I don’t know what is going on but I see only Anne’s post today. And Barbie yesterday. Sorry for missing everyone!
Anne, you have had an interesting (is that the proper word) bunch of neighbors. I hope you get some nice and quiet folks soon.
Barbie, it was very nice of your neighbor to send a condolence card. She must be a kind soul.
I did make my trip to the grocery store with a stop by the library this morning. I should have waited a while this morning as the store hadn’t been fully re-stocked. They were just getting started. There were a lot of empty spaces. Darn.
After I got home and put away my supplies, I spent the remainder of today, following up on missing packages (and I actually did get a response from one company). Another company does not have a working phone and it has been out of order for a week, they haven’t answered my online inquiry. I am wondering what’s going on. I paid some bills, balanced my checkbook, and ordered some lettuce seed.
I planted more lettuce seed this morning before going to the grocery store as nothing had come up yet. When I got home, the area in the co tai er where I had planted was all dug up. Yes, darn squinnies/chipmunks/or whatever you want to call them. I had not been bothered by them this year. Only squirrels, bunnies and birds. These critters are insidious diggers. So I out a metal wire cover over the area but need more lettuce seed. I also covered my zucchini container which has sprouting seedlings right now. So a lot of gardening, dug out another container which I will plant tomorrow, fertilized several containers, watered everything and did a bit of hand cultivating. So, I gardened on my deck for quite a while today. Who would have thought that was possible. 🙂
I picked more of my produce and had to stay away from the pots of potatoes because I wanted to dig around in them for another potato. 🙃
It has been mostly clunky here today with temperatures staying under 80 degrees F. I love that!
No card assembly today. My shoulder says it needs a break. It wins!
Take care everyone.

It’s been one of those days! All my plans went to pot what with one interruption after another until late afternoon when I managed to drive to town for fuel for the car, a couple of cards, stamps and car wash. Up early tomorrow as I’m driving to Plymouth for what was supposed to be a short celebration of a departed wife of someone I worked with. It’s turned into a full blown Catholic Church service followed by readings, a eulogy and tea and biscuits. I will wear a mask, especially as friends have returned from a week in Scotland with Covid. They feel well but tests show they are still infected.
All that rain yesterday did my veggie garden a power of good. Here’s a few beans and peas picked for this evening’s meal.
The purple mange tout are delicious and peas very sweet.
I’d better get to bed as I will be walking George and Betty before leaving.

I was so busy all day I never got to post but will try to catch up tomorrow.

I think today will be very quiet but it is a bit cooler so me and Jilly Bean will go for a longer walk.
My house is 100 years old next year and is surrounded by much newer homes. I guess there was no rules in those far off days and so my place juts out and is closer to the sidewalk than everybody else. Thats okay but I have a side window and my sofa in the LR is opposite this side window which in turn overlooks next doors drive. This means of course as I sit writing on my laptop, Bean and I can see what's going on in the house next door. I don't want to and maybe they can see me! No problem on the other side because bathroom and bedrooms face Maria. The point is I don't really want to see the new folk and their worldly goods drifting past my eyes, so on the next move day I shall keep the blinds firmly closed! I'd move the sofa as well if I could but it is in the best position opposite the side window.
I suppose I will eventually meet the new folk and will let you all know, but I hope they are quiet and introverted after the last 30 odd years!
I think Patsy posted after me on the previous page Lin. The chipmunks appear to be the culprits eating my Beetroot leaves. I've two ready for todays meal. I wish I could post pictures but don't know how on this laptop. Mike chose it for me but Mark loathes it the few times he's used it.
Its August Bank holiday on Monday so I must figure out my order for this weekend in case there's the usual problem stampede with getting a spot on the delivery van.

We are enjoying lots of sunshine without the heat of last week and my trip to Plymouth was easy considering it was rush hour time. I had a rough idea where the Catholic Church was for the service but as I spotted a large sign on the side of the road directing traffic off to get to it, I was already past the turn so had to get off at the next exit and work my way back. The city has expanded a lot since I worked there many years ago so I found myself faced with housing that hadn’t existed back then. I finally walked into the church with less than five minutes before Mass and rather than wear a mask I sat to one side of the congregation where it was quiet. The eulogy was heartfelt and the priest genuinely caring as he kept an eye on my grieving friend and his son. We had coffee and biscuits in a side room afterwards where I caught up with one or two ex colleagues I hadn’t seen in nearly 40 years! On my way home I stopped off at a clothes store that sells reasonably priced cotton clothing and bought 3 pretty t-shirts and a pair of loose slacks just in case the threat of more heat next week comes true.
Tomorrow morning I’m going to visit Linda’s new garden where we plan to enjoy coffee and cake while she tells me her plans. There is apparently a very nice view over a wall and she can watch the trains in and out of the nearby station so hopefully won’t miss the Allotment community too much.
Anne, your home was built the same year a lady I’ve known most of my life was born. I’ve found a cheerful happy 100th birthday card to send to her next week. She has remained in the same house and still manages with visits from carers during the day just like your home gets TLC from Mark!
I’m now going to settle down to watch England ladies football team play Sweden. It should be fun.

Happy Tuesday! I swear I don't have enough hours in a day anymore. I had therapy today and will be leaving to sit in a little while. I am missing beautiful days at the pool but therapy is really helping my back so I will continue until they say stop.
Our new couches are coming Friday and hopefully my son can bring my old couches outside tomorrow for garbage pickup on Friday. I have permission from the association to leave them out early as Rob can't do it Thursday night because it is Robby's birthday and he and Lisa are taking him to Six Flags Great America, a big amusement park with several locations in America. Ours is about an hour away so not too bad of a ride.
I bought a couple of yard signs for his birthday to put up tomorrow night after sitting so he can be surprised on his birthday Thursday.
I took Babe off my cell phone account because they were charging $50 a month for his phone and he only uses it for calls. I went to Cellular and they will only be charging $15 a month. It wasn't easy getting T Mobile to straighten this out but I happened to talk to an intelligent young man twice and he got it all set for me to transfer Babe's same number.
I really have to get moving and get organized. I am ordering Mc Donald's for the kiddos and will pick it up on my way. Have a good evening.

We are now getting the heat. It does get miserable in the late afternoon. We have fans and our little portable room a/c. It helps…barely! As I have mentioned many times, we need to get drapery that will help block heat and sun. That should help in winter by holding in the heat. First I need to find the drapes, rods and the find help installing everything. This could take a full year!
John has requested fish burritos for dinner. Yikes! That will require turning on the stove. I will ignore that request. The cook doesn’t cook on very hot days! I will chop and serve another salad.
The heat simply shuts me down. I can’t do much. Sadly I am not as adaptive as I would like to be. I tried to exercise….half way through and I was huffing and puffing.
Anne: my situation is that I can’t see any neighbor. There are people who live a few acres away from us but we can’t see them. The dairy herd is across a paved county road. Right next to our property is a heavily wooded area owned by a timber company. The old growth forest at the back of us is our own forest. See what I mean…i have no idea about neighborhood activities.
Sandy: I hate running around and will do whatever I can to avoid it. John is the guy that needs to get out and see what’s what every day. He will hear some activity in our neighborhood and will simply walk or drive over and check it out. Nosy? Oh my! Never!
Jackie: I have been forced to attend many Catholic funeral masses. They provide that closure that is part of our culture. I have attended those celebrations of life also. It seems to serve the same purpose. I think the important thing is some sort of solace for the family. It is important also to be able to connect with friends like you at times like that.
Time to have a glass of ice water

Hello, a bit warmer today even though we had quite a few hours of cloudy weather. Today was laundry day here. Everything in the laundry pile has been washed, dried and put away. I did get the lettuce seeds planted in a separate container. I do doubt any that I planted where the critters dig around will germinate but we will see.
The paper I ordered arrived today but it isn’t the paper I wanted. Darn! I will get back to mulling over the Thanksgiving cards next week. Meanwhile, back to the Christmas cards. I put 7 more together today. I am getting there. 😄
Sandy, you do have very, very busy days. I hope the phone switch for Babe works out well. Sometimes any change can be difficult. Hi to the kids!
Anne, I do hope you grab a delivery spot given you have a holiday on the way. How were the beets today? I live on a corner lot and keep all of my blinds closed. No neighbors peek into my house and I don’t watch them. 🙂
Jackie, I am glad you made it to the church on time today. Cities change a lot when you don’t drive to them on a schedule, like for work. Glad all worked out. Have a good time with Linda tomorrow I hope she is in a happy mood.
Patsy, how are you getting along in the heat? Our temperatures will be a bit higher each day until we’ll be back to stewing on a slow boil by early August. Ahhhhhh.
Barbie, I hope you have zucchini soon. I planted a bush variety and have my fingers crossed that I will have some zucchini before frost!
Well, additional pests have arrived. The Cicada killer wasps have returned and are whacking into my patio door often. I could have lived without those. Actually, there are many varieties of wasps this summer and all seem to visit my deck. Also mosquitoes are biting now. I had avoided them earlier. Staying indoors is pretty nice. 😁👍🏻👍🏻😁
Take care everyone.

Oh girls, we wait for summer all winter long and when it finally arrives we dream of a nice squishy snow ball on the back of our necks. Never mind, it will soon be lovely fall with all the glorious colours.
Its not so long ago that I seemed to be attending Catholic funerals all the time. Mary Jo had a lot of Portuguese relatives so the masses were held in the Portuguese Catholic Church. Only her generation left now I'm afraid and although the service was long and not understood by me and Mark at least there was a glorious meal always provided at the end.
Heat is slowly building up again. You are not alone PATSY.

I don't go to funerals or memorials. I prefer to remember those who have departed in my own way. Jake and have specified no funeral or memorial for us when we go.
We live in a 55+ manufactured home community with lots of rules, thus there are no junker cars on anybody's lawn or garbage cans at the curb, or crazy paint jobs, or noisy vehicles, or any of the annoying things that happen in many neighborhoods. When I walk in the morning, I walk past every house in the neighborhood and see how their flowers are growing or the progress on a paint or roofing job. There is always something interesting. My walking friend and I comment on everything to each other but never to anyone else. We can identify all 200+ houses by some description of the owner, the landscaping, the pets, or the vehicles. Every walk is has something interesting to see.
My zucchini plant got its first flower today. I expect zucchini to eat through most of August. The tomatoes are still tiny and green.
Jake was off to cardiac rehab and the chiropractor this morning so I had a nice block of time to myself. Then he took a nap with the pets after lunch so I had more time to ride my bike and watch my TV programs that I watch by myself.
I walked extra long this morning to get my 10,000 steps because I knew there would be no evening walk since it has been so hot. Jake said it felt like walking into a pizza oven.

🇨🇦 Anne: what a day that must have been! Leaving your beloved England and coming to the wild and bitter cold Canada. You survived and thrived! Where ever you nest, I am so happy to know you. I sincerely hope the next 49 yrs in Canada will bring as much joy and adventure.

Happy Wednesday! I took Babe to currency exchange to meet his DIL to do something with a title.
Then I came home and changed my delivery of furniture to next Friday because Rob can bring a friend and get the old furniture to the street next Thursday. It didn't work out for this week as they are playing volleyball tonight and he would have been too rushed and didn't have a friend to help this week.
I was going to go to pool but it says rain is coming so I think I will just stay in until I go sit later. Will do my home therapy and maybe ride the bike before dinner. I bought a little birthday kit for the front yard for Robby's birthday, you just stick them in the ground. He will be with mom and dad all day so I just wanted him to see the little display and take a birthday picture that Lisa can post. I will try to put them up tonight when I leave so Robby doesn't see them until morning.
Anne, I haven't stayed in one place more than 20 years even my childhood home so good for you. I don't wait for cold weather at all, I could have summer all year long except for clothes, I like the change of seasons for clothes but that's about it.
Barbie, you are the most disciplined person I know with your exercise routine. I get so busy and/or just lazy on some days I skip exercise. That could be why I don't get down to my goal weight very often. lol
Lin, you must really enjoy making those cards, it seems like a full time job to me. They are appreciated I know when my daughter sends me a card made by her it is extra special. I think I have the phone situation straightened out but have to wait for the sims card from new company to be sure.
Patsy, as much as I complain I do think keeping busy is what is keeping me healthy. I do enjoy staying home and doing nothing occasionally but did get a lot of that during the pandemic. Not sure I could live without central air although as a kid we didn't have any A/C. They have those neck coolers that work well, you should check them out on Amazon. I bought one for Bryanna because her A/C in car is broken.
Jackie, sorry about your friend who passed. It was nice of you to go to service and see old friends. I do not want a wake and want to be cremated but I do want a Mass for family and friends to send me off.
They will get a nice luncheon after the service and will not have to go to cemetery. My kids can bring my ashes to the cemetery and put my ashes in the niche I have already purchased.
Started to rain so no pool, now I wait and see if volley ball is still being played. It might not have rained there so I will be prepared to go. Have a great evening.
Sandy

Thanks girls for the congratulations. I never expected! so a lovely surprise.!!!!!!!!!🇨🇦!!!!!!!!!
Actually I livd with my parents until I married in the same house I was born in but after marriage moved around an awful lot! Then at the grand old age of 50 odd I moved into this old house and I've been here ever since.
Seeing we are talking funerals I've told the boys to take me to a taxidermist and have me stuffed so I can keep an eye on them. I'd make a useful door stop as well.
Its been a wonderfully quiet three days here so far with no one in the house next door, just the old car and flat bed in the drive. Not a sniff of a human. Jilly has barely barked because she doesn't have to defend me against arriving humans, cars, motor bikes and dogs. Utter peace.
I'm enjoying whilst I can because who knows who will arrive on August 1st.
Teatime and it looks a bit like rain on the way. Crossing fingers.
Anne - I am a lumberjack and I'm alright!0 -
Ummm Anne, if you moved into the house when you were 50 and you are in the house 49 years, that makes you 94 which I know you are not. Something is not calculating.0

A busy day for me. First I went to the supermarket to stock up on fruit and was chuffed that I don’t need to buy salad or veggies at the moment because I’m growing so much. I walked George and Betty on the moor then went to Linda’s for coffee before we went to look at her new garden. It’s a beautiful spot looking over open countryside and she has lots of plans for her fruit trees and a couple of raised beds so I’m sure it will be a happy place for her. One of her neighbours has been leaving more bags of wood off cuts outside her garage for my log burner so I loaded them in my car and brought them home. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve now got because some are in my garage and others in the log store but certainly enough to keep me warm and energy bills down when we get into winter. My last chore was to cut the grass so I can now concentrate on my flower beds.
I agree Patsy, it’s important to have closure when someone passes and whatever one believes, a chance to celebrate a life or pray for the departed is very important. Hopefully my friend can do just that. When it’s my turn, I hope a simple gathering and a friend prepared to toss my ashes on my favourite moors will do me!
It’s my bedtime and I must load the washing machine to run overnight and address the card to be sent to the 100 year old lady.
Jackie 🥰0 -
Good evening. Hotter here today, temps in the high 80’s. And muggy—like summer. 😁 I watered my plants this morning and did my (tiny) daily vegetable harvest. I had some follow-ups to do with orders and something new, bank balances to double check and paid bills again. I couldn’t find my login credentials for that change in credit card account from earlier this year so things went kind of slow. I was going to tune in to a Zoom call with REI but didn’t get things cleared up in time so missed most of the call and they don’t record it. Not a big deal.
Also got the sentiment stamped inside all of the Christmas cards. I may make some secular cards with a candy cane design. We’ll see, feels good to have those mostly wrapped up. Back to Thanksgiving next and onward to August birthday cards.
So Anne, after you married and moved to Canada 40 years ago, how many houses did you live in before moving to your current home? We lived at 4 different farms after we got married and then I moved to the big city to work and have only lived in 2 places since then. As a child I lived with my parents in 2 different places, one in town, one in the country. Not lots of moving I guess.
Jackie, wow, fuel stocked up for winter. Yippee! I am glad Linda’s garden spot is lovely and that she seems to be happy with it.
Sandy, so another week before you get your furniture. Sounds like that will work out better. Yes, I spend loads of time on making cards. I am slow and meticulous and mull over each decision. A friend of mine used to make cards for her grandchildren years ago and if she spent more than 10 minutes on each card something was odd. She was FAST!
I am getting behind in my reading. I picked up 5 books the other day and I am in the middle of another one I got earlier. My second most time consuming hobby. 😁
Patsy, I understand the heat causing fatigue. Me too! Today as it heated up the air conditioning didn’t run much and it got stuffy in here. At that point, I was less than motivated to do a lot. We have hotter temperatures forecast for each day through the weekend. And we missed the rain the last two times that was in the forecast. I will be increasing my water bill.
Barbie, my tiny zucchini plants are looking happy. I hope that continues and also that they will grow like weeds. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Well, back to reading my book. It is at an it resting point in the plot.
Take care everyone.
Lin 🙋🏼♀️

I generally read two books at the same time. One book is the one I read in the bathroom and in bed for awhile before I go to sleep. The other is on the Kindle app on my phone so I can read in the middle of the night after I take Bessie out or sometimes while riding my exercise bike. I listen to podcasts or sometimes an audio book on my phone while I walk or work in the yard. I get books, e books and audiobooks from the library

Good morning. 🌻🌺🌤🍅🥒🌶👩🏻🌾
This morning I was ready to walk George and Betty at 8am but clouds rolled over, defying the forecast for a dry, sunny day and rained on us. Actually, I didn’t mind too much because, being tired after cutting my grass last night, I didn’t water the peas and beans so I was saved that job. Quiet on the moors with no sign of my dog walking friends but we had an enjoyable trek while George raced about doing zoomies and Betty hid behind my feet! On the way home I detoured into town to buy dog and cat treats together with George’s lamb and chicken frozen blocks and by the time I left there the sun was out and the temperature was up nearly 10C. One has been defrosted ready to be cut up for George’s lunch. Just to be different, Betty eats her kibble morning and evening.
So many jobs jumping out at me to do in the garden I think I’d better write a list of priorities and try to stick to it!
Anne, I’m counting on my fingers and becoming confused but am sure all will become clear. I travelled to Canada 53 years ago when I was 20, I think! It was such a long time ago!! 🤪. Enjoy the peace and quiet and hopefully new neighbours will be pleasant and quiet!
That’s a pretty teapot Lin whereas the previous day’s with fingers gave me the creeps because it reminded me of an afternoon spent in the cinema with my gran when I was about 4 years old, watching an old black and white B movie in which someone’s hand was cut off at the wrist and it proceeded to stalk people and strangle them! What was she thinking taking me to see that? 😧
Coffee finished so time to work! Happy Thursday everyone.

Me again. I see the price of KitKats is going up again so that’s a good reason for me to not be tempted! 😊

Hi SANDY you misread. I've been in CANADA 49 years and in this house 36 years which makes me still a "young thing" lol. I moved into THIS house at 50. So I came to Canada at the grand old age of 37 and as a family moved into 4 places with the husband of the day and then had 6 more moves before settling down LIN in the right town and province. Then you have to add on all the moves I had in the old country. Yorkshire and Derbyshire. The funny thing is I am a homebody without a trace of wanderlust. Just circumstances and work places.
If any one is interested:
1. Arrival and temporary housing.
2. Then a most unsuitable apartment among French speakers. Placed by French speaking HR people.
3. On to an apartment in a mainly speaking English town in Quebec.
4. 2 years later we buy a bungalow.
5. But the boys and I can't bear living in the place after C moved out to be with girlfriend.
6. A friend offers us a lovely home to rent.
7. Transferred to Ontario by work and into an apartment.
8. We find a townhouse to rent, but a little afraid there as some neighbours have dubious record with the law.
9. Move quickly into an apartment in present town.
10.Move into present house when Mark marries.
And I've been here ever since. Hope the above adds up. The sequence is correct. A very traumatic time in my life! And explains why I yearned so much for the safety of the old country and my pretty house and friends in Derbyshire.

Crikey Anne, that sounds like a GCE A level maths test! 😂🤣
A conversation at the service on Tuesday I had with an ex colleague from 40 years ago went along the lines of looking back, situations were often dire but in truth they were a part of a rocky road to happiness or at least contentment. I try not to look back and often not look forward, just live in the moment as I think you do too Anne.
Jackie 🥰0 -
Yes I do try to live in the moment JACKIE. I'm very content here, and if I get a little homesick there's always a peek back at the Britain I knew with British programs. I've just watched Unforgotten which was on Public Television at lunchtime for three days in a row.
Isn't it funny though how you set off on a life journey and all your plans unravel and you end up doing the very last things you ever thought you'd do! The good thing though for me I was sort of young and naive for my age at 37. I've gained such a lot in knowledge and experience and quite a few mistakes along the way to tranquil old age! So I really can't complain.

Morning all! A hot muggy day here already. The worst thing is that John fell when he was taking a bathroom break early this morning. Bruised elbow and knee but other than that, I think all is well. He went back to bed because he was sleepy and very groggy. Scared me to death.
As far as our adventures, we went to college right after we got married. Then after John got his masters degree he got a teaching position at a small college in the ski area of Colorado. more college for both of us. John got his doctorate and I got my masters degrees. I taught art at the same school part time and part time at a PR firm in Aspen. We built an amazing mountain cabin-lodge near Aspen. Then we moved to anchorage, Alaska. John was dean at a very large college, I worked for the mayor and then governor of Alaska. One rental house there until we bought a house. Then we moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming. One house rental until we bought a house. Next was our move to Astoria, Oregon. We bought a house and we have been here almost 30 (?) years. I can’t remember dates but I remember people and places and wonderful experiences. Lots of long hours and hard work but I think, all in all, we loved every minute of it. We
seem to gravitate to country living. We live in the middle of a forest here.
Need coffee or a nap. Hot muggy night and did not sleep well. But a shower and a bowl of cereal with sliced strawberries and all is right with the world. I will do exercises sometime this morning before the weather melts me into a puddle. Stay cool my friends.

Hello. I was on the phone for one of my extended conversations this morning. A friend who hasn’t called for several weeks called today. We are caught up now but very little was accomplished!
Sandy, take care today and hope the meeting goes well.
Anne, aha, you did move quite a bit (especially in comparison to me😄). I certainly never expected the events of my life but then I didn’t have a very detailed plan. Still do not!
Jackie, contentment is a good place to live in my opinion. As opposed to stress, striving and unhappiness in not getting what you want. The handy teapot reminded me of the TV show ‘The Adams Family’ which made me smile. One character was a hand that ran around named ‘Thing.’ I haven’t seen many horror films, thankfully. I scare easily.
Patsy, I am very sorry to hear of John’s fall. I hope he is not hurting more now. And I hope you have both a cup of coffee and a nap. Take care…..
Barbie, I do the same thing, I read more than one book at a time unless I need to hurry to finish one to return it to the library. 😄 I love the library!
I saw a lovely photo today. Anyone ever shop there?
‘ The iconic entrance to @libertylondon ‘
Wishing everyone well.

That is totally my kind of teapot! Oh I love it! Makes me want to drink more tea.
John is a bit stiff and sore and cranky. He resists aspirin or any painkillers. However I think he is rethinking that idea. He can move everything and no excruciating pain. I don’t think he has any broken bones or twisted muscles. But I will try ice pack and an aspirin.
