Guess who hit a milestone today ? Yep, it's ME !!! Down 50 from September. Started out doing carb cycling, to LCHF, to very low carb-Keto ( most days anyways ) ...still not fat adapted but working on it. Ideally, I have another 40-50 to go, but I've decided to not get too hung up on an actual number on the scale, but rather go by pant sizes....so next goal is to be down two sizes by June 1, and then another two sizes by Oct 1.
WAHOOOOO!
Congrats!0 -

Throwing caution to the wind over the holidays is what lead me to this suffering loop from Hades, @4031isaiah! You might have more flexibility, but if you're metabolically challenged at all, I SOOOO do not recommend this. Maybe an off plan item per day or a bite of a local must try food, because after all, it is vacation, but going full tilt willy nilly is bound to be regretted at some point upon returning home... HUGS
I do not do IF. I've read about it a bit here but have never really looked into it seriously. Maybe I should...0 -

I wish I could do IF regularly. I'm am a witch with a capital B when I IF. I did a monthly challenge once, doing a 16:8. Hooo-boy. My family was happy when I quit. I tried both zero-cal fast and fat-fast (with only BPC calories). Just call me Oscar, and I'll go live in a trash can!
That said, IFing is the only way I lose weight anymore. Bleh. So eventually I'll have to do another stint. 3 days a week: BPC and keto-ade or broth only until 3pm. And only 1000 cal for the day. Maintenance cals the other days. By the end of the week...I turn green and am slamming the trash can lid at people, but I lose weight.
A lot of people like it, and it works into their natural hunger rhythms nicely though.0 -

I only do IF as it occurs naturally. I don't force extend it unless there's no food around. If I get really hungry while IF, then I eat. But that's usually around the 7-8 hour mark is when I get the first blip. I have been lazy today about not having breakfast yet. I ate dinner around ... 8 pm last night, it's now 10:30 am local time, and I'm hungry but can't decide what to eat. If my stomach keeps growling, I'll eat something, but I just don't FEEL it....
Torn between salty pepperoni and a Keto Cocoa, barely sweetened enough to take the edge off the cocoa and cayenne....
My biggest issue, and I can't remember if I mentioned it above, is that after I pass the 10-12 hour mark (can go longer if part of my IF was sleeping), I tend to have so much build-up of bile that I start having ... bathroom drama, shall we say. In a painful way. I have no gallbladder, so my body slowly pours in bile constantly whether I've eaten or not. I imagine it might adjust over time if I did this EVERY SINGLE DAY for weeks on end, but I cannot see that working for me. Plus there is not enough bootie salve to keep me sane for that.
I've recently been debating trying bile salts again. They didn't work before, but I have been wondering if taking them while fasting would delay, weaken, or stop this reaction. I would LOVE to be able to extend my fasts when I'm rocking and rolling with it, which isn't often.0 -
Hey all! Been sick since last Thursday with some kind of stomach bug. Hardly ate at all for a couple days and I still get discomfort when I eat something. Dropped 5 pounds and I'm waiting to see how quickly that comes back. This bug is running rampant thru our region at the moment.0

We've seen a lot of that stomach bug around here too. Thankfully, *fingers crossed* I have escaped it. Feel better.0

RAWR! Fierce is so much more fun. It really is. And when you get into the fierce-diva groove, it's very empowering. And refreshing. Feeling like you are on top, not the bottom and getting stepped on by life.

@elize7 This is me, too. The restrictive nature of this dietary plan and the changes it brings are actually a comfort in times of stress. Rather than relaxing and riding the waves, I tend to tighten down the hatches and buckle down to strict adherence. It then becomes my calm in the storms of life!0 -
My apologies up front for the whining rant. I am so frustrated and concerned about my weight right now. I have gained a very real 10+ pounds over the past year. My diet is spot on 90 % of the time, I exercise some, not a lot, I don't know what else I can do. I just decided to increase my calories a tiny bit and get a little more protein and less fat. I know they say "moderate" protein, I was trying to eat around 60 gms daily. I've tried egg fast, fat fast, water fast, you name it, it doesn't budge. Every time I get on that motherf****r, the number goes up. And it's not just scale weight, I see it and feel it in my clothes, I'm sure my measurements have gone up.
ARGHG. Any suggestions are more than welcome. My diary is open.0 -

Any of these changes you made, did you isolate them (make only one change at a time) and follow each plan for at least 4 weeks? Our scales show what happened 2 weeks ago, aside from water related stuff... If you didn't give 4 weeks to any change, changing too many things, your body never had a chance to catch up.
Personally, @ChoiceNotChance, I'm in a lot of the same boat. I've had to drop some things that were healthy, but not strict keto compliant, and I'm still fighting to get back to ground zero. I also gained, almost 20 pounds over my best from last year, and in that hellish frustration loop. For me, the biggest thing that jumps out at me is "my diet is spot on 90% of the time."
Consistency is key with Ketogenic diets. I'll pop over and look at your diary and see if anything else jumps out oat me.0 -
@ChoiceNotChance The only things I see that are potential red flags are the MCT Oil - someone pointed out here that using MCT *can* sometimes slow your body's burning of your own body fat in favor of a quick energy source there. I don't recall if this was backed up with documentation.
Another thing is dairy. Dairy can be a trigger for some folks - remember, it's original function was to grow calves into full sized cows/bulls...
Also, if you haven't considered it, make sure you're getting enough sodium - not enough makes me retain water. Your water looks okay. How are your sleep patterns? Your stress levels? Hormonal considerations?
Also, have you lost significant and not focused on maintaining? There are some theories saying that for every 10% of body weight we lose, we need to give our body 3-6 months of maintenance before going on so as not to exhaust our metabolisms with too much deficit.
Are you eating enough for your height/weight?
Another option is to do a carnivore diet - only meat and animal products for a month, then slowly add things back in, one food a week, to see where your issues might be...0 -
Thanks for the input @KnitOrMiss. I don't do the MCT oil with a lot of regularity. I lost about 60 lbs 3 yrs ago, but nothing since, and over the past year, it has crept up. If I make changes, I do them for a while to see if it makes a difference. I've been doing IF for a couple of months now with no results. As for not eating enough, I am small, only 5'1" 145# lbs (now). I had been 133-135 last year and I am 56 so I'm sure there is some hormonal play there as well. That's why I just increased my calories a little to try and change things up a bit.
I do eat cheese, not excessively, and some HWC, but again, not a lot. I just remembered I do like my little yogurt/sour cream mix up but, again, it's not something I do with regularity, that it would cause me to gain 10 lbs.
I will think about going carnivore for a bit and see what happens, although, I am reluctant to give up the little dairy that I do have.0 -

When you drop the veggies, small amounts of animal products, including dairy in the context mentioned would still be acceptable to try...sometimes it's so odd that the carbs in veggies are enough to throw people off. @Karlottap, @FIT_Goat, and @Dragonwolf are three who come to mind that have had massive successes doing just meat/eggs...long term. If you're not part of the related group, Low Carbers Daily, that covers all low carb type eating plans, it might be worth a gander. There is also a tangential over 50's group related, too.

In truth, dairy will still stall me and cause slight gain (if I have more then trivial amounts). I just really like it, so I include it knowing the cost.0

Good morning! I'm new to this group and new to the Keto WOE. Working hard to make this the new normal.
Ive been on Keto for 8 days now successfully. I'm feeling quite hopeful about making this a way of life.
A little about me: I'm 49, live in TX and have been overweight/obese for most of my life. My starting weight last week was 256. I'm 5'2". So that's pretty high for my height.
I have a very strong addiction to sugar. I went sugar free (99% - see next paragraph) a year or so ago and was faithful for about 3 months. Don't know what happened but somehow I went off the rails and was in the grips of addiction once again. In that time I gained another 20 pounds.
During every attempt to reduce my weight FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS, there was one thing I would NOT give up: my Coffemate flavored creamers with sugar. I'd always rationalize that this was just a small thing, and I could work it into a healthy diet and lose weight. For 30 years. 30!!
Anyhow, today I gave it up. I made delicious bulletproof coffee that I LOVED this morning. I can do this.
I look forward to getting to know you all and participating in the forums.
Oh, one quick question: pros and cons of counting calories? Who does, who doesn't and why? I'm currently striving for 1500 but usually end up around 1590-1800 every day.
Cheers!!

Welcome @carsonheim ! My DH and I still laugh (after 2 months on keto) about our new normal WOE. We've found that our bodies really wanted to eat this way all along! You'll find that some of us count calories and some don't. I try for 20 or less carbs a day and I find that I struggle to get to 1500 calories in a day. So I don't count calories at all anymore- just carbs. One less thing to worry about!0

@4031isaiah Honestly, I've spent a good deal of time in my head digging through all the crap to get to this most authentic me. Don't be afraid to put the dietary stuff in maintenance mode and spend some real time figuring you out. That's part of my weight stall last year, but I'm TOTALLY GOOD WITH IT, because my mind is so much more ... settled these days.
I find comfort in the convenience of eating this way... And when things get tight, battening down the hatches to drop even further in carbs makes it easier. My ex just messed me about to the tune of $3000+ that I desperately needed, and usually that would have had me face planting into a pile of whatever carby indulgence. However, I realized that in do that, I was letting him STILL CONTROL and manipulate me... RED LIGHT went off in my head. That *kitten* does not deserve ANY PART OF ME.... So it was really easy to eat on plan and just find other ways to vent at that point.
If you do not have a good friend to whom you can vent, and him /her to you, figure this out now... It is worth it's weight in gold!!!!0 -

If you can get to a point of not binging like me, stifling the boredom and stress eating like I'm prone to, and can get to a point of only eating when you're truly hungry, you can do what you like.
Personally, I set my deficit at the lowest interval, and I eat to my hunger. I loosely track my calories, but as long as my carbs are on point, I feel aces...
As you adapt (first 6-12 weeks), I generally recommend not restricting calories. There are a lot of things you burn extra to convert and such... Eat to hunger, just on plan... I'm so happy that you've been able to give up your 30 year addiction. That's amazing...
Also, use a calculator like this: http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ to make sure that 1500 is really where you need to be... Calories, consumed and burned, are not an exact science, so ... use your judgment, and really stop and listen to your body...0 -

This is my biggest struggle -- binge eating and only eating to my hunger. I've looked at food and eating as an enjoyable recreational activity. Yummy goodness. Once the yummy goes in my mouth, it's difficult to stop. I have found that the Keto meals are very satiating and so there's less of a pull to keep eating. But it's something I deal with every single day.0 -

The tighter I keep my carbs down and my sugars almost non-existent, it really does get easier. I have to skip the fat bombs for the most part - and only use sweetener (Sweet Leaf Stevia) to TOLERANCE, not to taste. I still have issues with bacon and pepperoni sometimes, but even that is easier to manage when keeping the carbs DOWN... It's taken me a good bit of time to work my way here, and I went on an off the rails sugar bender over the holidays...
Remember, you're human, life happens, and make the next bite on plan. Banish guilt - it's worse than any carb or calorie, EVER!0 -

Thanks for the welcome. My husband is also a keto supporter in theory. I cook and stock keto-friendly foods at our home. At work, he ends up eating lots of carbs. My worry about that is that he's eating a high-carb, high-fat diet, which is not healthy. I look forward to being a good influence on him.0 -
@carsonheim- you definitely don't want to do high carb, high fat (your husband), that's what really runs up the risk for cardiac disease. One or the other, but, LCHF is MUCH more fun! Welcome!!0
