Thanks for the commiserations ladies - but i'm well on the mend and trying to focus on big picture; in the end its just a royal pain in the.. well shoulders lol.. and I admit I had a pity party for myself with a bag of chips... like you suzie I don't reach for the endorphin high of exercise nope I tie on the potato chip feedbag :( unlike you I wasn't brave enuf to log and slipped off the wagon completely with any logging for a few days..

on a giggle note.. I was like a beached whale in bed the first morning it hit; horrible pain in the arm moving any part of my body and I couldn't use either arm to bear weight to push myself up and out of bed.. so I was flopping around trying to scootch myself along to the edge to put my legs over.. I have one of the memory foam type beds tho where you kind of sink... so my arms were like little flippers -and I couldn't roll onto either shoulder (and I did learn I cannot do a sit up apparently as I couldn't get from laying to sitting without using my arms ha!) thank god I didn't have to go to the bathroom or it would have been even uglier.. and yes you're welcome for giving you my beached whale visual all day now!! :p But I started physio yesterday and have taken a few days off work til i'm 100% with my mobility.

And the upside I guess.. is something the PT said to me that really hit me .... at one point we were discussing being at work and the desk setup etc..and posture etc.. I said well hopefully i''ll be able to retire soon and it wont matter.. and she looked at me and said ... yes but do you want to retire broken? or well? really made me think later in the day..

so the upside is i'm back on track, and my BG has been testing high so i'm re reading some old material and refreshing everything as to why I came here and what I want blah blah.. and what I DON'T want.. so it's back at it and moving forward. And knowing I didn't give up even though I may have faltered here and there or detoured, is helping too.. plus having you guys of course !! so its a new day and i'm in it for the win!!

Milove - im sorry to hear about the stress issues.. they suck. and as women we tend to put more stress on ourselves than anything else.. I read something a while back about living morei n the moment and not worrying so much about everything going on in your life.. I remember thinking at the time ya right snort... but it was quite good actually and kinda made ya realize stressing over stuff you cant change or what might be or is... really does a number on us.. if I can find it again ill post it for ya just in case it might help!

Vail - I saw your post where you said your clothes were feeling looser even tho the numbers weren't moving.. I believe clothes are the best indicator over anything else, so that's a win in my book for sure - congrats!!

Suzy - I can relate to your thing with struggling when yur routine is off.. im kinda the same and if i'm out socially for some reason I think I have to eat everything and anything cause I've already blown it as such... I know its the wrong mentality and that by now we should realize it's just a day and normal healthy people have a day and don't give it another thought, they just have what they want and don't have what they don't want and the next day go right back to their own normal.... that's my goal to eventually get there!!!

and you went to the gym. AWESOME YOU1 sorry about the ouchies tho!

As far as worrying about the tracking for the group, I betcha you'll be one of the few who are being completely honest so I say kudos to you girl.. and remember its a fairly length time frame you have committed to so the best thing is your food journal will show better and better as you go.. which is the whole idea right?? so don't sweat it or feel you have to justify it to anyone .. life happens and it is what it is and a few days off here and there doesn't affect your goal with this program... remember you made it through that 30 day clean eating thing so as far as i'm concerned you can do anything!!! lol

ok cant sit at the puter hunched over - my PT will know I did next week ha... but wanted to catch up and post in the forum instead of the stupid phone !! hang in everyone - we DO rock !

Thanks, Snoozie! Just to clarify about the scales - I have been losing scale weight, but I have very fancy, expensive scales that not only measure body fat % but give you a number for visceral fat level. I had hoped that inches lost off my waist on the outside would mean that I'd lost fat round my organs on the inside! But although I've lost weight, the visceral fat level is the same. Still in a normal range though, so perhaps that's actually fine for me and won't change with dieting - I have to admit that despite loads and loads of reading on obesity, I still don't quite understand it. Presumably we're supposed to have some visceral fat, and I don't really know how much I need to keep working on losing it.

Your beached whale experience actually sounds more scary than amusing ... although the idea of trying to do a sit up without using your arms, on a squidgy bed - maybe they should use that for training athletes as it sounds impossible to me! I do like your PT's point about retiring.

I have found that fasting helps with those non-routine days - I don't want to sound evangelical about it, because I very much know that it isn't for everybody, and it remains to be seen whether it's a long-term answer for me - but I do feel I can relax a bit. If I haven't eaten for a couple of days then I know that a big meal isn't going to wipe out the calories I "saved", so it's making it easier for me to fit in social events and so on. Funnily enough I'm helping my son move today too! I haven't decided yet how to deal with it, eating wise. I also wanted to say that I'm not showing any great commitment with the fasting - my hunger seems to come in waves and actually goes down over time, so I'm actually less hungry if I don't eat at all, than if I try to eat lower calories. I know it doesn't make sense, but it seems to be the easier option for me at the moment, and I'm all for making things easy! However, my son being back home will be the big test. Even if I don't cook for him, he'll be cooking and eating right next to me!

Vail - I totally get what you mean about the visceral fat; somewhere along the line someone told me that the fat around the organs is the most dangerous of all for us... and belly fat appears to be the biggest indicator in women that we have it, as opposed to equal fat all over (if that makes sense?) I didn't know there was an actual scale that could measure that - i'd guess it was mega expensive lol!! they had some kind of weird scale at one of the places I was at but I think it just did overall body fat #... and the guy said the caliper test was still the most effective for the overall I think? I do remember I was in the obese range when I was at my heaviest.. and that I did make it to the upper edge of the "normal" after my 65ish lbs lost.. but with having regained 25 I don't know where i'd hit now..

but since I will be ditching the excess weight now.. i'll wait to see!

im so glad the fasting is working for you with your own tweaks added.. and I imagine its going to be a challenge having your son home so we have your back remember!!

Suzy hope the trip goes ok both with the move and the food!!

Gail - speaking of sons moving in how is everything going with your new roomies????

Susan - not sure if you're still at the family visit or not... hope all is well in your corner of the world.

I'm off to walk at the lake this morning; had a bad night sleep wise must have travelled a lot as the covers were all twisted and on the floor !! maybe that counts as exercise?? im a little stiff all over but more like the day after a gym visit than the shoulder(s) themselves so imagine that's from the physio ..

oh right its MOTHERS day today so wishing all the moms a lovely day !!

I just read an interesting article on a study on lowering bad cholesterol levels..

it said studies have shown that eating just one apple a day can reduce your bad cholesterol by up to 15%, and that a small handful of walnuts can also reduce the bad stuff by about the same...

I realize the apple and nut people may have conspired to fund the study (altho it also said strawberries as well so maybe they were in on it too) LOL.. but... I much prefer all 3 of those items to the god awful bran I have such a hard time getting into me... so I think I will be adding one of those things a day as often as possible; it'll be too late for my next cholesterol test on Tuesday but worth a shot!

Oh, what happened there? My post has reposted itself! There doesn't seem to be any way to delete it! How odd! I apologise - please don't bother to read the post above again!

Interesting about the walnuts- I eat walnuts almost daily. (Although I like your comment about the apple and walnut people conspiring - it wouldn't surprise me!). I'm on a statin so my cholesterol is low anyway, but I've always thought of walnuts as good for you!

    Enjoy your walk, Snoozie :).

lol tht's happned to me before too Vail about the double posting.. I started it then realized what had happened!!

I'm on a statin too.. trying desperately to get off it hence the grab at walnuts and apples.. the dietician at the diabetes place had told me that bran buds had shown to lower it at well so I was giving that a go.. I got my overall cholesterol down to around 2.0 from 4 something when I came here... and 2 is considered normal i gather. but apparently my particular doc prefers people with Type 2 to be lower than the norm... i'd prefer to own a pony myself.. and prefer to be oprah rich.. but ya know... we don't always get what we "prefer" LOL.

i'm always a little sketchy about any study results where I can't find who funded the study.. hence my conspiracy theory haaaaaaa

it was a gorgeous morning at the lake ... I swear this is why we have winter so we can actually appreciate gorgeous weather lol

I updated my ticker and my profile to help me move forward from here.... suprisingly i'm down a tiny little bit from the last time I updated it tho, so that was a little bonus and good incentive right now..

    upwards and onwards Hatters!

Oh my, Suzanne....You have such a time with your limbs.....and still you keep such a positive attitude. You amaze me.. After having said all that...I do hope you are feeling better. Excellent on the 2.4 lb loss!! I am trying to remember from reading so that amount might be off ....

Oh the new roomies aren't here full time ,just on the weekends.....when school is out in a few weeks it will be full time...that's why I had to try and de clutter some things before they get here full time.... Still, I barely had a few bags of stuff to throw away...I just repacked it, so It is in tubs to be moved around at a later date....possibly when we are old and pass on , it will give Young son something to go through for closure....you know..."Now why in the HE## did she need to keep 101 different kinds of cook books when she hardly ever cook anything different!! and why are there 55 different craft projects started and put in these bags........oh yea she had ADD, never could finish anything she started"...... LOL

Today is my Birthday!! ......so tomorrow is my new day to start this off right. I have indulged for over 4 months ...it's time to pull those big girl pants on ...(and I do mean BIG girl pants at 20 + lbs over my ticker weight )......and get back to what has worked in the past for me...

My cholesterol is high, too, Snooze and my doctor is looking at adding Crestor to my diet....have you or anyone taken that? I can't do lipator it kills my muscles.

Snoozie sorry about your shoulder, wishing you a quick recovery.

Vail all congrats to you, cannot fast at this time in my life. Five days is a lot, well 24 hours is a lot. You have great will power.

Suzy, I am hanging in there, will be leaving in 2 weeks to visit my son in Jersey, that should help.

    Happy Mother's Day!!

    Happy Birthday, Time2Lose!

    l_8336_hedgehog-cake.jpg

No, I haven't had Crestor - I get confused by the names, because they are different here. I was on simvastatin, but it was changed to atorvastatin because of drug interactions, I think. I think atorvastatin and Lipitor are the same thing. I don't seem to have problems on it - or at least, I can't distinguish my normal aches and pains from statin-induced ones! Because I have heart disease I've been told I have to take the statin regardless of cholesterol levels (mine has never been high). I think I'm in the same situation as you, Snoozie, in that they "prefer" it to be lower with heart disease - I've been laughing so much at your comments about not getting what we prefer!

    Good morning Hatters!!

Party in the room to celebrate Gail's birthday - woo to the hoo!! Hope you have a wonderful day celebrating YOU, my friend!!

Yes I'm on a statin for cholesterol - like Vail I think the names are different here but its a generic brand of either crestor or Lipitor - its called rovostatin or something like that.. started at 10mgs then SHE (the doc) upped it to 20 a few months ago even tho I was down around 2... grrrr

That said.. just as a point of interest and maybe something to ask your own doc if they do put you on any statin???

My doc splained to me that some statins can cause muscle fatigue.. (like vail im not sure I could tell the difference between which ouch is from which)

HOWEVER.. she said because some statins can "attack" muscles (which causes the fatigue and pain and interesting you said u can't take Lipitor for that reason!)

but because of that and because your HEART is a muscle, she put me on a supplement called CoEnzymeQ10... it protects the heart apparently since it is a muscle too.. so i'm on 100mg 2x a day. one in the morning one at night..along with the statin.

its not covered by my insurance as it's not a drug and I discovered a huge price difference so I get it at Walmart or thru a friend at Costco now as it's about 1/2 the price as the drugstore. When my sister got put on a statin after her stroke I asked her doc flat out if she was going to put her on C0Q10.. she didn't seem too impressed with me asking but also didn't seem to KNOW about it... I do remember going to a natural health store looking for something and when they asked what drugs I was on and I told them about the statin and doc putting me on the Q10, the girl said wow.. you're doctor is quite progressive not many know to put you on that with a statin..

So might be something to just ask your doctor about if you do go on a statin Gail - not saying it's a must have at all, or that it might be right for everyone... just passing it on in case something u wanna ask about.

Milove - bet you're looking forward to the visit with your son!! I hope whatever is causing you the most stress right now either goes away, or you can find a way to get some time away from it mentally - with whatever brings you small joys; a stroll, window shopping, a good book - any moments you can snatch to get your head away from it cause as we know stress is so not good for us, especialy women. That said, I myself find it kinda frustrating that everyone says you gotta find a way to de stress but nobody tells you how.. so for me its the headspace doing something I love that gives me a wee bit of a break - hoping you can find yours to get you thru this period!

I've been off from work a few days with both shoulders messed up but heading back in today; my range of motion in both is good but I am heeding the words of the PT about bring "broken" or well.. and will be setting timers on my phone through the shifts to do my shoulder stretches and watch my "hunched over the keyboard" posture more often!

And I'm in a good place mentally with having reset everything including my mindset!! heading down to the lake shortly; I haven't been logging my walks but am doing them!! have a great week everyone

I have CoQ10 with Red Yeast Rice, but forget to take it... Should bring it out in view and get started for when he does put me on statins...Also need to get back to my K2 vitamin......helps with calcium getting wher it needs to go..

Well, here's to getting started on getting this excess weigth off ...again lol
    Have an awsome week everyone!

Happy Belated birthday Gail Glad you enjoyed your day.

Snoozie sorry you are still suffering from your shoulders. I am glad you have a good range of motion for both shoulders and a plan for doing your PT.

Vail, unfortunately, all meds have side effects, I am glad it is not too bad.

Thanks, Snoozie, I guess it's everything I work full time with high school at-risk youth. I am full time in grad school. It is online which helps. I won't overwhelm you with everything else. But thanks for the suggestions just reading them helps me to think about relaxing. I was enjoying the gymnastics but stopped because I was feeling tired and was having a little fluttering feeling in my heart. Hope to go back soon. Got to make an appointment to see my doctor.
    Everyone enjoy your day.

Good luck with your doctor's appointment, Milove. Your life does sound stressful and busy! I've been getting that fluttering too recently, funnily enough. My doctor said it might be normal for me (I sometimes have an irregular pulse), but I think it definitely needs to be checked out if you haven't been told it's OK. Anyway, I know the fluttering can be stressful in itself!

Thanks for CoQ10 discussion, ladies. I used to take it and I stopped, but I can't remember why. I will start again. I've just had the results from one of those genetic tests and have found I am genetically more at risk of myopathy from statins, which is a pain (possibly literally, ha ha!). In fact, one of the major things that came out of it seemed to be different reactions to certain drugs, which might explain why I've had problems in the past. Unfortunately some of these are drugs I need for my condition. It's interesting stuff and I'm glad I had it done, but not quite sure what to do with the information!

The funniest bit, though, was the results for how much of my excess weight is due to my genes. Yes, it turns out that I do have some genetic markers for obesity, but they only contribute five and a half pounds to my weight! Well, I'll tell you, I gained a lot more than five and half pounds, and it seems like it wasn't my genes' fault - lol!

Thanks Vail, I called my doctor yesterday and I had an appointment scheduled for June 28 so they moved it up to June 21st. He is very busy. However, last night I felt very short of breath and anxious. So I went to the ER and after running test everything came back negative but they wanted to keep me but I told them that I did not want to stay so they called my doctor and he said to call the office today and he will see me. I still came to work and will call later.

That is pretty cool Vail that you can figure out through genes how everything affects you. So it is true that everyone do not put on weight and lose weight the same even if you do the same thing?

I'm glad you're able to see the doctor soon, Milove. I know with stress going on, it could just be a type of panic attack, but having heart disease I'm really keen on having those things looked at just in case, especially in women. Sometimes our symptoms are different. I hope it goes well with your doctor.

Yes, the genes thing is funny! I kept thinking - five pounds and all the rest was me overeating! I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I think some genes make you predisposed to obesity, and then environment contributes too - I don't know if it means that the same things don't work for everybody. But I do feel that things do seem to work differently for different people. We have Slimming World in the UK, and I know people who do it and it's fantastic for them, but I've always hated it when I've done it!

Vail and Snoozie, thanks for the love. I still could not get an appointment earlier than the 21st of June. However, I know one thing that has worked for me in the past is verbalizing my feelings. So that is why I will be venting here. Thanks in advance lol.

im with gail on this one milove - you vent away as much as you like!!!!

I cannot believe he is making you wait over a month after ending up in emerg :( but as gail said.. right now you just gottta worry about you and let the rest of the world take care of itself.. I know that's hard especially when you work with high risk kids and everything else that may be going on in your personal life... but sometimes you just HAVE to stop, breathe and realize you can't solve all the problems in the world for everyone - some times you have to step back and let somebody else step up... and altho as women we often don't think anyone else can do it (or not as well as we could lol)... often times people surprise us when we force them into stepping up by simply us stepping back..

but no matter what, it's imperative you find a way to not be in major stress mode - it causes too much damage to women in particular and we are well behind men in learning how to manage it .. hugs and know as gail said we're here for you!!

I'm sorry you're going through this Milove and I hope that your stress level calms down. You just feel free to vent all you want! I think we all need that outlet sometimes. Did you tell your doctor's office to put you on the cancellation list in case someone cancels and you can take their appointment? Please take care of yourself and let the small stuff slide.

    Morning Hatters!

Not much to report for this week; I've been relatively good on choices and water but had a few short changeover shifts and a training gig so had a few bumps on the road.. on the plus side i got first aid certified on work's dime so figured its a win-win at this stage of the game; even if it's only for family and friends and not that I ever want to put my training to the test, but it would definitely make me more comfortable now if i'm ever in a position to have to help someone til EMS can arrive..

I am loving my volunteer gig so far.. I have this sort of mental plan in my head to prepare for retirement (cause I REALLY want to retire lol... technically I can go now with no penalty, but I'm not quite ready with my plans.. I decided before i go I want to make sure I don't end up sitting on my butt doing nothing so am working on increasing 3 areas now in preparation..... social, physical, and activity I enjoy. I used to volunteer a lot but haven't for quite a while, so when I decided to include that I also decided I couldn't handle anything depressing - yup that sounds a little selfish I know but since a lot of my previous involved seniors or sick kids or animals.. I thought I wanna do something fun to start, so I signed up as a volunteer at our Living Arts Centre; its 2 large theatres (1300/800 seats) and 7 art stuiods with resident artists from glass blowing to woodwork to ceramics) and I'm basically a glorified usher LOL..

But I chose the position of FOH (front of house) because you're moving the whole time.. I didn't want to sit behind an information desk or box office all day - i wanted to be physically moving and there are 3 flights of the master staircase as well that i'm trying to use more than the elevator when i have to go up or down to the areas of the theatre LOL..plus it's only a 5 minute drive from my home which was also a consideration when I was looking for something to volunteer at...

there are lots of great shows and relatively big artists who play there during the season (sept-may) and a lot of conferences during the off season (large companies hold product launches in the theatres, and a lot of dance competitions, music festivals and gradualion ceremonies right now. I love the social aspect of it; and that you are moved around during each event so you aren't just standing or sitting somewhere.. sometimes you're inside the theatre, or outside greeting patrons, and you can sit or stand as you please whether you're inside the event or outside scanning tickets or just being available for "where's the bathroom" questions .. and they switch you up with inside/outside every 1/2 hour or so.. also there's a lot of classes in the studios as well it's a pretty cool place.. anyway last night was some big bodybuilding finals.. the event went all day but I worked the last half which were the finals.. holy cow those people are fit!! lol but the music was awesome too so I had a great time chatting with people and watching the competition.. I did a festival choir competition a few weeks ago that was also a blast and great music.. and a psychology conference for teachers that was a snoozefest LOL.. although Milove you might have enjoyed it as part of it involved dealing with high risk youth!

Anyway we are required to do an average of 12 hours a month which is quite doable even while i'm still working full time as I have lots of time off during the week instead of on weekends like normal people. I'm doing a 4 hr shift this afternoon for a kids dance competition - its the final dress rehearsal where parents can take photos and video as nothing is allowed during the actual show so I've been warned it can be a little chaotic from parents rushing the stage at the end of each group competing hahaha... and next week we get to attend the launch party for the 2017/2018 season to see the lineup of shows and artists coming ... it's a preview for us before the public gets to see it and rumour has it they usually have a "surprise" performance from one of the performers who will be appearing during the season.. should be fun and I get to tick that partiuclar goal off my "to do" list... now to start working on the "increasing physical activity" portion!! don't think that one is going to be as much fun tho!

Howdy Hatters- I just spent the last 20 minutes catching up on the 38 new posting since I last checked in!
Milove- hope you get to see the doc soon and that all is well.
Snooozie- sounds like your shoulder is feeling better thank goodness, and your volunteering sounds awesome!
Vail- I am glad fasting works for you. And funny about the genes. I have always had a much harder time losing weight than my peers at any age. In my case I"m convinced some type of hormonal imbalance is the culprit!
Suzie- boy oh boy do I hear you about struggling when your routine is disrupted!

For the life of me I can no longer seem to get any images I wish to post to be smaller. I resize them with my photo software which used to work, but for some reason it doesn't anymore.

Anyway, I am back, and have been back from my long weekend of festivities in Michigan. It was sooooo cold with high temps at 42F and non stop rain, while back in Tucson it reached 104, so I was having texting debates with my desert dwelling friends as to which was worse, being freezing cold and wet or blazing hot. Luckily I took a lot of vitamins and stuff with me and I was able to fight off the sore throat that started from the drastic change in weather. Regardless of the weather, I still had a lot of fun. So much so that I found it difficult to get back to business when I returned. I can feel my motivation returning now, though, so psyched to have a good upcoming week.

While reading posts earlier, I noticed a discussion about cholesterol meds. When i started this journey something like 5 years ago, my cholesterol numbers were bad with the bad stuff being high and the good stuff being low. I made bunches of lifestyle and nutrition changes, and my numbers became healthy along with my blood sugar. Then to my surprise at my next blood work up, the cholesterol was an issue again. So I thought about what I may have changed, and realized I had stopped taking Fish Oil supplements during that period of time. I started taking them regularly again and Voila! My cholesterol levels were back into the healthy range. And it's been like that ever since- take fish oil, good numbers, don't take it, bad numbers. I told my sister about it, and it helped her too. One tip is to make sure to take a good brand and keep it in the refrigerator. If you find that it makes you burp it means it is rancid. Anyway, it sure works for me (and my sister) and I don't have to take any cholesterol meds because of that, so thought I would mention it in case any one is interested in seeing if it works for them.

Well, that's it for now. Hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend.

I didn't know fish oil had to be kept in the fridge. Thanks for the tip!

The volunteering sounds interesting, Snoozie. I understand you not wanting to do something too emotionally stressful. I've been thinking along those lines myself, as I can retire in less than two years - unfortunately, I can't actually afford, but have been thinking about retiring from my job and doing a lower paid, less stressful one. But I was also thinking of volunteering to give me the motivation to get out of the house! Like you, I've volunteered in the past. Your volunteer job sounds really interesting and stimulating. I love the theatre!
