    Morning Hatters!

Vail - yup exactly that - I simply can't handle anything too emotionally stressful right now - maybe down the road that will change but right now, it's all about ME - and this combines everything I was looking for; fun, interesting, social and physically requires me to move lol.

I don't really WANT to work at all after I retire... but financially that's probably not going to be an option here either.. which I think is why I am struggling with giving up a good paying job with benefits, when I might have to go back to working in a bookstore for minimum wage or the like.. but i'm starting to realize just how hard 33 years of shift work has been on me physically, and if I don't take care of myself I won't have to worry about any job down the road!! and I do NOT want to be like some of the guys at work... 45+ years on and still working.. well not actually working but showing up and getting a pay check.. I may not have a lot going on but no way in hell do I wanna keep working just because I have nothing else to do with my time..!! I think it's a head game and i'm winning at the moment lol... but its definitely not an easy decision for most of us!

Susan - welcome home!! So glad you had a great time .. I did feel for you with the cold temps - especially because it was such a shift from those at home you've been used to! Thanks for the fish oil reminder; I have been thinking about it lately and i'm willing to try anything to get off the meds!!

i'll have to do some research tho - i know there is still a lot of conflict as to whether taking fish oil has actually made any difference in some studies, but it's like everything else in the world ... always going to find the pros and the cons groups so will do a little homework first..

I know liquid is better than pills but I also know there are a lot of fillers used in pill ones that your body can't digest so you don't get the benefits of the oil inside.. or the pills don't actually have the 3 kinds of stuff you want from a fish oil supplement.. but that's all I can remember so homework for me !

I can remember as kids my mom feeding us cod liver oil by the tsp and the shudders that came along with LOL.. but i'll def be researching that this week while i'm off.. my "to do" list is getting pretty long already but that's a good thing :)

Thanks, Susan! I don’t mind the big pictures…They are easier for me to see….especially the ones you take of the outside scenery. Will you tell the name of the fish oil capsules that you like? I forgot what you told me before. I need to try them.

Snoozie, I am so jealous!! The volunteering sounds wonderful, just up my alley of things I would love to do…. I totally understand about not wanting anything too emotional … You need to be out there enjoying yourself. I know you enough to know that you get in plenty of good deeds for others anyway.

Vail, I admire you with your fasting technique….I can only make 18 to 20 hrs…not days at a time…You go girl!

Milove, I hope you are resting and de-stressing as much as you can.

Carol, I hope all is well with you, and you are de-stressing also.

Suzy, I know what you mean about having to fix dinner for your son. I am the same way…Only difference is I couldn’t hold off on eating and ju st fasting after cooking…Nope, not gonna’ happen with me. I admire your strength!

Gail- the brand I use, which was recommended to me by a nutritionist at Canyon Ranch, is Nordic Naturals. It comes in various types, but this is what I use:

Vail- it was recommended to me by a few nutritionists to refrigerate not only the omega tablets but also all oils and to avoid cooking with oil or eating fried foods because evidently it is when oil is heated that carcinogens are released. I admit that I don't stick to that religiously, but I am mindful of it, and I at least keep my omega in the fridge. It's not mandatory , though, and it is not kept in the fridge section at the store. The thought of rancid fish oil grosses me out though, so I do refrigerate it lol.

Snooozie, I am clueless as to what research says about fish oil, so I would love it if you would be so kind as to share any of your research findings. I don't believe the nutritionist recommended it to me for my cholesterol per say, but I just happened to discover that it helps mine because of my regular interval blood tests. I think different peeps bodies react in different ways to things, but I can say that it makes all the difference for me with my cholesterol, so crossing my fingers it may help you and others :-)

Thanks!! Putting it in my phone notes now...or I will forget again.... It will be a bit before I get to buy any. But fingers crossed xxxx , that may be the element I need to add to my other vitamins.

Hi all just home an gotta hit the sack Susan love the pics !! Lovely to hear from everyone too will write more tomorrow Susan I didn't have much time to start my research this morning before I left - still have a long way to go but I did remember for my nutrition classes her saying to always make sure you get a third-generation pill type where the casing is made from organic so it dissolves so you can have the benefit of the pills a lot of the big brands use plastic and other fillers in the capsules. Also remember reading a study that showed after 10 years no significant decrease in heart attacks and something else from using fish oil but like I said earlier we all know it's whoever pays for the study that gets the results they want! And I still think my grandmother and mother forcing cod liver oil down our throats had the right idea!! I did remember hearing that was supposed to be at least two other things along with the fish oil but for the life of me I couldn't remember why and that's where I had just started I went to a consumer review group here but haven't finished yet I'll try to post a pic of the site that I took so I can find it again lol. But whether it helps in certain areas or not I still think it's a very good idea to take it. But I do know it's also extremely expensive so I think that's pretty horrible if they're telling it to be so helpful it shouldn't be so expensive

I just wrote a post and it disappeared! I can't remember what I was saying ... I loved the picture of the cocktails (and sisters) and unfortunately your martini experience inspired me to drink cocktails on Friday night, including one with vodka, double cream, creme de cacao, hibiscus liquer and rose petals - definitely like a desert! Not something I'll be drinking every day!

I also said that if I want a really quick idea of the evidence for a supplement and don't want to trawl through research papers, I sometimes have a quick look at webmd. Here's the page for fish oils http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-993-fish oil.aspx?activeingredientid=993 . The evidence is under "uses". I also find the interactions tab useful, to get an idea of whether supplements interact with my medication. Obviously not medical advice, and I have read some criticisms of webmd, but I like having the information in one place.

Oh, I remember the other thing I was saying was thanks for the information on oils, Seehe, and now you mention it, I'm sure I've heard that before. I usually use good quality rapeseed oil for frying rather than olive oil, due to the higher smoke point. But I'm wondering if ghee would be better? I'd also be more likely to keep ghee in the fridge!

    Morning Hatters

LOL Vail - looks like you were having one of my moments with the posting!!! I see my pic didn't come out - basically the one I was looking at was a consumer review site that analyzed the different fish oils and what to watch for..

mainly it said that "a lot exceed the recommended 1500mg and did not have enough EPA and DHA which will greatly affect your health improvement goals" and secondly they found many manufacturers were using farm raised fish, not deep sea and that it is always better to buy a product tht uses high quality natural ingredients rather than those created in a lab." Most companies slap on a label that says omega 3 often not even including how much is in each pill.

oh and another thing they mentioned (that I noticed YOUR brand also has Seehe - is to ensure its "third party" tested - I see your pic above has the label for 3rd party purity tested so i'm see yours is a top quality one like CR said :)

This particular place did their own top 3 choices, and your Nordic naturals made their top 3 Susan lol!!

The only reason it came in 3rd on this particular site according to their review was "In addition, this product does not have a 365 day money back guarantee. Since the company itself has a good track record and most consumers I spoke to were pretty satisfied with it, I still consider this to be a solid product. "

kinda neat yours was right up there in the top 3!

Anyway I will definitely check out the website vail - too often people forget to tell their docs they are taking any kind of supplement and some like st johns wort and a few others can really mess with some medications so that's next on my list to check it out. thanks for posting!!

I'm down a wee bit... not a huge loss but if the scales are moving left i'll take whatever it wants to throw at me ha.

I pulled a completely bonehead move yesterday coming out of a parking lot; just not paying attention and went up over a really high curb.. and then backed off it and managed to rip some big long part above the tire off so after physio i'm off to the mechanics.. sigh... I managed to stuff it back up in the wheel well but the bolts ripped off so don't wanna go too far til I get it looked at.. in case it falls down again! Stupid move-I was in a parking lot I am in almost every day but parke in a spot I don't usually and never even saw the damn curb... note to self Snooz... pay attention!!

Oh for goodness sake! I feel like a complete fool! Many apologies for having to read through everything twice. How embarrassing! I wish there was a way to delete posts! Maybe I can flag one of them up or something.

Congratulations on the loss, Snoozie! And commiserations on the wheel damage. So easily done.

Good morning Hatters! I'm sorry to hear about the car mishap Snoozie. I absolutely hate car problems. Mine was in the shop last week to the tune of $340...just standard stuff. It's always something.

I take several different supplements and I really wonder if they do anything at all....but I'm not willing to risk stopping just in case they do! Lol! I've recently started taking Krill. I tried fish oil awhile ago and it didn't agree with me. I'm hoping the krill will be effective in its place. I always wonder whether what I'm buying is very good quality. I need to be more like you ladies and actually do some research.

I've FINALLY gotten back on track with my eating. I hurt my elbow somehow and when I tried to go to yoga my downward dog ended up being three legged. I had to back off, for now. I'm hoping it will resolve itself in a couple days. We're going on a two night hike this weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday. I hope I'm up for it but we've got to start somewhere.

    Have a great day everyone!

Snooozie- Glad you enjoyed my photos and thanks for the Omega info. Happy to hear my brand stacks up :) Yay you about your loss !!!! Such a great feeling to have the scale moving in the right direction  And sorry about the curb job. I just side swiped a curb with my husband's brand new suv cause it's longer than my suv, but thank God it didn't hurt it.

Vail- lol about my martini influence : and glad you enjoyed the photo. Btw, I also frequently refer to webmd.

Suzy- I feel your pain with the car bill. I just dropped $500 on my 60,000 mile service, and that was at a reasonable mechanics as opposed to the dealership. Glad you were able to get back on track- I'm working on that- and sorry about the elbow. When are you going on your hike? My husband and I rented a cabin on Mount Lemon on June 4th and 5th for our anniversary, and I also hope to get in some good hikes as the temperature is so much cooler at that elevation. We are going to take the dogs which slows us down a bit, but they love it so.

Gail- you are most welcome. Hope it turns out to be as helpful for you when you get the chance to try it out.

Hope everyone is having a terrific Tuesday :)

I'm just grateful I didn't sign up for the paid version! The free version isn't a very good advertisement for it. Anyway, I managed to delete one of my post by flagging it - there was an option to say it was one of my own posts that I wanted to delete.

Congratulations on your anniversary - have a lovely time!

Suzy your 3 legged downward dog visual had me choking on my coffee with laughter !!

Susan what a lovely trip for your anniversary - nice!!

Vail - I cant remember what I ate, but something I pigged out on thinking it was a treat also turned out to be as good as I remember - sadly it didn't stop me from eating it but I was disappointed I kept eating when it wasn't the kick I was looking for :(

i'm battling a head/chest cold - I swear I haven't had a cold in YEARS so I guess it was my time but honestly.. i'm on vacation and between physio and now this i'm not accomplishing much of the chores I had planned - part of that is being a slug tho..... I did do a show at the living arts centre last night as I had already committed to it; thankfully it was a kids choir and my coughing fits only happened during the loud parts! the only good thing about this cold is that since I can't taste anything, im not very hungry so have been mainly eating oatmeal eggs and fruit.. i'm not sure I can face another egg today tho so maybe i'll live on the edge and try some cheese and crackers! :)

Snoozie I hope you're feeling better by now. I rarely get sick also so when I do succumb it's awful. Take care of yourself!

Seehe I hope you had a wonderful anniversary!

Our hiking trip was good...two nights of camping and three days of hiking. We didn't go as far as we planned...we were just too tired after climbing uphill for three miles in a row! My husband assured me that I would lose weight after everything we did and how little we ate but no! I was up four pounds this morning. I'm hoping it is water weight because camp food tends to be higher in sodium. Time will tell. It was a bummer though. I'm proud to say that I got right back on my healthy eating today!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Let's make it a good week!

Glad the trip was fun if exhausting Suzy! I get your frustration over no loss I figured after being sick and hardly eating for a week there would be some loss but no I'm up a bit too ..... But I've decided I'm just waiting for the Woosh factor to kick in - reminding myself weight loss isn't linear so betcha yours was sodium and will be gone in a heartbeat !!

Well it's the middle of the night but I can't sleep ( I suspect from taking a decongestant) so thought I'd pop in and say hi. Love the pizza cat and fluffy cat photos. I'm more like the pizza cat these days. I've been off the wagon and trying to psych myself into getting back on track. And good for you . Suzy , for getting right back on track! I'll bet you anything it is water weight . Snooozie,- sorry about the head cold. I think they are highly under rated cause they sure make one feel miserable. I'm not sure if I'm fighting one right now or just dealing with bad allergies or something , but my sinuses are driving me nuts. We are leaving for Mt. Lemmon today, too. I'm hoping the change in the air will help. On another note, I thought I'd share this video I saw on Facebook about McDonalds fries- it will cure you of any cravings you may ever have ! Suzanne, I hope you are feeling better, I agree with Susan, they are highly underrated...they can bring down a grown man! Maybe I better change that to a grown woman...men are horrible at any kind of sickness! lol

lol thanks for the commiserations ladies... I swear a head cold that lasts forever is like a paper cut - it can be more painful than a gaping wound!! and yes I would like to be a MAN with this cold Gail too... to just huddle in bed playing with my toy airplanes calling for someone to bring me water and Kleenex lol. But we don't do that do we! Its just a royal PAIN in the butt; I had to resort to cold pills tho to stop the nose drips in public ! hahaha

anyway... I watched the video - I've never been a Mickey D's fan BUT I do head for Burger King for my fries fix and let's face it.. they all do the same horrors to them.. so I did watch it - the most scary part for me was the farmers not being able to go into the fields for 5 days after spraying the taters with such a toxic pesticide, and the the SIX WEEKS of the taters McD's insists on using, having to be put in a special holding thing building til the toxic chemicals disperse... six weeks? lord love a duck... that's pretty scary!

I've seen that guy in the video on a food documentary on PBS - I really like him. And on the note of the fries.. I also remember seeing a video once showing that all these fast food places deliberately cook the fries at a lower temperature in the vats of fat, to make sure they absorb a lot more of the grease; then they pile on the salt and that's what sets off the satiety and cravings in us for them....

Well worth the watch and will hopefully make me think twice the next time I consider hittin the drive thru! Thanks Susan!

Had my physio this morning and got in some good groceries for the upcoming dayshift - still hoping the scale will show some results Monday but more focused on just better and less eating right now!

    Have a great weekend Hatters

ugh! no french fries and not even mashed potatoes....and that was just from Snoozie describing it! haven't seen the video, ...seriously, it may just help me with my potato cravings all the way round..

Thankfully I'm not a big French fry fan....good thing! I'm actually not much of a potato fan, unless it's a sweet potato.

Ladies, I'm struggling! I'm in a vicious cycle of doing great, lose a couple pounds, fall off the wagon, gain it back, go way off then gain another couple.....then start over. It hit me this morning that I've been on this cycle for THREE YEARS now!!!! I know I can do it...heck, I've done it....but I just can't seem to get my act together. I'm going to be 56 in one week and I swore I was going to be at my goal by age 55. Ugh!!!!! Any tips on finding your motivation again? I should take a photo of me in a bikini and make 8x10 copies to put in the cupboards and fridge! That would be enough to scare me into starving myself!

I know there's no magical answer. If there was then we would have all found it by now. I appreciate having you ladies to "talk" to. It helps to know that I'm not alone in this frustrating journey.
