Jean - sounds like you're doing what you can! My cardiologist said she didn't expect a shortage on the generic drugs I take (which are sort of dirt cheap) but who knows if she knows. I have 7 months here after doing self-pay. Avoiding Medicare was easy with a new prescription. I just went to a different pharmacy. I can only do that because my drugs cost like 98 cents for 60 days.0

I drive a 2004 Toyota Sienna which I LOVE! Low mileage since I work at home. I take it to the dealer once a year. I decided the dealer would be too many people so decided to go to Jiffy Lube when they opened this morning. I was the first customer. Later on a retired nurse came in. We sat on opposite sides of the waiting room and chatted (I had a book (well, kindle); she didn't).
The best part? One of the young men came out to tell me the back of my van wouldn't open. I said yes, it does, would you like me to do it? With three strapping young men watching I strolled out into the work area and effortlessly flipped open the hatchback. The nurse and I couldn't stop giggling. Made my day.
The grocery stores here are just plain empty in a lot of aisles. I guess people don't think they'll be able to get produce because the salad dressing aisle looked untouched.
I've tried Amazon Fresh two days now. A missing item both days. Yesterday I spent 35 minutes on "chat" with customer service. I'm not going to bother today. Lesson learned - amazon fresh as a last resort.
DH keeps saying we have plenty of stuff and then giving me lists of things to buy.

Maryanne--That is a good one about the hatchback. Gloat, gloat!! Make sure you behave yourself; I don't want you paying up to a $5,000 fine for disobeying the Governor's emergency directives.
One of my benefits of where I live is being able to see the live broadcasts of Ohio, Kentucky and WV when something is "breaking news.." I turned it on in advance to catch our governor's address at 3pm. Instead, aroundf 2:30pm, I got the Ohio Health Officials live advisosry. Ohio now has 67 cases confirmed.
I'm now watching Dr. Phil doing a half way decent show on coronavirus.
I wonder how they will decide how much money to send us if they do decide to financially help Americans weather the financial storm.0 -
Apparently over night the House further gutted the already gutted sick leave bill that is going to go to the senate. Any of us hoping this would finally bring universal paid sick leave are sorely disappointed.0

What a beautiful cat!
Well, we have our first case and it supposedly is in the Eastern Panhandle. Our restaurants, bars, and casinos are closed except for carry out and drive thru. Movie theaters in most places are closed now. Netflix, Hulu, Prime and others are going to be very popular.0 -

We had our first death in our county reported today. And the man’s wife is to be tested now. I do not even know how many total cases there are in our area, but I know it’s at least double digits. Our bars and restaurants are also closed for dine in service. Businesses are closing temporarily, or in some cases it may become permanent. I got a notice from my nail salon that they are closing for 2 weeks. I desperately need a hair cut, but I will wait. Gyms are closed and all of our schools for at least 2 more weeks. Some of the universities have already stated that they are considering the semester over. What a mess!0
-
Pam--It gets very real when a death from COVID-19 occurs close to you. It is a new world right now with many unknowns. They haven't closed salons here yet and I had an appointment at the end of the month. I did, however, contact the stylist to see if she had an earlier opening.0
-
My vet and I talked Monday about the prospect of for the first time ever skipping our hair appointments. I think I'd be irresponsible not to. My cats (Dubbs cats and colony cats) are more imprtant.
I haven 't seen my sister for several years. She sent me a photo last Thanksgiving. She hasn't cut or colored her hair in a year. So I know what I'll look like. Add losing weight and wow, won't be a good look! LOL! (The more weight I lose the older I look.)0 -
Continuing his cluelessness:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., put his foot down firmly against letting senators vote electronically from wherever they might be.
What ever happened to leadership?0 -
Starting Tuesday, Social Security’s field office network will be closed to the public in most situations until further notice because of the coronavirus public health crisis, administration officials said. Offices that hear disability insurance appeals also are closed.
Service will continue to be available via the agency’s toll-free line, (800) 772-1213, and its website. Payments to more than 69 million Social Security beneficiaries are not affected.

The Bureau of Public Debt is located in the city I go to often. It employs 1800 people. I wonder if they are working from home. Whatever, it sounds as if they and the D.C. office are going to have an interesting future.
The Parkersburg office is responsible for managing, selling and accounting for the more than $17 trillion that U.S. taxpayers owe to themselves, to Social Security, and to foreign investors. It's a debt so large it takes a team of 19 accountants just to calculate it each day. Clad in jeans and sweaters, they work quietly in cubicles on the first floor of a 39-year-old federal office building in downtown Parkersburg, compiling data from hundreds of sources to calculate the national debt to the penny. (USA Today 2013)
That was 7 years ago; wonder what the figures are now? One of my former students was one of those accountants earning a 6 digit salary when she retired.0 -
I’m hearing from friends about having their dental, ob/gyn appointments, and colonoscopy appointments cancelled. Also about difficulty getting medications refilled. One of my friends who is a therapist said most of her clients are cancelling while a few are doing telephone sessions with her. A scary time for her especially since she needs the income. This is my friend whose husband died suddenly in January. She said she feels like Dr. Doolittle as she wanders around her house talking to the cat and dog for company. She is accustomed to eating most of her meals out but can’t now and is afraid of even having food delivered using Door Dash or Uber Eats. She’s always suffered some from anxiety and I think this situation is really feeding that.0

I think therapy by phone could be in demand right now, with everyone's anxiety at a super high level! Maybe different ways of getting the word out that she's available to do that?
I asked my internist's office about phone appointments and they said no.
I just saw a strange sight. Setting the scene: Hospitals around here have opened outposts in some of the strangest areas. One has taken over about 1/3 of a failing strip mall. I was driving around back when a man on a motorized scooter pulled up to what appeared to be a back door (the main entrance is out front). He was greeted by two people in full protective gear - masks, gowns, gloves, boots. I wonder if they're doing temperature checks and he had a fever.0 -
Other than fund raising events (which are not even a monthly occurrence), I leave our house mostly just to go to the grocery store/post office/storage unit/drive through ATM and the colonies. So basically limited human contact in my normal life.0

Me at the cardiologist last week:

Pam--If your friends are having difficulies getting their prescriptions filled, is it because they are trying to get a supply earlier than normal? I had to call Humana, tell them what I wanted refilled early so they could issue an override to permit the prescriptions to be filled.
Maryanne--Most of my human contact was with the people and students at work. No one in my family lives close and people don't visit much here. Telephone conversations are usually business as people like texting.
I went to town to deposit my work check in the bank and get some cash back. I noticed they were wearing gloves at the drive thru.0 -
I had a slight tickle in my throat during the donation from drinking water. Probably went down the wrong way. I told the tech that I feel guilty if I’m out in public and I have a stray cough or sneeze. I can imagine people giving me the look like what is that sick person doing out in public. She knew I was healthy and it was just that single cough.0

That graphic I was trying to copy didn't copy! Nothing to see here....

I ate two cough drops at the cardiologist trying to make sure I don't cough.
DH (who ran a hospital lab for decades) tells me that they have to keep you awake to donate blood. I assume he knows what he's talking about and since there's no way they could keep me conscious I've never tried. When I have blood drawn for labwork they have to have somewhere I can lie down.
Yes, I'm a wuss!0 -
People don't understand the proper use of rubber gloves. I keep hearing people say things like "I keep a (one) pair in the car to use at the store and gas pump and ...". That's totally worthless unless you disinfect them after each use (which I don't think is what they're saying).

Yeah, it's a terrible time in history to have a chronic cough.0 -
Did you see the article about the guy who bought up 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizers? He was reselling on Amazon for huge markups. Someone turned him in for price gouging and Amazon and EBay have banned him as a seller.the state of Tennessee is looking into charging him with price gouging. He ended up donating most of it to Tennessee organizations and a smaller amount in KY since he’d bought hand sanitizers in both place. He won’t profit from his selfishness but he still may be prosecuted. And he’s lost his livelihood since he’s banned from Amazon, etc.0

I saw that!
I also saw an article about distilleries that are making hand sanitizers and most giving it away.

I emailed my sister and best friend the codes to our outside key lockboxes. Neither is close enough to really care for the cats but both have the means to hire a pet sitter if all else fails (to be reimbursed by us or our estates). I'll make sure our neighbors and a couple other friends have their email addresses.
I need to think about who all needs to know what else!
I'm finding it hard (very hard) to concentrate on work.0
