I lost a pound and a half last week. I've been keeping sporadic weight records for years. I looked back and the last time I was at this weight was November 2011!!

Well, apparently we are getting a freezer on Friday. I don't look forward to getting the cats sequestered (that's how I broke my wrist two years ago). But once we have it, we'll be glad. We're not going to completely fill it - DH is worried the other one may die - but if I can just spread out what we have - and make it a little more accessible - and add a little bit - I'll be a happy camper.

Now, this is depressing! In some locations, Wendys will be taking hamburgers off its menu because of difficulty of getting the beef. It is expected to be temporary.

I suspect we've just seen the start of the supply chain problems. This pandemic is laying bare all kinds of issues - with the meat supply chain, with industries reliant on the restaurant industry, with reliance on overseas for critical medical supplies, etc. and of course with the cheeto.

I just made a list of all the doctor appointments and tests that I've had to reschedule or that are overdue or due in the next 3 or 4 months. I have a list of 12 items!!!!!! No wonder the healthcare industry is hurting if everyone is acting like I am. When everyone starts to reschedule - some day - how long will we have to wait for an appointment?

I have an appointment tomorrow with my retina specialist. I was supposed to see him a month ago for what I hoped would be my last visit until next year but I cancelled it due to concerns about the virus. I decided to keep my appointment tomorrow. I will wear my mask and hopefully all of his staff will as well. I don’t anticipate that there will be many people waiting to see him as his clientele are mostly older and I presume most will be postponing routine visits. DH will drive me but likely will wait in the car.

That all makes perfect sense. There are some doctor visits that are just too important.

The metric that could tell us when it’s safe to reemerge

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/05/04/metric-that-could-tell-us-when-its-safe-reemerge/

Excess mortality is the number of deaths from any cause that both occur in a given time period and surpass the expected number. Deaths in the United States have been carefully counted for more than a century. These “all-cause mortality” numbers are extraordinarily stable. We know to a remarkable extent how many Americans are expected to die every day.

    ---

This is also why excess mortality presents an unusual opportunity. By closely monitoring excess mortality, which is occurring all over the United States, it is possible to determine when it is safe to reopen the economy and when is too soon.

As long as excess mortality rates are observed, the effect of SARS-CoV-2 remains too substantial to return to normal. Conversely, as excess mortality abates, it’s possible that physicians will continue to observe that some people who die have also tested positive. Even so, if death rates remain at expected levels, the virus is not posing an unusual threat to our normal way of life.

I just rescheduled 2 appointments for uS. We had dental cleanings June 3rd. We don’t think we’ll be back by then. We had to take appointments in July but that’s okay. DH has an eye appointment June 13th. We’ll probably be back by then. If not, we can wait until June 1st to decide if we need to reschedule. We moved his cardiology appointment to July as well. I think that’s all we have to change for now.

We have an appointment to have the truck serviced Thursday. I canceled an appointment in April because of virus concerns. It’s the first service since we got it last July. We’re about 1500 miles over the recommended mileage. Since our drive home is 1500 miles, we can’t put it off any longer. We’ll wear masks and socially distance. If it’s not too hot, we may decide to wait outside. I’m hoping the dealership isn’t very crowded.

I guess a reliable vehicle for a 1500 mile trek is sort of important! I would be surprised if the dealer was super busy.

Someday in the far future when/if all this is over, if you ever have time and want to stop off 95 during your trip to or fro (at a reststop or somewhere) and meet in person, I'd be happy to join you for a meal or something.

Meeting up some time sounds nice. Let’s see what 2021 brings. When I canceled the April appointment, the scheduler told me the service dept was empty right then. We probably should have gone then but we were very cautious about going anywhere. Let’s hope that very few customers are there when we go Thursday.

I have been doing the solo act since Friday, March 13 when the students were sent home. Since that time, I saw the MRI technician and brief contact with the drive thru once a week. I am looking forward to tomorrow to get my nails done and hair cut. I guess then, if necessary, I can make it another two months. I am handling it better than expected but the car certainly is getting a rest.

    Love it, Maryanne!

Our nail and hair salons are allowed to open up on Friday. I will try to get appointments for both but haven’t been able to contact my nail salon yet. Their voicemail box is full and they aren’t answering the phone yet. I can text my hairdresser and they usually are very quick to respond.

I need to leave in about an hour for my eye appointment. DH still plans to stay in the car while I’m inside.

The Blue Angels just did their flyover in tribute to first responders in our area. We are about 5 miles from one of the hospitals they flew over but we couldn’t see them. DH thinks he heard them and was disappointed he couldn’t see them. I didn’t expect that we would be able to see them from our house, but he did.

The Blue Angels flew over Baltimore - Sunday maybe. DH thought we might be able to see them on their way back to the airport but we didn't.

They probably flew on to another city. Their flyover here of the entire D/FW area took less than an hour, then they flew on to do the flyover for Houston, then I believe they were going to New Orleans and from there, to their home base in Pensacola. Quite a packed day for them!

We’ve been getting take out from our favorite deli a couple of times a week. Jeff’s a small business and we want to see him survive. He makes most of his items gluten free on request which DH needs. I’ve been calling in take out for weeks. FL started dine in Monday at 25% capacity. Restaurants can also expand outdoor seating if they can socially distance the tables. I thought I’d wait before eating on site but Jeff expanded the outdoor seating. There was only one other diner and we picked a table 20 feet away. Plus he had his back to us. It was a beautiful day and I felt much less stress being able to do something normal. Salons are not open yet so I don’t have to decide about hair or nails yet.

DH is working hard on making room in the basement for the new freezer. Hopefully once we have that I'll be able to space things out a little more but I'm not going to add tons of expensive meat. Maybe some bread and milk. I'm still not trying to use the meat but I'll be happy to have room for a few frozen things that we'll eat in the current week.

I'm glad to be able to go out to feed the colonies but not anxious to go anywhere there are people and no plans to do so. If it were just me and DH I might take more risks but I can't risk the cats - ours and the colonies - being without me.

    From Newsweek:

he Kentucky Senate race between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his likely Democratic opponent Amy McGrath is shaping up to be one of the tightest, most contentious and expensive contests of the 2020 election cycle.

Polls have shown the race to be incredibly close, with the candidates either being tied or separated by single digits.

I made a small contribution to Amy's campaign just to add my encouragement and get on her mailing list. Boy, I wish we could take Mitch out!

Downside - somehow I got an email from the Trump campaign. Boo, hiss! I marked it spam!

That’s interesting that you got spammed by Trump people. I too hope MCConnell loses. I was watching Stephen Colbert and he was interviewing Robert Dinero. Dinero had very harsh words about Trump and compared people working for him as selling their souls to the devil. Only a very few people like Dr. Bright have had the courage to speak out against Trump’s slow reaction and putting more people at risk. Those few have sacrificed careers to speak the truth. What a pity so few in the government have his courage.

I completely understand your feelings that you need to keep the cats fed and safe. We usually spend a night in a hotel in Jacksonville during our drive back and forth to FL. There’s a small number of cats that hide in the bushes outside the door leading out from the breakfast area. DH can’t resist going out to see them. One or two are friendly and will approach him. Maybe it’s because he has a piece of bacon for them. He really should buy a pouch of cat treats or something healthier than bacon. Most of the cats are skittish and hide in the bushes. We really miss having cats at home but the travel is problematic.

When our DVR died, I lost my copy of the PBS show Hamilton's America. Left me totally bereft I'll tell you. There are no DVDs for sale on PBS, I'm guessing they couldn't get the rights to do so. I just discovered there are promotional copies of the show floating around. I'm so excited! Supposedly they are the entire show and not just highlights. Time will tell!

The things you don't think about:

How do you teach braille remotely? Ms. Heather Johnson, MSB Braille Instructor, has been planning and creating braille reading and writing activities and mailing them home to her students since school closed on March 13th. She has been touching base via video and email to review her students work and to connect and answer questions from their families. She has recorded videos of herself giving directions, shared videos on how to load braille paper, care for a braille writer and how the braille dots correspond with the keys! She is thankful for her mailman who has picked up her mail and delivered it to the post office for delivery to her students. (shown in the photo below)

That sounds pretty daunting. CSounds like she’s figured out how to continue teaching her students Braille.
