Love the cartoon, Maryanne! DH keeps telling me that Biden is senile, and I just can’t believe he doesn’t see the reality that of the two, tRump is by far the least able to form and express a coherent thought.

Nothing new. PT today, and U.S hits new record with 50,000 cases in a single day.

    My COVID TX Emergency Alert
    Options
    ‎06-28-2020 11:45 AM

Of course I've been keeping up with TX COVID stats, well aware that we were in trouble.

However, I, and several of my friends, were surprised when our phones began the screech of an Emergency Alert last night. I figured it was an Amber alert, since sadly, there seems to be more of them since the pandemic started, with increase in domestic discord and violence.

I was wrong, it was an atypical alert, that in the past, I never would have dreamed I'd be seeing. It read: STAY HOME. The COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly across Bexar County. Local hospitals are approaching capacity. Protect yourself and your family, out for essential activities only, with a face covering. Avoid groups of people outside your household. STAY SAFE. *Wow, they finally declared it an emergency.*

This was repeated in AM local news. We have 219 people in ICU, just in my county, with the highest number of positive tests since this all began. And, we're not nearly as bad as Houston, from what I'm hearing. We're turning into NY.

Fellow Texans beware and stay safe. For those elsewhere, never let your guard down, regardless of what you may be hearing. This is going to be a long ride.

I haven’t seen the news yet today. 50,000 cases in a day is staggering. Trump can’t really call Biden old since he’s 74 himself. I find it shocking that so many of his supporters are so entrenched in backing him that they can’t see what the rest of the world sees. The Emperor really has no clothes on but his followers can’t see that.

DH just read that Trump is planning a huge fireworks display on the National Mall for July 4th. They expect around 300,000 people. They’re giving out masks but people are not required to wear them. He must be trying to set a record for how many people he can infect in one place. It’s beyond sad and frightening.

Yeah, I don't get it and I never will.

You'd think he'd want to put his shrinking army of voters in cotton wool and safely hide them somewhere they can't get infected.

How long do folks think the front line medical workers are going to be able to keep this up? Yet I hear/read so little about that. That should terrify everyone of every political persuasion. We don't just need them for COVID. We need them for all the "normal" emergencies.

Even if those workers continue to drag themselves in - because they need a paycheck - how effective are they going to be? Yet all I hear/read about is beds and ventilators.

That’s true. He may infect and kill off some of the voters he’s counting on to re-elect him.

Jean, Bexar county is the San Antonio area. My friend who lives there is sheltering in place with her husband. Interestingly, her adult stepson who is autistic, has a job at the PX at the Air Force base. He is deemed an essential worker, so he has continued to go to work throughout this time. He has his own apartment, so he isn’t at risk of bringing the virus to them, but he is used to his parents helping him out and checking on him frequently. He was so proud when they explained to him what it meant to be deemed an essential worker.

My SIL is an RN in Houston. She works in case management and utilization review and hasn’t done bedside nursing for many years. She reports that their hospitals are close to being maxed out and her management is looking for volunteers to go to some of the hospitals that are hardest hit. She will not be doing that due to her underlying health issues of diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Her DIL is a director of nurses over a neuro ICU and at first she was fairly cavalier about the risks. I think she was of the mindset that it was just a bad flu and the media was hyping it too much. She has really changed her tune now and is insisting that her husband wear his mask. She’s also trying to figure out a different childcare option instead of daycare, but so far she hasn’t found an alternative.

In other news, our beaches are closed this weekend, so I consider that positive since people won’t regulate themselves. Our bars also are being closed or in some cases allowed to operate at much reduced capacity. As for me, I plan to stay home.

Pam - I plan to stay home as well. It hurts to know it may be a year or more before things like cat shows and flea markets resume. For me those were social occasions in addition to being fund raising. We always had a great time and I was able to get out and see people which doesn't happen a lot. It also hurts to know that I feel it would be dangerous to visit my dad (since he and my two brothers that he lives with or sees weekly won't stay home) and to know that this all means my sister isn't likely to come East anytime soon (I haven't seen her since my uncle's funeral in early 2017). Other things like grocery shopping and hair cuts I can learn to live without. I'm still internally debating just which doctor/dentist appointments to do. In some ways I'm lucky that we're so daggone busy at work. I don't have a lot of time for fretting. But occasionally my mind does wander ahead in time. E.g. grocery deliveries in the dead of winter? In snow???? Then I tell myself to cut it out and get back to work. LOL!

I confess sometimes I wonder whether, if not for the cats, I'd bother with the struggle. I've had a good life, a good career, left a mark (I think). Will I still feel the cats warrant the struggle if the cheeto wins? I am frankly not sure.

On a lighter note, I am looking forward to the release of the Hamilton movie. Because it will be on so late tomorrow night, I'll probably watch it for the first time Saturday (but not, I'm sure, for the last time). YEAH! I've been getting ready by listening to the CD in my van (again) this week.

I'm going to go back to looking at those penguins in Melbourne and try to cheer myself up. I really do love that photo/story.

I was watching the livestream NBC station in FT Myers. Many beaches in SW FL are closed this weekend. Sanibel has closed the beach parking lots and there’s a $200 fine for parking on street. I guess residents could walk to the beach. That wouldn’t be much of a crowd. Ft Myers is having 4 WWII planes do a flyover instead of fireworks and usual festivities. They’ll fly along the Coloosahatchie River and then fly over the city. Most of the city will see the planes from their backyards. I think that’s a nice way to make the holiday special without putting people at risk.

That's a great idea! I'm sure we'll hear tons of fireworks. I'm surprised I haven't heard any already.

In addition to Trump’s celebration on the national mall, tv listings show N.Y. having fireworks Saturday night. I’ll be happy to watch from home with no chance of exposure to Covid.

DH is getting his first haircut since March. He had to make an appointment. There was a 2 day wait for an opening. MA has strict conditions. It’s haircuts only. No eyebrows or beard trimming. Luckily DH can trim his own beard. He was pretty shaggy so I’ll be glad to see him looking like himself again.

OMG. I was watching a news segment on how fireworks companies are suffering because 60-75 percent of their income comes from July fourth. The company being interviewed is doing the MT Rushmore fireworks. No fireworks have been allowed there for a decade because of the risk of fire and damage to the monument. They showed a clip of a Trump saying incredulously that they couldn’t have fireworks there because of the environment? And we all know how much he values protecting the environment! He said it’s stone...what can burn and of course he reversed the policy.

    Hamilton has dropped!

I've signed up for Disney plus.

DH has taught me how to use his Amazon fire stick to get to it.

I'm set for a big 4th of July!

I could actually watch it tonight but I'm too tired. It's pretty long and I've been planning to watch it tomorrow when I thought it wasn't supposed to be available until late tonight.

Authorities expect mass evictions when restrictions prohibiting them are lifted in the city. I wonder how many animals will be abandoned/dumped/etc.

Our Smokie was evicted, put out with her people's furniture.

I ventured to the city today, the first time I've driven a long distance since my surgery 5 weeks ago. I just wanted out, plus get my nails done since the weather was good. I parked at the end of the mall with the entrance near the nail place. I found the doors locked. On my way back to the car, I saw some others try to get in.

I drove to the other side of the mall and saw the entrance near JCP was open. I went in and then had to walk clear to the other end of the mall to the nail place. Keep in mind that I've been sedentary for over 5 weeks. After getting my nails done, I had to walk back. I then went to the Outback for lunch and then returned home. I had no idea that I had gotten so out of shape. I had to lie down and rest when I got home.

There isn't anything going on here in my humble town for the 4th.

I think a lot of businesses are restricting shoppers to using certain doors. That’s probably what was going on with the mall. I need a mani/pedi but I’m putting it off until next week. DH got his first haircut. He called Wednesday for an appointment and the first opening was Friday. He said it was pretty well organized. While he was out, I asked him to pick up a can of whipped cream. I had to line up at the store the other day and didn’t really feel comfortable. I suggested he go into the organic market down at our upscale shopping center. We only needed one item so I was willing to pay extra so he didn’t have to get into a crowd. Turns out that cream was $6.50. That’s about twice the price of the supermarket. Guess that’s why I don’t normally shop there.

We have no holiday plans except staying home.

Post asking a lot of experts (including Dr. Fauci) basic questions about restaurants, grocery stores, hair salons, doctors/dentists, and more:

    Jean - cool facts!

I clicked around a little and stumbled on this. In my family we'd call this "Arendtsville humor" which is a little like saying "grade school humor":

What’s the best kind of tea to drink on July 4th? Liber-tea!
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over my freedom ringing.
I like my coffee black and my tea in the harbor.
Did you hear the joke about the Liberty Bell? It'll crack you up.
    Too cool for British rule.
    Red, white, and boozed.
    Party like it's 1776.
If you didn’t grill, did your Fourth of July even happen?
Why aren't there any knock-knock jokes about America? Because freedom rings.
