Danger close! Actually extra walking for many more hours can make up for gym (well except for the strength part!). Friend of mine who is 75 this year was demonstrating to me the balance and flexibility exercises he has been doing over and above giving me a good run for my money when it comes to walking. I almost landed on my back trying to emulate him!!!!!

OK Yooly: do you take any classes at the gym or do you do your own thing?

I've never been one on the "classes" thing and "specific time" and lets not forget the critical word "commitment"

But yeah, it is surprising how many muscles don't get jostled at all during one's "same-o-same-o" daily routine, even if said routine would be classified as "active"!

I go to a fairly cut-rate gym. Planet Fitness. No classes, no pool, no saunas, no frills. No designer juice bar or fancy workout wear. It’s a gym for people who basically want to exercise. I asked my physical therapist, doctor, and read up online for structuring my routine.

I do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes of stationary bike. I’ve increased intensity and speed over time. Afterward I do some weights - seated crunches, leg lifts, adductor and abductor work. Then it’s upper body and arms.

Time and intensity vary at times depending on how I feel. And I started SLOWLY and increased reps and times as the workout became easier. For example I will increase the incline on the treadmill or add an extra minute. Nothing to the point of injury. I see too many people attacking heavy, heavy weights far too great for their ability level.

PAV I take classes at my gym. It makes the work outs go way faster. I can’t always do all the things that the instructor is doing but I am moving the whole time and that’s burning calories. I get unmotivated if I’m doing machines and weights. I get bored and then it’s so much easier to convince myself not to go. With the classes I’m doing different stuff and it’s fun and so I stick with it.

I've never been a class type person. But maybe when the new and improved community center opens up I will check it out? maybe!

I truly admire people who go to structured exercise classes. I just don’t enjoy the group thing. I couldn’t get into Weight Watchers for the same reason. I’m a loner when it comes to weight and exercise. Funny cause I spent most of my working life as a teacher.
Besides I’m uncoordinated and can never keep up with the instructions while trying to exercise. Also no set class days/times so I go when it’s convenient for me - usually 6 am!

I’m starting my physical therapy tomorrow. I’m hoping to work on my mobility after hip bursitis and an arthritis diagnosis. The big problem is stairs and uneven surfaces. Not much pain, just a lot of stiffness. I got along okay traversing volcanoes and steep gardens in Hawaii with some hubby assistance.

Considering all my time on treadmills and stationary bikes, I don’t know what more can be done. Age and degenerate bones may win out.

Hey! Cut it out with the labeling of my babushka!

I suspect a lot of "stability" and flexibility work could be done!

And I even know someone in a more advanced age group than you who has been doing that kind of "flexibility" stuff in spite of weighing a *kitten* lot more than you!

Physical therapy wasn’t as onerous as I expected. I’m working with my previous therapist who seems happy to work with me. I’m not in pain so there’s that. And I get a nice massage. πŸ‘
Now to do the daily exercises to strengthen my weak areas.....

I in no way keep up with the instructors. I’m in the back doing my own thing. I have to modify a lot of the things due to my knees and my fat. But I am moving so that counts for me!

I’m feeling all fired up this morning. I’m so looking forward to being able to moving this beautiful body of mine more easily again.

I am eyeing the rowing machine with lust! πŸ˜³πŸ˜‚

Feeling a lot of gratitude this Thanksgiving.

Today will be a two puppy walk. With any luck I’ll find a friend to join me to make it a little less daunting … but even if I don’t it’s going to be a wonderful outing.

91 minutes of exercise today. I’m feeling pretty good. Going to cycle to scouts tonight so that will add another 20.

I am really hoping to get back to the gym and physical therapy next week. It might be a stretch though. That tumble onto concrete really hurt. My elbow is all scraped, shoulder aches, and worst of all is the enormous deep purple bruise on my hip. Same hip that’s having problems already. I’m hoping my range of mobility improves otherwise another week off.
I suppose I should get it checked out but I’m able to walk (slowly) and function.... on a positive note I got an RSV vaccine today which is recommended for the over 60s. Next week I get the new covid vaccine.

    Hope everything settles, Yooly.

    Great work, Nic!

I had two reasonable walks today. Wasn't wearing my fitbit, but I'm pretty sure together they were 10,000 steps. Which feels like a major accomplishment :) Had a bit of a lie down between the two - but that is fine by me.

Yooly do you have access to a pool? Maybe starting in the water with super low impact may help to get some exercise in without hurting yourself.

There will be no lurking Mr. PAV. You need to be fully present and participatory!

Scout - no pools nearby or at the gym. So I’ll just tough it out. The hip bruising is very impressive - dinner plate size and VIVID purple.

The hip bruising has faded sufficiently to plan on returning to the gym Sunday morning. Slowly.
I’ve decided to forego the physical therapy sessions for now. Maybe in the new year? I know the exercises I need to do - just need to do them DAILY. The ortho guy was all wishy -washy basically telling me to try therapy but probably expect hip replacement in my future.
I think I can work on this myself and then find a new ortho guy who isn’t bored by dealing with old ladies with bad hips.

That fellow has a very bad attitude, Yooly. They should be telling you the opposite :) that if you just keep investing in them you can avoid surgery! (true or not - that is the kind of attitude they should have.)

Went to the gym this morning and it wasn’t fun. It’s amazing how quickly your endurance disappears after 4 weeks off.

Gym again tomorrow. I’m doing alternate days with the therapy exercises at home. Not looking forward to it. Tylenol helps though!

Neither!! I’m a lazy slug and would happily just sit around reading. The gym requires car trip, dressing, socks and shoes......The therapy exercises are done at home in my jammies but right now it’s painful and causes hard cramps.

But it’s got to get done if I want to stay mobile πŸ₯΄
