Ugh!!...today was a bad run day. Thank goodness they don't happen often and I'm going to expect a fantastic run on Monday.
I ran 5K today but in 2 portions and 3 minutes longer than usual. It felt like I really worked hard. Just one of those days. Monday will be great.0 -
Stay safe Atlanta friends!!
You got it, Petra...the next one will be great. It always is after a sucky one!
Don't worry, Romy. My first couple of runs after my leg business were pretty sluggish, but then things picked up. Try a couple of quick mile intervals to perk up your pace. It's working for me. A good flat run day after a session or two with hills also always seems to help me pick up the pace. It is the most fabulous thing that you did with your kids! Are any of them keeping with it now that they completed the program?
Tim, your toe joint, huh? I went to the podiatrist for a hurting toe last October. He cut out an in-grown nail (which I know was NOT the problem, because I've had in-grown nails on that toe my whole life and cut them out regularly myself). My pain kind of wrapped around the inside of my big toe to below the inside base of my nail right in the joint. I went back 2 weeks later and it still hurt, so he put me on a round of antibiotics, saying the next stop would be to x-ray it. It continued to hurt. Then all my leg procedures started and I was forced to lay off running and take Ibuprofen regularly along with a homeopathic pain medication/anti-bruise medication called Arnica. Lo and behold, it stopped hurting. So far so good. I think it was a stress fracture. I have a feeling the medicine prescribed for my vein health, helped the toe problem. I ordinarily resist taking anything at all costs. I wonder if yours could be a similar situation?
Tonight's run was great! My daughter and son went to the Y with me (after I unexpectedly had to work all day). Boo hiss...to the work. YAY! To kids that still wanted to go to the Y after 8pm! My daughter went to the stepper, my son ran the track doing W1D1 of C25K. I was timing our laps and we were right around a 10 min per mile pace during the run portions. He did great! Then I added a straight running mile for me, while he walked. I ran right around a 10:15 mile. Then we walked to finish 3 miles total. I am one happy mama! ;-)
Madmiss, you do have good friends!!! Nice gifts! Oh, and those great times are on the indoor track...so kinda cheating. LOL! Glad to hear that you are on the mend.0 -
10:36 is bad *kitten*.
This.
This X3. She always was a speedster though, even during C25k.
i won't be happy until I can run a 30 minute 5k! But thanks!0 -
I did my first 10k race yesterday. A lot of people were joking around that it should be called the Puddle Dash or the Polar Splash rather than the Polar Dash. The temps in Chicago warmed up quite a bit in the past few days, at race time it was 36 with a wind chill of 27. The plowed snow banks were melting yet because of the snow banks there was no where for the water to drain off. They had a 5k (not timed), a 10k and a 14 mile run. They had to change the course for the 14 mile run Friday overnight as they considered that course impassible. We ran on the bike trail right on the lakefront and with the course being out and back, there was two way traffic some of the time. At one point early on we got diverted to the snow beside the path and the puddle was more like a pond. Since the snow was melting we ended up in the water under the snow and got soaked anyhow. A few places narrowed down to single file with people in front of me slowly picking their way through the least amount of snow. The second half of the race since I was soaked up to my ankles so I didn't bother to try to avoid the puddles. Every time I stepped in a new puddle it was freezing cold water on my feet all over again. The race was more challenging that I counted out and certainly conditions I hadn't run in before. My time (1:31:28) was very slow, but considering that I fell off quite a bit with my December miles, I can't complain too much. Still working on getting back to where I was the beginning of December. It was a crazy race, but I had a blast. I feel empowered each time I conquer something new and challenging.
Forgot to mention that I finally met up with some of the people of the running club. We carpooled to the race. They were so nice to me and very encouraging. All way ahead of me in running, 7 of them are regular marathon runners and 2 that stick with half marathons. I learned a lot from them, just from chatting with them and seeing how they prepare for the race. I can't wait to meet more of them on the Saturday morning runs. Sounds like several of them are gearing up for Boston. I clearly won't be actually running with those guys, but everyone hangs out at the coffee shop afterwards.0 -
I'm back!!!!!!!
Ushered along by such songs on my iPod as "stupid girl" and "madness" I ran a nice, easy mucinex fueled 3 miles without any discernible loss of muscle memory or lung capacity
After 6 long days off I really needed that run. So happy! Hopefully I can ditch the last of this cold over the next few days and get back to running normality!0 -

That's so awesome Rindy! You are a trooper. I could never run in Ice cold puddles let alone race in it- you should be so proud of yourself! All my snowy friends should. that's great about the running group also - it's so nice to have people to encourage you and to talk about and do running with!!!!
Beth - great job with the kids and the y! Way to inspire them
Plexgut - we all have those days, tomorrow is another one and you will kill it!0 -
Rindy - congrats on your first 10K!! That's awesome!!
madmiss - glad you are back running!!
Today my wife & I had a great long run. The sun was shining and it felt really warm in the sun. Part of the park was flooded due to the crapload of rain that came down yesterday. But we still could access 90% of the paths, just had to backtrack a bit since we couldn't complete the main loop. My wife was really happy to hit 10 miles so easily. She's only 2 weeks into her recovery plan and so far so good. We averaged a 9:29 pace and we did it feeling better than last week's run. I guess that's progress! I didn't get a bruise on my leg this time and overall the lower leg feels good right now with just a tiny bit pain. We ran the same park as last week - the one with the huge hill. It was easier this time and I shaved a full 30 seconds off my time to climb that hill (and ran it twice).

This is me going up the beginning of that big hill today. You can't see it in the photo but the trail makes a hard left up there and continues climbing and climbing.

Fells and I ran for an hour today. I had all these plans to do on how I was going to run and what I was going to do, but instead i got home late last night, fell into bed and slept late, got done what i needed to do this morning, and then just went out and ran for an hour so that it got done.0 -
Rindy - wow. Rawr. That sounds like a great race.0

I think I'm in love with gip.is app.0

Tim that hill looks awesome!
Rindy, congrats on your race! The Polar Dash closest to me (Minneapolis) was during the polar vortex, so wimpy me is glad I didn't sign up. Mostly I just didn't want to drive down to Minneapolis for it.
I did run 10K before leaving for Fargo yesterday. Got out early. Ran a different route than last Saturday but had almost an identical time - shaved a few seconds off. My Yaktrax have been a life saver this winter because the roads are slippery enough I wouldn't dare run without the extra traction.0 -
Good Morning!
30 minutes @ 9:17 today for 3.26 miles...0 -

Very nice run!!! Way to start off the day!0 -
Woohoo everyone!!! Sounds like everyone had a nice weekend run. 4 miles to start off my 1/2 training plan today it's so beautiful to wake up and run into the sunrise....
Tim, that's quite a hill! We don't have hills here, it's flatter than flat. Not so easy for hill repeats I have to find a bridge to do them on or something
Glad you make it back safe Laura! Nice run joe! Way to go bts!!!! Sounds like you had a great time also with fells0 -
A few people have mentioned using the gip.is app so I checked it out. I feel like I'm missing something. I setup a plan for half marathon training with my race date in June. The plans seem to all be time based, but it does show the distance based on the pace. Most of the weeks are just under 10 miles for the entire week and the longest run it has me doing is just under 7 miles. That is just over half the distance, I'm not sure how that would prepare me for running 13.1 miles. The main focus seems to be pushing my pace. It has me increase my pace by 20% by mid June, but the miles per week are very low. Is that because pace is so slow to begin with?0
-
I ran at the gym Friday on the indoor track. It was packed with slow people, so I had to keep dodging in and out. Made it 2 miles at a pretty good pace. (Close to 10:00). I got reprimanded for ducking in front of someone in the slow lane. :-( Doesn't matter which lane I'm in, there are slow people I have to pass. Still better than the treadmill, though.
I did sign up for a 6 week "Boomer Boot Camp" class that starts tomorrow.
My running will be limited over the next few months as I prep for the BP MS150 in April. If you're not familiar with that, it's a 2 day bicycle ride from Houston to Austin, TX. I'm getting as much bike time as I can to get ready for that! The weather was great over the weekend and I got rides in both days!0 -

Yes, the runs are time based.. I inputed a time of 25:58 for my 5K time and my half is on May 10th..
I'm in the 3rd week of the build up phase and I had 23 miles in the second week, this week should be 14 miles according to the plan so i think it's a pullback week...
in the 5th week , it shows a 2 hour and 25 minute run for 13.7 miles @ 10:36..but the weekly mileage shows 24 (speedwork is introduced this week)
it looks likes weekly mileage for me ranges from 15 - 35 mile. I am real comfortable with that while training for my first half marathon.
I will agree with you that the weekly mileage seems low. I have only been running for about 6 months now and the bulk of that was C25K, so I am not too knowledgeable, but I feel confident that I can handle this plan, whereas some of the others were quite daunting and except for the long run days, most days I need to spend about 40 minutes or less which is fantastic since time is at a premium.
BTW, it set my time goal of 1 hour and 46 minutes @ 8:06, if it holds true I will be blown away, but it's only 18 weeks, so I am willing to stick it out and see how it goes.
But it does look like the plan is centered around getting faster.0 -
I just inputted a time of 32 minutes for a 5K with same race date of May 10th for a half marathon... the time it set for me was 2 hours and 26 miutes...i chose 4 run days and left it on recommended for intensity.
first week shows 9 miles
longest run time of 2 hours and 10 minutes and looks like it tops out at 20 miles for weekly mileage.
looks like its a FIRST type of plan imo..I could be wrong
your more than welcome to add me on Gip.is if you want to peruse my plan...that goes for Varda as well and anyone else0 -
Rindy - That doesn't seem right at all. I just have it set for my upcoming 5k and the plan it set looks reasonable. All easy runs though. It's not a FIRST plan.0
-
Tim, that looks like a beautiful trail. It must be a fun run.
Glad that you are running again, maddmiss.
Ceci, an indoor track would be fun to run.
Today's run was so much better and felt easier than Saturday's. I ran 6K in 48:49 on the TM.0 -
2 TM miles today in 23:25 with an incline of 1.0. Got my sweat on.0
-
Plex...glad to hear the run was better
Laura...I am always impressed with those who can run on a treadmill...nice run too
40 degrees this morning and a rest day...forecasted 20 degrees tomorrow morning for my run...such is my luck.
I wish I had some running buddies or a club, but nothing in my town and in Joplin, their times are never convienty for me, due to having 3 kids active in after school activities oh and my job requires a lot of my time even when not at the office. So, I'm super jealous of you running club folks.0 -
I had the whole weekend off as I'd done my Saturday run on Friday night. Went out Monday before work for an easy 5k and it felt so much better than my previous run, thought I must have got a better time, but when I checked it was identical to the time I ran on Friday. So it is official, I have got slower! Mind you I did run (I'm using artistic licence here!) up a 1km long, steep hill on the way home, and it nearly killed me! And now I have strained my thigh... Why do we do this? Oh yeah, we love it!0
-
we indeed do love it, Romy! Injuries and all
Come on Joe, you can run in 20 degrees, everyone else is doing it - in snow, up hill both ways, in sleet and freezing rain and puddles even!0 -

Yeah I'm looking forward to Saturday's trail race. It will be 19°F at race time.
Romy - sorry to hear about your strain. I hope it is just a minor one.0 -
Had a nice trail run today with my wife. We ran 3.4 miles very slowly @ 11:35 pace. We took it easy, trying to keep our heart rate low. And it was a bit sloppy from the rain earlier so we couldn't run too fast. Tomorrow night is speedwork!0
-
nice run tim...
i think I'm taking in too much carbs...0
