Chocolate and thumb holes are great motivators! And this is going to be a great lesson in doing your own thing. You are doing great!
They are running at school to raise money for Sport Relief and have to run for 35 minutes, she was the only one in her year to run the full 35 minutes. Her brother also ran the full 35 minutes without stopping. So proud of them, they wouldn't have been able to do that a year ago.
So proud of YOU0 -
Congratulation Tim and your wife! Nice race!
Congratulations Laura on your 9 mile run!
Congratulations Romy on raising two great kids! Just a warning about weigh and your girl. My little sister Jenni (20 years younger than me) came back from school one day at about age 11 in tears because some of the girls were teasing her because she weighed more than they were and was "fat". Jenni had not an ounce of excess fat on her, but she was (still is) very athletic. She played elite football (soccer) from age 6 and on and eventually got a college scholarship for it. She truly was the example of "muscle weighs more than fat". She looked like the other girls, although not spindly, but was faster and stronger, and weighed more. It took a bit to get it through her head that she was not fat whatsoever, but she did finally get it.0 -
Great photo Tim!
Romy it's fantastic that you're raising your kids to be healthy & strong!
I synced my Garmin and one thing I'm really happy about is the fastest mile in my run was my 9th mile (12:47), and my 2nd fastest was my 8th mile (13:10). Average was 13:16.0 -

Ooops - thanks! Wasn't thinking too clearly after yesterday's beerfest.
With the heavy rain and my hangover, I don't think I'll be doing my long run today.0 -

Have friends in town which means copious amounts of beer and food so today was a nice 5 miler yay! Longest I've gone this month as I've been building my base back up. St pattys in savannah is also off the charts - so thankfully I volunteered to drive last night and no hangover! Yay! Congrats Tim and everyone else doing so well!
Laura - make yor own cashew chocolate ness - it would be better for you anyways
So proud of our little group here. Love hearing all about your triumphs and great family values and everyone's ups and downs alike - such character building we all get every day. What a wonderful way that we all live!0 -

Found them at Walgreens!
This is an awesome group. I really look forward to reading everybody's updates.0 -
I found dark chocolate covered craisins! Yum! I have instructed my husband that he must hide them, and only give them to me if I beg. I could eat the whole bag!Yum!Yum!Yum!
Romy- I am just bursting with happiness over your experience with your daughter (and your son). (And yes! Chocolate and thumbholes motivate me too!) It is so wonderful!
Congrats Tim! To you and your wife! :-)
Glad you are getting back to your base, madmiss! :-)
Nice workout, Joe! You make me really feel like a slacker!
Bts! Way to "be the hill"! LOL! That's what my running group and did on way back down during our run last week. So much fun! Endorphins are magic.
I was a slug today. I think I may even call into work tomorrow. Yesterday was fun until it ended in puke. It was the annual Troop 13 downhill ski trip. We had the best time! But two of the boys (including one of my own) started getting sick around 9pm. We had to pull over a few times during the hour long ride home in the car. Skiing was so much easier for me this year. More exhilaration down hills! But I think I over did it. Or I'm fighting the flu. Not sure which. So I took a lesson from my dog, and found a patch of sun to lie in on the rug and I actually took a nap! No joke. The dog looked worried and alarmed at my odd behavior. He nuzzled me and then sat by me on alert until finally he gave in and had a little nap too. No long run today. I feel guilty, sort of...but I just don't have it in me today. I don't' feel like the "baby" of anything! I feel old and crotchety today! LOL!0 -
I'd love to tell you all about my trail run - it was awesomeness times 1000. One small example: women I ended up running with were all discussing the challenges of breastfeeding and balancing being a mom with running. I don't know when I'll have the time though.0

started cross training tonight...
I decided to dip my toe in with an inexpensive set.
Weider X-Factor ST i think it's called, definitely do not have trouble with intensity as far as the cardio part is concerned and I'm a bit skeptical that my heart rate even got very high, but the strength (especially core areas) I could definitely feel. I could keep up (barely) however this is only week 1...it is an 8 week program, and the workouts are 3 times a week, and the other 3 days you can fill in with other cardio or one of 4 supplemental dvds... I will do my regular running and cycle through those other dvds on the cardio days. It's only 60 days, so I'll stick to it and see how it goes. At the very least I should get a very good idea about what direction I want to head for strength training.0 -

Sounds like a fantastic run!
Hope you are feeling better today Beth.
Joe, hope you enjoy your new workout.
Madmiss, glad to see you are getting back into your running, stay healthy.0 -
Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!! I hope y'all have a great day!
Looks like another wet day here, and COLD! But I am getting my long run in no matter what. I'm feeling much better after yesterday's beerfest hangover. And I'm not as achy from the race as I was yesterday. That race was a hard effort - 2.5 miles in 20 minutes. I was hoping to finish under 20 but when I got sight of the finish line the clock was hitting 20 and I passed through 4 seconds later. At the same time another guy my age was coming up fast behind me. I gave it all I could and crossed the timing mat with him right on my heels. That meant the difference between 3rd overall and 1st in age group. My wife was just 30 seconds behind me (she's getting faster!). We both got a huge box of beef jerky from Oberto, one of the sponsors.
This weekend is the Publix Georgia Marathon/Half Marathon. We'll both be running the half and treating this as a training run (not going for a PR).0 -
Terrific runs, Laura (faster at the end!), Varda (sounds like a great trail run!), and Tim (great racing!)
Hope you're feeling better today, Beth. Sounds like fun on skis!
I'd like to hear how the cross traing works for you, Joe.
Sounds like you're doing fine, madmiss
I went to a barnhunt test (actually 4 of them) this weekend with my terriers. Both dogs did well and Fells qualified twice. I worked the test and got some exercise in, but also added a brisk walk on Saturday night and a bit over 2 mile run last night. These both felt so good despite, or maybe because of how stiff I had gotten, after standing/walking all day and then being forced to stay in a car for hours afterward. I'm really glad that I got my longer run in on Friday though, because I really want to run 6+ miles for 3 of every 4 weeks from now on. I'm never going to improve if I don't get the miles in.
Starting tomorrow, for a half hour during my lunch hour, every Tuesday and Thursday for 4 weeks, I'm going to a workout called RunSmart at my work's gym that the health department has put together. We'll see how it goes, but I'm hopeful that it'll be fun.0 -
I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!
Saturday, I helped out at a local Middle School duathlon. It was run 1/4 mi, ride 1/2 mi, run 1/4 mi. The kids had a blast and so did I! I did the course twice, finishing in 8:17 the second time. (Timer didn't work the first time!) Those kids are fast runners! I pretty easily passed them up on the bike, but they flew by me running! I think having an adult do it with them made them even faster. The best time of the day was one of the kids who really kicked it into high gear when I passed him on the bike. (He also won a sportsmanship award. After he finished his race, he went back out on the course to encourage the other kids to keep going!) It is great to see the schools encouraging kids to get out and get active. This school has about 2 dozen bikes they use during PE. They are planning a duathlon competition between all four middle schools in the district.
After finishing that, I rode 20 miles with the girls biking group and then 30 more with my friend who is doing the MS 150 with me. It was a great day!
Sunday started out with rain, which changed to sleet, then snow and the temps dropped throughout the day, so I rested! Today it will be back in the upper 50's!0 -
This stupid cold still isn't gone. Last Thursday I missed my run cuz the cold was in my chest and left me wheezing just going up the stairs. Saturday I had the Get Lucky 7k in Chicago. I had already paid for the race and wanted my medal. Two or three minutes in I started in with the wheezing and hacking and knew I had to slow down. My sister was there as well, it was her week 9 day 2 in C25K. I decided I would stick with her and help push her along. She needed a couple of walking breaks after her 30 minutes was done, but did end up running most of the 4.3 miles. She hit an overall pace almost a minute faster than she has ever done and now has a whole new confidence about her running.
Pushing today's run back to tomorrow because it's supposed to be another 20 degrees warmer. Today this cold is no longer in my chest, just my sinuses now. Hoping it's completely gone soon. This is the 3rd bad cold of the winter. I can't remember the last time I've had more than one cold in a winter. At least my kids aren't getting sick.0 -
You can tell when spring is in the air based on the posts to this group!
Great job, Rindy! Love how you came up with a fall-back strategy to meet your goal without damaging yourself.0 -
That duathalon sounded like a great time0

Just got back from doing 9 miles out on the greenway. It was just me & lots of deer out there. I have never seen so many deer on the greenway. And bluebirds everywhere! Even had a big hawk swoop down right in front of me. I didn't mind the 41°F temps and light rain - I was just enjoying nature for a while.0

love the wildlife on the trails.
24 minute easy run tonight
cardio day in the x factor st program-- so i counted my normal running but also did the supplemental ab workout dvd and holy crikes!
I have weak abs i guess...0 -
I have weak abs i guess...
I may be a very slow runner, but after 14 months of Pilates I have really strong abs.
One of my other MFP friends is in week 2 of the plan you're doing, Joe.
Rindy I hope you can get rid of your cold soon!
14 of 17 people in my family have the stomach flu. I'm one of the last 3 standing. I spent Friday night with all of them. I am willing myself not to get sick. *fingers crossed0 -

I've been MIA for a couple of weeks. I've been having some sore and disappointing runs but I've been running.
Today's run was amazing. I felt great, ran well, no soreness and went the entire distance without pausing. The sun was shining and the air was cool. It felt really good.
My step-dad was visiting over the weekend. He's a walker and we walked around a lake ( http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=burnaby+lake&FORM=HDRSC2 ). The trail there is really good and I could swing by there on my way home from work. I think I may try changing at work and going there for a run or two. It would be so pretty and exhilarating.
I haven't caught up on everyone's progress yet but I will.0 -

50,000 mg of Vitamin D3 for 3 days, then 5,000 mg a day for a week. (Recommended to me by my cousin the Nurse Practitioner.) Seemed to help me avoid the flu when my DH brought it home from work.
Good luck! Hope you don't succumb!0 -

Sorry that you've been so sore. Glad you had a nice run, yesterday! That is a pretty area.
I'm so looking forward to running when the sky isn't grey and there isn't snow on the ground. Of course, then I'll complain about the heat.0 -
I feel like such a sloth!0

Nice trail run Joe!!
Today is supposed to be my track workout but I am doing strength training instead. Got some pain around my hip & IT band and decided that missing a couple of runs this week is no big deal. I'll be seeing the therapist on Friday and hopefully she can loosen things up before Sunday's half. And she'll be able to feel if anything is strained in case I need to sit out the race.0
