Numbers may not show it, but leaf season is kicking my bum. Oak mites are bad, then strained my back throwing 40 gal tubs of wet leaves into the dump bed of the truck, and the truck just lost a cylinder on the way back to the shop.

    Not looking forward to today.

Roughly half a day working to finish off the weekly list of mows/leaf cleanups.

Leaf cleanups really slowed us down this week as warmer than normal temps have kept grass growing but shorter days (and some rain) have caused about a third to half the leaves to drop. Expecting next week to be better as temps are closer to normal (highs low 60s, lows low 40s) and weather drier.

Back is much better after straining it Wednesday tossing 40 gal tubs of wet leaves into the back of the truck. Hard for me to wait for help tossing heavy awkward tubs. Anywhere from 75 to 150 lbs (or more) depending on wetness of grass/leaves. (40 gal of nothing but water would weigh 340 lbs.)

Pulled valve cover off my main truck and found (a little) good news. The top ball on the push rod on #5 exhaust had broken off, leaving it a 1/4" too short. Our thinking now is that a new hydraulic lifter, push rod, and rocker arm will put it back into service (while crossing fingers that camshaft is OK). Parts should be in next Tuesday.

If issue is worn lob on camshaft chances are it will eat the push rod again and then the engine will need at least a partial overhaul. Just hoping this cheap fix will last to the end of leaf season.

In the mean time, my backup truck is a red '93 Isuzu cab-over 4 cylinder diesel flat bed with 2 ft wood sides named after Clifford, the big red dog. And dog it is. Top speed, empty, down hill with a tail wind is maybe 65 mph. On the flat, pulling my mowing trailer loaded with grass and leaves its about 50 mph (given time). Up hill it drops to 25 mph. If the hill is steep, 15 mph.

Leaf cleanups are kicking me in the bum. Actually back, shoulders, and arms, to be more exact. Numbers are down but aches and pains are up from tossing 50 to 100 lb tubs of leaves (weight depending on moister content) up into the truck all day. Had to make a trip back to the shop over lunch break to dump the truck so would have room for the rest of the day. Worked until too dark to see.

Tired to the point of exhaustion. Pushed to get through all of our yards last week. With leaf cleanups, this takes roughly twice as long as a normal mow. Reason for push is we only have three working days this week (4 day Thanksgiving weekend) so only have time to hit 60% of our clients. (We'll get most the residentials and skip all the commercials)

    Add to that push:
    1. Warmer than normal weather means that grass is still growing under a layer of leaves making bagger tubs that much heavier.
    2. My regular truck partner has been re-tasked to blow out irrigation systems these last two weeks and my replacement partner is in his first 6 months with this industry.
    3. 40 mph wind gusts coming from every direction makes leaf cleanups on par with herding cats. Finish a yard and the area you started with is covered in leaves again.
    4. Dry weather finally has arrived... which just makes for clouds of dust on some yards. Been so thick at time I've had to shut down the blades and wait for the wind to blow the dust cloud away or risk hitting something.
    5. Oak mites. Actually some good news there. Last year was the first big year for these immigrants in our area and a bite would itch for 7-10 days. This year, maybe, they aren't as numerous (maybe, stopped counting once I hit 50 bites in one day) but the good news is that I seem to be developing a tolerance to the neural venom. They only itch for a day or two.

Weather is cooler this week, my experienced truck partner is back, wind is down to 5-10 mph, and a good freeze over the weekend should have knocked out the oak mites.

I keep saying two more weeks and now I mean it. Looks like weather will only allow two days of leaf cleanups next week (Monday and Tuesday), which then leaves another week (weather permitting) before Christmas. We should then get 10 days off for Christmas and New Years.

Currently have three small engines to rebuild this winter. Actually one is just installing a new engine onto the mower. The second will be assembling from a new short block. Still have to tear into the third to see what it needs.

I also need to catch up on my wood pile this winter. Main source of heat at home is wood and I didn't get much done last winter. I'm down to three cords of seasoned wood (primarily oak) stacked and ready to burn. Might get me through this winter since I've added propane to my heating options. (Been known to burn 7 to 8 cords before adding propane), but I'd like to have next year's and a bit more ready to go by Spring.

Use to have 9 cords stacked and seasoned but have fallen behind since getting this manual labor job after retiring from my old laboratory job back in March of 2015. Didn't get much cut last winter.

Got the new engine installed onto the first mower (48" Xmark walk-behind) and it is back in service.

Second blown engine off mower (60" Xmark zero-turn rider) and now disassembled on my basement workbench. Autopsy shows the head of #1 exhaust valve broke off, jammed piston causing hole in piston and broken connecting rod. As engine spun down, flailing end of broken rod knocked three holes in block which also destroyed starter.

    syirp8p0lwhr.jpg

This one will need a new short block, a new #1 head, and a new starter. (Still cheaper than new engine.)

Third engine also off mower (60" Dixie zero-turn rider) and sitting on my workbench waiting its turn.

    ---

Eating has totally gotten out of control. Starting weight 1/1/16 was 214 lbs. Lowest weight in September was 181 lbs, a 33 lb loss. Current weight 206 lbs. [*kittens*]

I do plan getting back into healthier patterns, including my off-season workouts, after Christmas.

I can lose the weight again, no worries. If anyone has ideas on how to keep it off, particularly after exhaustion has set in after the heat of the Summer busy season, I'm all ears. I'd really like to break the lose/gain yearly cycle.

Yup. Eve only offered Adam an apple. My wife offers wine, chocolate, homemade Christmas cake, homemade Christmas pudding... and she 'tidies away' my weights every chance she gets. It takes an extra 10 minutes to set up the training area ( living room) and clear it every day ☺

I'm fortunate to have a three bay basement garage/workshop. I've used to have one bay for nothing but exercise. Even had one inch foam mats down for martial arts workouts. But my daughter got her license and needed the space for her car. I still have room for my treadmill and weights. Just need motivation to start using them again.

Hope everyone is having a good Christmas.

Mine has been sort of yin/yang. Weight is holding steady if not dropping a bit / but reason for that is nasty stomach flu and head cold I picked up last Wednesday night. Worked through it Thursday, but lucked out Friday as rain cancelled work so I didn't have to call in sick.

Cough and head congestion. Eating nothing but a little rice and a couple of crackers. No nausea, but not straying far from a bathroom, if you get my drift. Fortunately we are well stocked with TP.

Staying home (alone) while family enjoys the Holidays out with the relatives.

Stomach bug over and head cold down to coughing up lung cookies and snorting out some gummy crap from the sinuses.

Back to work. Uncharacteristically warm for Jan and we are back to doing... wait for it... more leaf cleanups!

Good that you made it through the virus. My wife is flat out with the flu and elder son had it for a week in December - my turn next... starting with the sneezes, aches and shivers. Had great plans about kick starting my exercises, but I usually wait until the wife and kids are back to work/uni/school and everyone is back in their ruts. So this week will be just dog walking and calorie counting.
Looking forward to an interesting year here in Ireland with the knock on impact of Brexit.

So first week of 2017 was pretty much a misfire as far as my workouts go.

    Wed 01/04 - TDEE: 2,395 cals, Steps: 4,529 , Active Minutes: 0
    Thu 01/05 - TDEE: 2,081 cals, Steps: 1,591 , Active Minutes: 0

    Sat 01/07 - TDEE: 2,294 cals, Steps: 2,760 , Active Minutes: 0

Managed to finally get one in Sunday.

    Sun 01/08 - TDEE: 2,638 cals, Steps: 8,499 , Active Minutes: 44

10K app W2D1 and half of D2 combined
    • normal 5 minute warm-up
    • D1 - 21 min - 6 sets, 90 second jog @ 5 mph, 2 minute walk @ 3.5 mph
    • D2 - 10.5 min - 3 sets, 90 second jog @ 5 mph, 2 minute walk @ 3.5 mph
    • normal 5 minute cool-down

    FITBIT CHARGE HR STATS
    • 48 minutes total,
    • 44 active minutes,
    • 424 cals,
    • 5,036 steps,
    • 2.67 miles.

    • 0 minutes in peak zone (>160 bpm),
    • 8 minutes in cardio zone (130 - 160, peak HR 145 bpm),
    • 38 minutes in fat burn zone (95 - 130),
    • and the rest out of zone (<95 bpm).

Had planned on combining all three days of Week 2 together but last run (W1D1,2,and 3 for 80 minutes) was on 11/8/16 and leaf cleanups aren't much of a leg workout. Then add to that being mostly flat on my back with a head cold the last two weeks... ankles, shins, knees and quads all screaming at me and coughing up lung cookies after only 40 minutes.

Still, all-in-all, felt good to get moving again.

Sabotaged myself. Started at lunch. Leftover pizza, 3 slices just what the doctor ordered, but wait... there are 4 slices... can't leave just one.

Goes downhill from there. roughly 2,000 cals over. Good news is that I logged them all.
  • Pizza and chicken wings. Always my downfall.
