Sorry to hear about your hip Romy. Sounds like what I was going through about 8 months ago. I could barely lift my leg up to put my pants on. By the time I went to a therapist more than a month later, she found lesions on the hip flexors, the psoas, and the adductor. All evidence of a strain. The active release therapy really helped me get through that, along with rest. Definitely get that checked out soon!

I just got home from a 12-mile train run. It was brutal with all the big hills but I can't wait to do it again! I ran very slow and this turned out to be my longest run ever by length of time on my feet (2:33). And the most calories burned ever: 1461. The last mile was so hard - everything ached from my thighs down. I guess I don't need to do legs at the gym tomorrow. I already had enough strength training today!! Now I need to eat, a lot.

Laura, its at the front of my thigh just below the crease of my hip so I don't think it's my it band.

Tim, I know what you mean about putting on pants! I have to sit down to get dressed as it's too painful to lift my leg. Great run! I couldn't even imagine doing a 2:33 training run although I would like to have those extra calories to eat.

Yeah I just finished off a huge bowl of spicy Korean pork & noodles. If that didn't make up the calories I burned running then it had to come pretty close! Now I just need another 2000 calories to maintain!

I'm having a day off today, the only exercise I'll be doing is walking my dog. The front of my thigh has been sore for a few weeks when I run and I've had an ache in my hip, just assumed it was a thigh strain. But since my awful run in the Saucony's on Wednesday my hip has been really painful. When I lift my thigh I get a stabbing pain in my hip and turning it certains ways is really sore. I ran 5k on Friday and 4k yesterday because when I run it's just the front of my thigh that is sore, not my hip, but the pain in my hip is getting worse. If it's still as sore tomorrow I'm going to make a doctor's appointment as when I googled it it was quite scary!

I'm typing this on my husband's laptop, I normally use my tablet and I keep waiting for predictive texting to bring up the word I'm typing, and for it to automatically use a capital letter at the start of a sentence, it's made me so lazy!!

Check out the Katy Says blog. I haven't read anything specifically about this, but her Biomechanics exercises seem to solve multiple problems that aren't specifically targeted.

was feeling pretty good for my final 2 minutes so pulled up the metronome app on my phone and decided to try to run at a cadence of 180 which turns out to be significantly faster than I run.

One day you'll be able to run more slowly at a higher cadence. I really love the Martin Yelling podcast that teaches you how to run different cadences - especially for treadmill workouts.

Thanks varda, I'm having a week off and will have a look at her exercises.

I have to figure out podcasts (what they are and how to access them) because I keep reading about them. Is that something I can download on my phone? (I've got an iPhone.)

Yes. You can access them through the iTunes store.

For those of you who have had problems with your foot shifting forward or your shoes not holding your heel in place, you might want to check out Under Armour's new shoe, Apollo. While I'm not hugely impressed by it's looks or padding, what it does have is less inside to rub against your foot and a better cradle for the heel to stop it shifting where you'd rather it not shift. Although, since I don't have the second problem (I have had the first), I can't truly judge the shoe for it's effectiveness on that point. It really should fix it though.

Has anyone tried the Brooks Transcend? They were giving a pair away at the seminar I went to on Saturday (which unfortunately I didn't win) but they sounded cool.

I had the best run tonight. 4 miles with my RunRev group at an easy 11:40 pace. So. Much. Fun! I forgot what it feels like to run with other people. Tonight I got to set the pace. It was relaxed, so I had a chance to chat with my fellow runners on topics ranging from families to running gear. It made running so much easier even with a steep hill thrown in. The pre-run speaker was incredible! He is a Sports and Integrative Medicine Specialist and a Clinical Professor of Sports Medicine. He had all kids of fun facts and helpful tips. Including info on anti-inflammatory foods. Very interesting!

My heart is full. This organization is top-notch. I can't believe it is in my little town AND I'm helping it happen. I am richly blessed! I can't wait until next week!!!

Editing this to say...If you haven't found a running group to join (many of us have), then join one!

After a few weeks of no running due to a nasty cold and issues with my SI joint again, I finally got to run today. Doc cleared me to run even though I'm on pain pills/muscle relaxers for another week. I have a bunch of exercises the physical therapist gave me for my lower back that I have to do twice a day.

I still don't like the treadmill, but it I got home from work with not enough daylight for an outdoor run. Unfortunately my running this winter hasn't been very consistent. I did a slow 3 miles and had to take a walking break in the middle. I figure it's going to take me a while to get back to where I was. I'm thrilled that the 10 day forecast is all 20s and 30s and with the time change this weekend, I'll have more time to get an outdoor run in after work. It's all about the little things in life

Last night was a big Fat Tuesday event put on by the local running store. Lots of shoes to test drive from Adidas, ASICS, Brooks, Hoka, Mizuno, New Balance, Nike, and Saucony. I tried on shoes from everyone except Nike & ASICS (neither have fit me well in the past). I liked the Saucony Guide 7 when I did a short 1/4 mile run in them. I really loved the Adidas Boost 2 but I can't wear those - I need some mild pronation control. I'll need to wait a few months when Adidas has a pronation control shoe with Boost foam.

We enjoyed some King Cake and ice-cold beer, which just made me feel colder since it was only 40°F when the event started and dropped from there. They had all shoes at 20% off and my wife ended up getting the Adidas Boost 2 while I got a pair of the Brooks Ravenna 5. I currently run in the Ravenna 4 and the 5's feel even better. I just hit 200 miles in the 4's so they still have 2-3 months of life in them. The 5's should get me through the summer as my long runs get longer.

You'll get back into it faster than you expect. Just take it slow, let yourself have the walking breaks and ease into it. I totally messed myself up last summer and gave myself form issues by pushing it. You are a runner. You will run. It'll meet you half-way.
