I'm rowing this afternoon-hoping to get into a more serious routine now that I'm feeling pretty well healed.

Made it to the gym three days this week for the first time since the end of November. My wrist is doing well. Still a bit of pain on movement and swelling but soooo much better.2

Gym tomorrow morning. Iβd prefer not to go on Sundays but, then again, when youβre old and retired EVERY day is Saturday or Sunday. π₯³2

You do just fine doing your long dog walks, PAV. Iβd be walking outdoors too if I could tolerate the uneven surfaces better. And the hazards of branches, slippery surfaces, tarantulas, skunks, armadillos, deer, snakes, broken sidewalks β¦β¦But sometimes you just make concessions to age.

-branches -- check (crack! Ouch)
-slippery surfaces -- oh yes check (ouch ouch)... lately I've been more into "involuntary unexpected lie downs" as opposed to ouch mind you!
-skunks -- check! (no ouch really... but the aftermath is somewhat traumatic for a while)
-deer -- check, I guess, and often... but I don't recall a non vehicular collision? And I generally yield to them to cross the road, though I've encountered a couple with death wishes and a willingness to make leaps of faith!
-snakes -- well, thankfully, it appears most of the ones around here are non poisonous. But I can guarantee that they don't do anything good to my heart rate or blood pressure.
-- can't say I've run into tarantulas or armadillos though I did have a couple of what MUST be spiderbites.
Hmm... it's starting to sound scary out there!

Went back to the gym for the first time in many many weeks. It was rough but it was good. I am glad I went and stuck it out. I feel great and can't wait to go again tomorrow. Starting back kinda sucks but the pay off is nice.3

Do you try to go to the gym everyday Scout? Iβve put myself on a three times a week schedule because I find I need an in-between rest day. Of course Iβm wayyyyy older than you and have creaky bones and muscles that donβt snap back quickly.1

Gym this morning. It was fairly pleasant- except for the sweaty stuff. The New Year resolutions people have given up for the most part. So there were no bored, exhausted people sitting on the machines texting or staring at their phones when they should do their reps and move on.1

I am slowly getting back into exercise. Still dealing with fatigue issues and breathing problems so keeping it nice and slow. I am borrowing an exercise bike from my apartments maintenance person (someone left it when they moved out) to see if I like it before I buy one. I do enjoy using it a lot, but I can only do like 10 mins on it before my legs decide to say no more. Hopefully I can work that number up over time.2

I'm loving my exercise routine. I try to get to the gym 5 days a week. Usually Elliptical 3 days a week, legs 1 day, and upper body 1 day.
Today was upper body and I tried a couple of different machines. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.2 -

Are you doing it to be more able to do something in bad weather?
I admit to making the mistake of buying the coat hanger when I was at a location that's a bit cold to go for walks at times; but when I'm at a location that such is possible a coat hanger it is!
Plus coat hanger was good exercise (different muscles/intensity I guess). But definitely less total time/calories and more impactful on rest of day. Then again I never progressed past the intro stage on it, so there's that!2 -
I miss my walking outdoors. The weather here is generally good in winter and doable early mornings even in the hot summer. However, concessions must be made to age and safety! And my arthritis. I didnβt do anything for two months while I had my wrist cast - doctors orders. He didnβt want me risking another fall or further injury. Iβm certainly not frail but definitely clumsy!
My gym membership is free from my retirement benefits. I have a choice of several gym chains. So going to the gym is not motivated by wasting money on unused fees. Usually I feel better after going but not so much while Iβm there.
I go at least three times a week because otherwise Iβd be a slug - happily sitting in a recliner reading or knitting. And hubby is a devout exerciser so he insists I join him at the gym. Wish he felt that togetherness when Iβm vacuuming, scrubbing floors or doing laundry!2 -

Oh hubby helps out but on his own schedule. Unless I ask, heβd be happy to let things go for months. Iβm the clean freak. I cut him some slack because he does most of the cooking and grocery shopping (but thatβs a whole other story!).
Weβve been married nearly 50 years so I guess itβs working okay. π2 -
I've only used the rowing machine once this year β¦ I was so dismayed by how incredibly out of shape I am I've avoided it.
I've been rearranging some things in the house and cleaning and vacuuming and one carpet was beyond rescue so it just went out in the garbage and that necessitated juggling of other carpets to the higher carpet priority rooms and everything that comes along with that and I can't believe how ready I am for bed at night despite the afternoon lie downs.
This year has taken a lot of my steam away. I know it'll come back ... but ... but ... I don't like it. (she says like a two year old)
It's only 10 AM and the very thought of rowing makes me want to go back to bed π π1 -

It is NOT EASY to get back in a routine once you're out.
Especially as we get older.
The first few "sessions" whatever ARE harder.
Remember the little PAV back at 48 trying to come up with SOMETHING ANYTHING and concluding that trying for too much is the enemy of DOING SOMETHING. All I'm going to try for is to at least walk around a bit more than from couch to bed to couch.
Moving carpets is DOING SOMETHING. Taking your girl out is DOING SOMETHING. AND YOU DID IT.
Moving the rowing machine out from under the bed is DOING SOMETHING even if you don't get to climb in it. AND YOU DID IT
You've had surgeries and "cough cough" some weight reversal.
Of course you are feeling it.
*kittens* Laurie: a couple of months back I was looking at the slope of the dog walk and muttering how the bleep did I use to scamper up this *kitten* and I've been dealing with less than 10lbs and a pretty *kitten* minor surgical boo boo comparatively.
But, you know the drill: just grab a 4L jug of water and lug it around all day and tell me how happy you are, right?
One day 10 seconds.
The next day 15 seconds
The next day 20 seconds
and up it goes
And if rowing doesn't hit the buttons... choose something else! Including tactical shopping!2 -
Thank you, PAV. Now I'm in a tizzy - am fighting the urge to go do some very nontactical shopping - now I'm almost tempted to pull down that rowing maching (it is a big beast - doesn't fit under the bed but leans up against the wall pretty nicely.
Maybe if I row sufficiently (at all ) I can walk down to the store and pick up a treat of sorts. That seems a reasonable goal? And I do have calorie space if I employ some moderation. And perhaps if I row I won't feel like going for the treat? Hmmm...

Tactical shopping involves walking to the store (mine is only 8 minutes down and another 8 up the hill so minimum 20 minute turn around and probably a bit more)
Picking up a jug of milk and walking back.
Then repeating and coming back with jello pudding powder
Then making the pudding manually.... eating it
Then repeating trip for the next pudding box!!!!π΅βπ«π€£2 -
No proper tactical shopping yet - but I did row for 12 minutes π and I'm pondering walking to the grocery store to pick up some honey flavoured Greek yoghurt smoothie bars!

I'm setting myself the modest goal of three sessions of intentional activity each week, on top of my usual daily dog walking. So if I do an extra-long dog walk, or a second walk, that counts towards the target. Ditto a session at the allotment or in the garden at home. Ditto energetic housework etc. etc.
Monday - nada (just the dog walking)
Tuesday - 70 minutes on Zwift (35kms)2 -

Yes! I'm now the proud owner of my very own bouncing baby allotment!
It's not very big (just about 70m2 of growing space) but last year I grew beetroots, leeks, carrots, onions, rainbow chard, fennel, potatoes, lettuce, rocket, tomatoes, spinach, spaghetti squash, patty pan, courgettes, dwarf green beans, strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries. And a ton of culinary herbs like parsley, basil, mint, thyme, rosemary, sage etc.
And I bartered for apples, rhubarb, blackberries, cabbage, walnuts, garlic, redcurrants, chillis, bell peppers and runner beans.
Apart from citrus fruits, I literally haven't had to buy any fruit or veg for 10 months - the freezer is now looking a little empty, but hopefully I still have enough stuff frozen, pickled and preserved to keep me going until the end of the 'hunger gap' and the spring harvest.
This year I'm growing everything I grew last year, and I'm also adding garlic, chillis, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, savoy cabbage, cauliflower, cavolo nero and rhubarb.
That's if it ever stops raining....
