Returning to competition
One of my goals this year is to go to a tournament as a competitor. I haven't been inside the ring other than as an official in 20 years. I just got a flyer today that the next tournament in my area is on 9/16. Suddenly nervous.

Opinions wanted: Time for a new board?
This board was started long ago (2011) by a user that no longer exists in MFP, and has 2 moderators, who haven't logged in since 2016 and 2014, and who have deleted their main MFP accounts as well. I tried contacting support to see if we can get the ownership of a board changed or at least add some active moderators, but…

What is "Hard" - What is "Soft"
Hey everyone, I recently got into a great discussion with a long time BJJ practitioner on what constitutes "Hard" vs. "Soft" styles, and the relationship therein to each other - i.e. what are the key differences, and what, if any, are the crossovers between styles. So.. from your perspective - what is the difference?

Meal timing - finding the energy.
Do you have an eating plan that is geared around your training schedule? Losing weight while learning Martial arts presents an interesting challenge - energy requirements! I personally find that training on an empty stomach is a quick trip to "out of gas", that my stamina is very poor, and my performance suffers,…

Bruce Lee fight video
Hey everyone - not sure if you've seen this yet.. so thought I'd share. Demonstration sparring match between Bruce Lee and one of his students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_6q574Es7c Amazing speed and timing to be seen here - and a great example of the dominant hand forward fighting style that is the hallmark of JKD.…

Starting a TaeKwonDo class?
A new dance studio is opening up and they asked me to start a TKD class. I am a 2nd degree black belt and have taught many times at the school that I studied in but starting from scratch is going to be new to me. Any suggestions?

Training - what works?
What are you doing outside of classes for training? Is your focus mainly on fitness, forms, basics or ..?

What art(s) would you be doing if you had to swtich?
I"m already on my second choice (BJJ) for lack of Judo in Gainesville. I really really like it, don't get me wrong, but I am in love with Judo. That said, if I had all the arts available to me and had to make a switch? 1 - Freestyle Wrestling 2 - Sanshou 3 - Kyokushin Karate How about all of you? What's always intrigued…

Gloves - Opinions please
Good morning! I am picking up a new pair of gloves for Muay Thai and am wondering if anyone has an opinion on any particular brand? Right now I have a great pair of Venum, they are vicious! I love them but they're starting to suffer a little wear and tear. I am looking for something a little more compact. I need to stick…

How does the rainbow run
When I was first training martial arts in the '80's the school I was at had 4 colors of belt: white, green, brown, and black with tape stripes used to denote the in-between steps from 1st through 9th kyu The belt system for the school I am currently training at goes: white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, high-blue, green,…

Is MMA a good way to lose weight and gain muscle? Can we expect good results?
Hi, Well to cut to the chase, my partner and I have become slobs, and are fed up of our weights yo-yoing, so both of us have been looking into a sport we could do together which hopefully will be sustainable and help us keep the weight off long term doing something we enjoy. We both have gym memberships already, but…

What MA and rank are you?
I see there are alot of members in this group (which is great!) but i'm just curious as to what art you practice (unless you take boxing, Muay Thai or kickboxing) and what rank you are. I'm currently a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, and hope to test for my blue belt at the end of November, along with my son.

Water Cooler Chat
There seem to be a reasonable number of Martial Arts Practitioners currently using MFP to track our fitness goals. While a number of us have become MFP friends, I thought it might be fun to start chatting back and forth through the group as well as through our activity feeds. So I am starting this thread to see if any of…

HRM/Fitness Trackers
Hello all, I was wondering if any of you wear a fitness tracker during your practices. I study Judo and was considering getting a wearable fitness tracker, but I'm not sure of which one to get. It just seems like the default "Judo, tkd, kickboxing" isn't very accurate when I record my exercise. Recommendations would be…

Strength vs Cardio training
I've been thinking a lot about what my fitness goals are in relation to my MA performance lately. I want to improve my cardio endurance (mine is OK, but not great), as well as strength. I'm wondering though, how does everyone balance the strength training vs. Cardio training? If we listen to the lifting crowd, most of them…

You're experience with one of the 'Greats' of your MA
I am overjoyed that this weekend I get to attend an hours-long Brazilian Jiu Jitsu workshop this Saturday at my home gym, taught by world-champion Pablo Popovitch. Dude is an absolute beast, and I am looking forward to getting tapped over and over again, probably while he's checking his emails and having casual…

Where does your training take place?
Very large dojo, small dojo with a few loyal students, local gym, back yard with a few old training partners? I have had a sampling of a few different settings. Tell me about yours. What do you love about it? What settings have you experienced and loved or hated?

Hi! I'm just starting out in MMA. I've been doing powerlifting. What are your thoughts on continuing powerlifting while training MMA? Good/bad idea? Do they compliment each other or detract from one another?
