MMA Fighters
So I know we have lots of TKD, Karate, and other far east disciplines here. Anyone else a mixed martial artist? Do you actively fight (not in a gym setting, at sanctioned events)? What's your weight class? Background? I'm a 1-1 amateur, coming off an 18month fighting hiatus (by circumstance, not necessarily choice). Last…

How sore is too sore?
I had a super rough MT class yesterday, and got the living crap kicked in my leg (right outer calf). I'm not bruised, but it hurts to walk, a little swollen, and feels like a bad ass leg cramp. I'm not worried about it, but when you do get kicked like that, do you push through your work outs the following day , or give it…

Strength Training in Addition to Martial Arts?
This may sound like an odd question and I've asked in a couple of different forums without getting any specific answers. I lifted for strength on the StrongLifts program for the past year. This program requires lifting three days/week and they highly recommend not doing any activities on days off. I've taken up krav maga…

Heavy Bag Training Questions?
So I got my bag Saturday, and won't have a chance to ask my trainer any questions until this Saturday, so maybe you guys can help. When doing a heavy bag workout, are you supposed to wear wraps under your gloves? I have 12oz gloves, and was curious if I needed to wrap my wrists also? We don't wear wraps in class, but we…

Stretches
What are your favourite stretches to do, to improve flexibility , balance & strength? Also do you need to do a brief warmup beforehand? For those who sit alot during the day at work, are there any stretches that can be done that you don't need much of a warm up for ? thanks !

Punching bag for Muay Thai
I am looking to get a punching bag this weekend for Muay Thai. Does anyone have any recommendations as to brand or size? I think i will go with a "banana bag" instead of the standard punching bag, but I imagine there is more to it than that...? thanks!

How did I catch an elbow to my forearm?
My arm is killing my today. I do traditional boxing. I was sparring yesterday. I must have been throwing a shovel hook. I don't know how it happened, but I slammed the muscle running over my forearm into my opponent's left elbow. I jumped around for a bit cursing, then forgot about it for the rest of my workout. My…

Muay Thai Vs Kyokushin Karate
I am really interested in martial arts for its physical and mental benefits. I do have about 50lbs to lose and have struggled with staying committed to the gym. I think the community aspect of martial arts and the discipline will be helpful, plus it can be something that I can be committed to on the long term. Now with…

Cleaning smelly pads and gloves!
Does anyone have any tips for cleaning smelly focus pads and gloves? I bought my own pads so that I didn't have to use the clubs smelly pads, but 9 months down the line they're starting to smell just as bad! I bought some 'fresh gloves', little yellow bags of charcoal to put in gloves while you're not wearing them but to…

kettlebells
Hi everyone-- I want to add kettlebells to my workout to change up my routine. I go to a gym that has a variety of sizes, but I have never used them. I see some guys using them sometimes, but it's rare. Most of the time they just sit there unused. Anyone have any recommended workouts, tips, etc, they would like to pass…

I found a gym offering this particular style of martial art.....and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about it. Is it basically a mix of judo and jiu jitsu? I think I'm going to try it out tomorrow and see if I like it.

I'm New! Starting Muay Thai?? Advice?
I've been looking into learning a martial art or sport fighting skills and Muay Thai has been the one to stand out to me the most. I contacted an athletic club that teaches Muay Thai, Boxing, Jiujitsu (sp?) and MMA. They offered to let me come to a few classes for free to get a feel for it and see if I want to join. First…

RIP O-Sensei Fukuda
From Black Belt magazine... It is with a great deal of sadness that we report that O-Sensei Keiko Fukuda passed away at the age of ninety nine this past Saturday. Professor Fukuda devoted nearly her entire life to learning and then teaching the purest form of Kodokan judo, personally taught to her by the founder of judo,…

total rookie, looking for advice!
I apologize if this has already been asked in an earlier thread.... I am just considering pursuing some training in martial arts. In the past I have participated in a lot of organized sports but never any fighting or self defense. There is a lot of different martial art styles/types and it's a little overwhelming. What…

unfortunately Mr Speakman has been diagnosed recently with stage 4 throat cancer. he has started radiation therapy and will begin chemo also. They are hoping that this will fix it. It is operable but this means taking out the voice box. All this just as he had signed on for a part in the expendables 3 as well. There is a…

Any good non-fiction MA books that you would recommend?
Since 2013 has arrived, i think one of my "resolutions" is to start reading more books, and i figured why not start with reading something of interest like Martial Arts. Does anyone recommend anything i can add to my "scarce" library of books?

Recommendations for kids
I have two boys I want to get started in some form or martial art. They are 6 and 7. We have a great local jujitsu school that is highly regarded but there are also several other disciplines to chose from. Can anyone make any recommendations or suggestions given their ages? So far I'm leaning towards the jujitsu school.

Training Partners
Okay, a little rant and what I hope is a lesson. I despise people who join a MA class and think that at every moment they need to "make it real"!! I have been training in JKD for over 2 years. Some of the movements and combinations we learn are complex and take time to learn and even longer to master. If my partner during…

What style MA do you do and what are you currently learning?
I realised from another thread in this section, that I don't know much about other MA styles or even other tkd schools, I just went to mine because my brother and sister in law go there. So, I do tkd. At my school it is very structured, all adult coloured belts learn the same syllabus for a few months, are graded, then all…

Martial Arts Speech
Hey, I was considering writing a speech (for college) on martial arts. Any thoughts or recommendations? My age group is college kids. I'd like to overall inform them that martial arts isn't about beating people up, and key in on respect and preparation.
