  • It's good that you're setting realistic goals. I know a woman who expects to go from a size 26 to a size 10 in time for her wedding less than a year away. For people who get discouraged when they realize how long weight loss can take, I'll pass on what a personal trainer once said to me -- it took you years to put *on* the…
  • Depends on what I'm doing. I use my Garmin, too, but for playing team sports such as handball I just have to guesstimate.
  • I use mine when running. The only thing I don't like about it is that the interface can be tricky to navigate. Plus, I can't seem to get the USB connector to work... Other than that, I don't run without it.
  • t works by muscle group. If you work upper body one day, you should let your upper body rest for two full days. Cardoon can be done 5 or 6 days a week.
  • When I did my half-marathon I carried two of those travel thingies of Kleenex with me.
  • Yes and no. For calorie burning, varying your routine (aka cross training) is a good idea, but if you love running enough that you want to train for a marathon or something like it, then letting your body become used to running a lot might not burn as many calories, but it's still a good thing.
  • Don't get me wrong, I've always said that the single best workout is the one you like to do so much that you'll do it as often as possible. There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of them, so if you enjoy them and running too, then you can certainly do both.
  • I'd see a doctor, personally. There are a lot of treatable medical conditions that can cause lethargy, from depression to low testosterone to a vitamin deficiency.
  • I get very creative with sauces and dressings. I'm learning a lot about how to mix spices, which are salt-free, with each other to come up with cool combos. If you're a member of Costco, then you can get Kirkland Organic No-Salt Seasoning, which I put on damn near everything these days. It's just that tasty. For…
  • I don't like to go to bed hungry because it makes it harder to sleep, but I never eat just to get the calories up, either. If I'm not hungry, I don't eat. If I am, usually a granola bar or Skinny Cow is enough for me.... or maybe both.
  • Well, they might help your sex life but I don't think there's any benefit outside of that.
  • Go ask a few Olympic gold medalists how often they use DVD fitness videos. (Hint: They don't)
  • Wish there was an easy answer, but you just have to find some that you enjoy greatly. Some people also enjoy doing a different thing every week. For me, it's team handball. I discovered a club near me three years ago and instantly fell in love. I've since been to two National Championships and tried out for the US Olympic…
  • I have the 410. Love it.
  • Not to mention that interval training is great if you play any sports or plan to in the future. I tried out for the US Olympic handball team once and we had to do a series of shuttle runs. We had to run 25 meters, turn back and run 25 meters back to the start line, then after a fifteen-second rest we repeated until we had…
  • I only had two concussions in my football playing days that I know of, but my testosterone is borderline low. I'm going to see my doctor about it Thursday.
  • Never underestimate the value of finding someone -- female or male -- who looks like they know what they are doing and ask for help. Most people there are glad to give tips.
  • You will need to know: 1) Your budget (A good pair can be had for something between $100-$125) 2) Get a shoe that feels one size too large. Your feet swell during exercise, especially running. 3) They will let you go for a test jog in or just outside the store. Pay particular attention to how the shoes feel with regards to…
  • I log my exercises but I know my body well enough to know that I, particularly, don't really need to eat those calories back unless I worked out exceptionally hard that day. If i burned 500 calories, I'll eat a 200-calorie Clif bar afterward or during to get the protein that I need, but I try not to go over 2400 cals/day…
  • True, but sometimes the best way to dump a fear is to face it. Ask a skydiver.
  • That's when you eat a lot of protein. Get a chicken breast or big pile of beans or something like that. Your muscles need it to repair itself, and that's why just about every gym sells protein bars at the counter. (Though most of them are junk, TBH -- I stick to Clif bars)
  • I've always said that the single best workout there is is the one that you like to do the most.
  • I usually log insanity with my psychiatrist. Couldn't resist -- :)
  • I use EA Sports Active for the PS3. It comes with a HR monitor and automatically calculates the calories you have burned by using your weight and HR. Plus, that software kicks my *kitten*.
  • True, but your body will tell you if it has switched to burning sugar instead of fat by making you get insanely tired quickly. If you are able to run at a steady pace for 30 minutes, you are burning fat. I don't pay *too* much attention to my HR because I know that my max HR is much higher than the 220-age formula would…
  • It won't hurt, per se, but the thing about hand or ankle weights is that your body compensates by not letting you run as fast. If you want to carry weights and/or vigorously swing your arms with weights, then go for it, but you probably won't burn more calories. Remember, it's not the calories per mile that's important.…
  • Weightlifting builds muscle. Muscle burns fat, even when you are doing nothing. Ergo, if you want to lose fat, build muscle.
  • You've lost 22 pounds. Your body doesn't have to work as hard to get you moving. It's like measuring the fuel efficiency of your empty car compared to when it is fully loaded.
  • I ate like crap yesterday because I went to a party with lots of yummy food. It's not a problem. I just go right back to what I have been doing today and the small hit I took last night will be inconsequential. In fact, indulging once a week and going over budget is not bad at all, and in some cases even recommended…
