Brooks Trance for longer distances Mizuno Wave Precision for short runs An old pair of Saucony Rides for runs where it's raining/snowing/or muddy I'm a total running shoe junkie so I probably have 10+ pairs of running shoes somewhere in my apartment. I can't bear to throw them out even if they're not fit for running…

I'm running a local Turkey Trot in my inlaw's hometown. It's a charity race so that part isn't douchey. And I'll be home well in time to help with all the cooking and cleaning so that's not douchey. But I will, probably, feel a little self-righteous so maybe just a little douchey.

Wow. I see a huge difference--it looks to me like you're shrinking all over. The first set of pictures (side view) is amazing. Good work! I wish I could lose 6 lbs while traveling!!

You'll want a good fanny pack for your first 5k. Make sure to pack: power gels, salt packets, runners lube, blister blocks, extra gloves and socks. And of course your phone so you can snap pix and send to Facebook at every mile marker. Also get a bottle holder for energy drink. Racing alone is boring so bring your 3 best…

When the weather gets cool, you definitely want to dress in layers. A good plan is: start with a heavy cotton tshirt. You'll want a heavier cotton sweatshirt over that--something from Margaritaville will impress! And if it's really chilly(say, over 60*), add a cordoroy jacket. And don't forget the track pants!

Becco on W. 46th St. Try to get there after the pre-theater crowd. Amazing affordable wine list and pasta specials. Take a walk on the High Line at sunset. Go tasting Italian food/wine at Eataly on Madison Square Park. Go ethnic anywhere: it's all good!!!

That's a great race. Congratulations. And sweet new age group!
-
You look gorgeous. Great job (and aren't you happy you saved the dress?)

I like addidas technical shorts/shirts but I hate paying full price. I can usually find them at TJMaxx or the outlet stores.

^^^ my vote too. I don't think I've had one since reaching legal drinking age.

juice cleanse.

^^^ This. I love this book. The bodyweight exercises are great and scaled from easy to very difficult. All the "equipment" is just stuff you should have around your home.

Great thread. Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA.

Congratulations. What an amazing accomplishment!

I'm extremely middle-aged and love to run, cycle, swim, ski, hike and scuba. I'm sending a F/R and welcome mature friends who also like to get out and live.

I use "quick add" when I eat something that I really can't break down. A few days ago I had dinner with a friend. She made some sort of casserole. Rather than pick apart every ingredient and listing "3 peas, 1/12 potato, 1/2 cup some kind of thickened sauce, a couple slivers of chicken..." in my diary, I just eyeballed it…

I love their basil pesto. Not the one in the jar but the refrigerated kind. It's pretty concentrated so I add a little olive oil & garlic when I use it. Mmmm. Love their nuts & greek yogurts too. I have to laugh at the "no line" comments though. In our local TJ's the line wraps around the whole store. Sometimes more than…

Drugs, sex, rock & roll. Not necessarily in that order.

You should be very proud--it's a great accomplishment to RUN your first 5k.

I have 2 memberships. The first is at a local rec center. I use that one just for the pool although they do have some fitness equipment. The second is a much larger facility with weights and cardio machines and, well, everything I need in a gym (except the pool!). Also, the second one has branches all over the city so I…

I would guess that very few of us go straight from A to B when it comes to weight-loss & fitness. I know I've zig-zagged all over the place but eventually I try to keep moving forward. The important thing is that you're back in the game. Good for you for looking beyond what sounds like a highly stressful time.

I read every word and enjoyed the whole story. Great job and I'm looking forward to hearing about your 100 lb. landmark!

I'm sending a friend request. I'm over 50 and also looking for...uh..."mature" friends. Anyone else please feel free to add me. I try to log in every day and encourage anyone who is making a sincere effort. Or if you're not making a sincere effort then at least have a good sense of humor :D That works too!
-
I am so impressed with what you've done. Congratulations--that's 620 days of a lot of really hard work. Kind of makes everybody else's excuses sound pretty lame!

Another vote for Sodastream. I hate still water but when I buzz it up in my sodastream & add a little lemon or lime I can drink it forever. And you won't have a million bottles to recycle~

The only thing I judge in people at my gym is rudeness and lack of personal hygiene. If you're considerate, clean and know what deodorant is for you'll be fine. Every gym I've belonged to has offered some sort of one-on-one orientation with a trainer. That will get you familiar with the equipment and maybe the vibe of that…

When I read stories like this I'm just in awe. It took a ton of guts and perseverance to do what you did. Congratulations on an enormous accomplishment and good luck on the marathon!

belly fat toilet tissue (seems so inadequate vs toilet PAPER) "I need to go to the little girls' room"--that one just makes my skin crawl

Be really careful about running through an injury. Sometimes taking a day or two off will keep a little problem from becoming a chronic problem! And leave your technology home sometimes and just run for the sheer fun of it: no watch, no gps, no tunes...just you and the road. It can be pretty zen!
