  • Most of these made me chuckle or nod in agreement, but this one made me laugh heartily. The only new one I have is you have seriously considered putting a CD in your car with the Rocky theme song so you can drive behind another running blasting it out your windows because you really want someone to do that for you someday.
  • Sarcasm aside, Alex is right. I have known many tattoo artists over the years and they hate doing what is called 'flash' artwork (its the drawings you see in all tattoo shops hanging from the walls). If you want a quality tattoo come up with something yourself. Even if you can't draw all you have to do is get a close…
  • Agreed. I was offering my own experience and observation. Biking has made me faster. Is it likely because of the increased cardio? Almost certainly. But I was able to increase my cardio days without taxing my joints.
  • I think this is an axiom that is going to apply regardless of how you go about it. Bikers call it TITS (Time In The Seat) and it applies to runners just as equally. I thought the same way and looked at biking as a rest day exercise. If you can find the right group of riders its a really good all around exercise. Hills work…
  • Its may be a bit unconventional but I have noticed a pretty significant increase in speed over the past month after adding road biking into my schedule. I ride long rides (minimum 20 miles, max 72) with a group of guys two or three days a week. They are training for a century ride so we rotate distance and hills each week.…
  • I have an Addidas clima-cool shirt that is analogous to this shirt. I can attest that it does wick the sweat away and does a good job of dispersing it. I personally don't like it though because it gets too cold in the lower back where the shirt doesn't always make skin contact. Its really nasty feeling. Once the sweat gets…
  • lulz Hand on bible this happened this morning. Late 80's Buick drove past me this morning and I could smell the dude's cologne as he drove past me. He was doing at least 35. And I am pretty sure he had his windows up. How on Earth can someone put on that much cologne? Either that or I was hyper sensitive (it was around…
  • Yep. As someone who has one of those medical conditions I can attest. I watched my cholesterol for months using MFP and was consistently under RDA but my blood levels were still high. I upped my exercise significantly (went from running 10-15 miles to running 20-25, biking around 100, and swimming a couple hundred meters)…
  • That's awesome. I did one last Saturday that I timed at 28:30. Guntime was 29:30.
  • This morning I broke my PR for a 10k run by a full five minutes (1:05:00). Last time I PR'ed it was on 10 mile run on a hilly course (and it was pouring, but I think that actually helped). Today's run was flat, the air was cool and crisp, and I just felt in the zone. Set out to do five miles, mid run decided to stretch it…
  • I followed the C25K program which ended with me doing a 5k (obviously) from there I sort of followed the 10k continuation program but moved on to the Hal Higdon half marathon plan. Both plans are similar to Im_NotPerfect's plan of having the weekday runs sort of short with a long run on the weekend and gradually tacking on…
  • I have eczema and break out under the Flex band as well. You might want to have a doctor look at the rash and see if you do as well. For me I have to put a little dab of steroid cream on it every few days to keep it from getting bad.
  • At my LRS they have a shirt that says 'If you see me passed out, please pause my Garmin'. Always liked that one. I have the 'My sport is your sport's punishment' magnet on my fridge.
  • Everyone is a bit different when it comes to calorie burn, so your question is a bit subjective. I get what you are after though. As a comparison when I run five miles (which takes me about an hour, so comparable to your elliptical work) I burn 700-800 calories usually. Your numbers aren't that unrealistic. Never trust the…
  • Caffeine is an appetite suppressant. Diet Coke is high in caffeine. Same effect could probably be had from coffee or similar for those that are worried about aspartame.
  • Depends on what your goal is. If all you are after is a calorie burn then purely elliptical is fine. If you want to add tone, lift weights. If you want to add endurance elliptical is fine as is the treadmill. If you are bored with elliptical then move on to treadmill. The important thing is to find something you like that…
  • This is my vote as well. Sitting at my desk my resting HR is mid 60's but when I get up to go for run, put on shoes, put on the HRM, etc. it will raise up to 80-90 bpm. Just the act of moving around getting ready will raise your HR.
  • No, I just spent this whole thread trying to not make it one of those threads.
  • There is no real comparison between a pedometer (which is all a FitBit is) to a HRM. Fitbit is great for full day tracking (i.o.w. when you are not in gym or out running). Fitbit is NOT great for tracking exercise. If you are wanting to choose between one or the other, choose the HRM. You can get a cheep pedometer on…
  • Fair enough. I said effect. Yes, carbs will have an effect just like protein, fat, etc. I did not say it was a direct effect as you say I did, insinuating that there is a one to one correlation between X grams of carbs = X pounds gained. As I said, fruits, veggies, lean protein. I assumed that OP was smart enough to know…
  • Maybe you should go back and read the last paragraph in my post. OP asked: I then made my comment about carbs that you have latched onto followed by this paragraph: At no point did I say that sugar directly affects weight loss or gain. OP was wanting to know if going over on her carbs was bad. I said that carbs have a…
  • This is the problem with forums, its easy to take things out of context. If I ate nothing but carbs and was under my BMR would I lose weight? Absolutely. If I eat a mixed diet and am under my BMR but am heavy in carbs will I lose weight? Absolutely. If eat a diet high in carbs will I feel hungrier than if I eat a diet…
  • http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3056265 There was a better research paper released a few months ago that I can't find and don't have the time to look for at the moment. I agree that a deficit is all that is required for weight loss, but sometimes getting that deficit with a high carb diet is really difficult.
  • I am consistently over on my sodium as well. Sugar I am good about keeping under (I did low carb for many months so its kind of second nature now). Sodium will cause you to retain water and therefore cause you weigh more. However if you exercise for long durations (depending on who you talk to long duration is 1.5-2+…
  • I only run in my Pure's. Longest run to date is 10 miles. Quick note about the Pure series, there are different version in the Pure series for over, under, and non pronators. I run in the Cadences, my wife runs in the Flows. Both are Brooks Pure's. OP would be wise to go to the LRS and get fitted properly as I can't…
  • IME knee pain is due to one of two things: old shoes that need to be replaced or, more likely, bad form. Pay attention to your stride and posture, especially where you strike on your foot, and make sure you are not heel striking. There are a number of videos on You Tube that demonstrate proper running form and technique.…
  • Absolutely. If you have to choose between the two the HRM is the way to go. However, HRM's are not well suited for full day tracking, whereas the Fitbits are.
  • I HATE running. Hate, hate, hate it. However, I LOVE what it does for me more than I hate it. Regarding OP's pain issues I would recommend, as others have, that she make sure she has proper shoes and to also look into one of the several running form [groups/disciplines/not sure what to call them]. I read up on Chi Running…
  • That was one thing I really liked about the keto diet. When I first went into ketosis I suddenly had tons of energy. I ended up washing and waxing both mine and my wife's cars and still felt I needed to run a marathon. That was one of the reasons I picked up C25K. Bodies are weird.
  • This is what my gut was telling me (although having actual numbers is better). Thanks!
