  • I am not a vegetarian, but most of my meals are meat free. Today, for example, I don't plan to have any meat at all, nor did I have any yesterday. Two days ago the only meat I had was a little chicken stock, easily replaced with vegetable stock.
  • One week in! It wasn't as bad as I expected, actually. I definitely miss being with students, but I think we'll be okay, and it is much safer doing this virtually (I'm in an area with a ton of cases, so we simply can't go back yet).
  • Gam3rguy — I hope your ankle recovery goes smoothly! My week has been extra active: a few long hikes and increases on all my weights. Today I’ve woken up incredibly sore. I may just skip the gym and do some yoga at home to recover. I’ve got a few hours before I have to decide.
  • This was an interesting read. Thanks!
  • Most people at the gym are focused on their own workouts. When I find myself watching others at the gym, I usually do so to see if they’re doing something I’d like to try or if there’s something in their form (good or bad) that can help me perfect my form. It really all goes back to me. In normal life, I’m not a…
  • HI! I’m in my early 40s and recovering from several years of disability. Now that I can do moderate amounts of exercise I enjoy, I'm excited to get back in shape. 😊 My goals: - Exercise at least 5x/week, a mix of strength training, flexibility training, and cardio. - Lose the 15 pounds I gained due to pain medication,…
  • What day is your race? Maybe you could do morning runs that day each week and stick to your evening runs the rest of the week. Back when I ran, I had to do this out of necessity because of my work schedule, and it served me well on race day.
  • I'd like to foster, but can't because my husband's and my work schedules don't allow us to go to the trainings at the same time (nevermind the fact that that schedule would allow us to be available to a kid in crisis 24/7). It's truly a frustrating process -- even more so for those trying to adopt, I would imagine.…
  • If you end up not very active (which would be surprising), perhaps you could share some with your buddies or some of the people you're helping. I imagine you'll easily burn 2000, though, with all the work needed there. Focus on the help you're providing, and get back on track when you return home. You're doing good work.…
  • That would complete depend on why you have issues with weight. CBT will help with the mental and emotional issues, and a dietician with the practical rules of healthy eating.
  • Why in the world would you do this? And weight-loss doesn't need a jump start -- it just needs you to start something you can stick with.
  • On the one hand, I'm glad you're not actually fasting -- three mochachinos and a glass of wine probably get you to 1200 cals -- but if you're going to have 1200 cals, why not actually have some food?
  • I have trouble sleeping after any workout that isn't restorative yoga. It's pretty normal. The teas you mentioned also have caffeine, so depending on what time of day you're drinking them, they could be part of your problem. You could try not having any caffeine past, say, 10am.
  • I'm healing from a hamstring sprain (or possibly strain) myself. I was told after the initial week of rest to do as much activity as I could without pain. I'm 20 days in and can walk fine for short flat distances, ride a recumbent bike, and can even do a decent amount of yoga (nothing forward bending or hamstring focused,…
  • I don't much like the initial taste, either. :p I'd rather have a little bit of what I really want than a lot of something not quite it.
  • Maybe you're restricting too much throughout the day. I like to keep my meals relatively balanced in calorie allotment. On the other hand, you might benefit from eating a little less early on so you can eat more later. Play with things until you find what works for you.
  • I keep my mouth shut unless the person says something first. I think it's fine to compliment a haircut/dye, nice outfit, cool tattoo, etc. But body shape and size are off limits. No matter how well intentioned, it can easily offend. That said, I generally don't care if people comment on my body. I've never heard anyone say…
  • Holy crap! Your SUPERVISOR?! Wow. Just... wow. I remember when I was young, my dad totally stuck his foot in his mouth with someone who had recently given birth. He thought she was pregnant again. She played it off well, sparing my dad some more awkwardness than he already felt when he realized his mistake, and I learned…
  • Happy and healthy really can't be beat. Congrats on moving away from unhealthy weight loss strategies.
  • You already got linked to the pertinent thread, and I hope you've read it. Meanwhile, you're going to have to learn to be patient.
  • I pack salads usually, but also sandwiches or occasional leftovers that don't need reheating. I just put an ice pack in my lunch bag and all is good even on the hottest days.
  • It certainly improves when I have more muscle mass, but I had cellulite even when I was underweight. No reason not to wear what you like; anyone who would judge you for it is someone whose opinion shouldn't matter.
  • Oh, man -- in my pre-Celiac days, I loved graham crackers! My parents would only let us have one a day, though. I'm a little envious right now. :) On topic: what everyone else said. It happened. Move on. At least it was something tasty.
  • I do this with success. Every weekend of late has had a food-based event (or two!), so I dropped my weekday calories and have been enjoying my weekends. I'm still losing at my planned 0.5 pounds/week (I'm technically in maintenance, but I got to the high end of my range and am dropping to the low end before the holidays).
  • Swimming would absolutely work. :) You might also be able to do some resistance band work, and while 10 pounds isn't a lot, it's still more than zero and far from a waste. You could do more reps (if the doctors approve, of course). Good luck!
  • I get plain, unflavored. I can't stand artificial flavoring, and it only takes a few seconds to drink.
  • I've never checked anyone out at the gym, but I do sometimes stare at other people's exercises to get ideas or analyze form as I rest between sets. I also dress like an absolute slob at the gym, so if I get stared at, I'd assume it's someone judging my form. No matter how I dressed, though, I would expect no leering or…
  • Aching and/or fever = no exercise for me. I'll usually do light exercise at home if I just have a run-of-the-mill cold, but I won't go to the gym until I won't be sharing my germs with anyone.
  • I sincerely hope you were not paying that trainer for that horrible advice. Possibly more important than the physical benefits of weight training (of which there are many) is the fact that you enjoyed it more and felt challenged. That sounds like it'll be something you stick with. My husband gets all his cardio in at work…
