Maybe the doc meant low "sugar" / low fat?? I.e., whole grains are fine, but try to avoid high glycemic effect carbohydrates? I agree with most -- best to talk with a dietician for a detailed plan.

@cblue315 -- Thanks for that quote. It made me smile, and it's SO TRUE! @RobinsEgg -- Thanks for sticking with this thread. I'm new here, and I don't know anyone well -- yet -- but it's such an inspiring, welcoming, SAFE place to come for support and motivation. Even though I'm new and fairly quiet, it's a comfort to check…

Just thought I'd say hi. Today is the first sunny day in a long time, so my husband and I are celebrating by doing some yardwork. :-) The exercise is helping me get out of the funk that raising teenagers put me in. I'm about 3 weeks in to my new commitment to eat extremely healthy (following a few books on fighting cancer…

@Morgori -- Thanks for the info on World Health Day yesterday! Interesting! @kah68 -- I'm jealous about the Fitbit Charge HR! I just looked into it today, but the thing is, I'll need an extra large for my wrist. The website says that they're backlogged on the extra larges and will not be shipping until June. Boo hoo! Now…

Sorry @JoRocka and @melimomTARDIS … didn't mean any offense to vegans by implying that I've gone vegan when I haven't. I said heading in that direction, but it's more accurate to say I'm heading in the direction of vegetarian … away from eating meat multiple times a day. In any case, I apologize if I offended anyone.…

I have recently decided to head in the direction of a vegan lifestyle. Mostly for health reasons, partly for ethical reasons. Personally, I don't have a problem with eating chickens or eggs, for example, but I refuse to purchase industrially raised chickens / eggs. I think farm animals should be humanely treated to the…

Green tea is REALLY healthful, for a lot of reasons. I've started drinking 3 cups a day, and I really enjoy it. I drink Tazo's Zen version (and a few other varieties). I agree that you shouldn't force yourself to drink something that you hate, but before you give up, try a few different versions, try it with a little honey…

@shaunjadon -- You ARE beautiful, and you've shown that you are responsible and you've got impressive smarts and and drive! It's not easy to change long-held habits and lose weight, but my advice would be to be sure to log in every day. Log what you eat, to the best of your ability, but even more importantly (I think), is…

Wow … what a great video -- and then I followed links and found more amazing videos relating to foods that fight cancer. Thanks for bringing this fantastic resource to my attention!!

MFP is an amazing tool. It's fantastic on lots of levels. However, if I simply track my calories and hit my macros it doesn't necessarily mean I'm eating healthy -- at all. If I'm not getting a variety of vegetables and legumes, for example, I will be missing out on a huge list of vitamins and other phytochemicals and…

@jaferjoy -- Good luck in your interview! I used to be an executive. I hired lots of people and was around a lot of other people making hiring decisions. In my experience, people won't spend too much time judging based on weight. Unless it's somehow relevant to the job (you have to squeeze between narrow airline aisles),…

Thank you very much to all the people who have welcomed me here. I appreciate it! As a newbie to this thread, are there any traditions here? (Posting goals or whatever?) It looks like A LOT of the members here are teachers, am I right? As far as my weight goes, I have come to believe that there are a LOT of societal…

Hi -- I have been on MFP very inconsistently over the past couple years. I'm trying to renew my focus right now. I am more than 100 lbs overweight, but I don't want to focus too much on that big number. Instead I intend to focus on smaller milestones. I have 6.6 lbs to lose for my next milestone, and then after that I'll…

Have you tried hiding the veggies in your food, to get SOME healthy veggies in? By this I mean, for example, try cooking cauliflower and then put it in a blender with a little bit of milk or cream, and then add it to a regular macaroni and cheese recipe. You can add some to a instant mac and cheese, or, much better yet,…

Just double-checked and yes, you can customize this. Go to Goals -- Change Goals -- Customize. Good luck!

I had the exact same question and issue when I first joined. What I learned is that MFP's baseline for sugar is quite low, way too low, I believe. But like you, I didn't want to just ignore the metric. Did you know that you can manually change the metric? I'm pretty sure you can (but it's been a while since I've played…

Macouns! I was (and still am) utterly shocked that no one besides me mentioned Macouns! Everyone I know LOVES them! I did a search of the internet to see if I could find any clues why. Wikipedia agrees with me that Macouns are "regarded to be the finest eating apple in the world." It also states "Macouns are also very…

There's one apple that -- for eating purposes at least -- puts all other apples in the dust. It's the hands-down winner by far and I'm shocked no one has mentioned it. Maybe because it's only available early in the season in the fall. The Macoun. Yum. Perfect combination of tart and sweet, nice crisp texture, juicy ....…

Thanks everyone, for all the advice. I've decided to increase the target to 50g instead of 33g. This way I still pay attention to the sugar, but the target is not a guaranteed fail. Based on your advice, I'm not going to worry about the sugar too much (especially if it comes from fruit and skim milk or yogurt), but I am…

Hi Jackie -- Congratulations on your survivorship! I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer 3 years ago. It had spread to lymph nodes and my bones. I underwent chemo for almost 2 years. Doctors were amazed at my progress. I seem to be in complete remission. You can tell by the "seem to be" that I'm hesitant and…
