  • Hello! I'm new to this page and just looking for friends that are on a similar journey, namely, trying to stay healthy and fit in your 50's, and beyond! I never had a weight problem until I got into my 50's and it was super hard to lose the weight. I'm fighting the fight (the weight gain, the muscle loss, the depression,…
  • Just found this group! Sorry I’m late! In a nutshell, I’m 57, married, kids are grown and gone, and I work a full time job. My goal is to be super healthy and fit. All I can find on the internet are either young people with perfect bodies or women training to be bodybuilders. I want to see what is possible to achieve at my…
  • Day 11 and still wine free! Passed my "wine night" again with nothing to drink. Hung out with my next door neighbor a bit, my "drinking buddy," and neither of us had a drop! Just sat on his back patio and looked at the stars and talked. It was nice to wake up this morning and actually remember our conversations. We are…
  • Day 9 and so far so good!
  • I wish this site was more like Facebook where I could "like" posts so you all know I've read yours! I love reading everyone's posts, they are so supportive and motivating and makes this journey not seem so lonely. :) @tmbg1: Sometimes it takes a bad night to remind us why we're trying to dry out in the first place. It's a…
  • @Somebody Loved: Congratulations, keeping it to one glass! I used to be able to do that but it's been awhile. I am hoping to be able to get back to that limited enjoyment but for now I just need to dry out and let my poor body heal. Day 6 for me! It's Friday night and no wine--and I feel great about that! No Saturday…
  • I am so inspired by all of you who have posted on here and can relate! I am excited for those starting out (that's me!) and for those who have been successful for weeks and months! I am on Day 4 and feel great! I can relate to the "celebrations." I was celebrating everything: mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, Friday…
  • Joining this group late but glad I found it! I have made a decision TODAY to stop drinking permanently and have shared my decision with my friends, especially those that I have ever had a drink with. I feel great about my decision! Happy to meet others who are drying out as well!
  • Thanks for the input. I think, based on everything, I'm at least close to where I should be. I guess I'll have to be content with that, all things considered, and just keep an eye on my trending. Thank you, again, to both of you for putting in your time to help answer my question!
  • ...and I wanted to add that I don't have calipers. I know it won't be 100% accurate, but I'd like to come close to a number I know is reliable.
  • I have struggled with weight gain for the first time in my life since reaching 50. I am now 53 and what has worked for me is a combination of a reasonably healthy diet and exercise. I am not a purist with my food choices and I'm not a gym rat, but I've found that if I practice good habits and keep my net calories just…
  • I didn't have a lot of problems with my excess skin (due to pregnancies) until I turned 50; my skin is now losing all its elasticity. Now when I bend over it hangs (ugh). I can't afford surgery so it will just have to stay. What helps me deal with it is actually thinking about my husband. He lost 100 lbs and has a lot of…
  • I recently set mine from Private to Open for friends. My reason for Private was to be able to be honest with myself on logging without being held back by feelings of shame or judgment on a bad eating day ("Did you really eat a whole box of Girl Scout cookies??"). I don't like being affected by anyone else's thoughts or…
  • That's a good question! I like the accountability of logging and keeping my diary open, or rather, I need the accountability! It forces me to make better choices. I guess if I ever get to the point where I eat only healthy foods and maintain portion control naturally I won't need to log, but I don't see that day ever…
  • I know where you're coming from. People have always told me women don't bulk but I guess I am one of the exceptions that can. I'm not saying I can look like Atlas, but I used to bike up and down hills when I was young and built up some serious thigh muscles. As a result, it is very easy for a little exercise to build up my…
  • I don't think there's a perfect answer to this question. Everyone's so different and I've seen it all on here. If you're looking to post something without offending anyone, you have your work cut out for you, lol! My best advice is just to be honest and, I guess, "politically correct." For me, honesty is the best policy…
  • Thanks for all the great ideas! Some of them I'm doing but some of other ideas have shown me that I need to make better use of my time that I'm not at my desk. I don't have much extra time, but I know that even 10 minutes of continuous effort can give me about 1000 steps. I've also stopped walking my dogs because of the…
  • I feel your pain! I lost a pound last week and was happy, gained 1/2 pound as of today's weigh-in and now I'm sad. I never had this problem when I was younger but now that I'm in my 50's, everything that passes my lips makes me gain weight and so now I've become obsessed with tracking everything: food, exercise, and…
  • I love wine, too! I've had to cut my wine drinking down to weekends only to lose weight and this works great for me. I tried the Skinny Girl wines which are okay, the reds are better tasting than the whites, in my opinion. But I love a good chardonnay, so I'm sticking to the better brands if I decide to drink at all.
  • I had a Fitbit One and loved it! I have the Fitbit Surge now and really love it! I've only had it about a week and the hardest thing is the low battery life. Some people get 6 days and I get 2 but I'm still playing with it. I love the online community, similar to MFP and I can also compete with friends. It keeps me…
  • I try to eat "clean" but I'm not strict about it so I guess I can't truly call myself a "clean eater." I'm a sort of hybrid of clean eating/moderation/calorie counting and that works for me. I make pretty healthy choices overall by choosing whole foods on a daily basis and also making sure I'm staying within my calorie…
  • Thanks for the new ideas, everyone! :) I am trying the Monk Fruit now which doesn't have as much of an aftertaste as the Stevia, or maybe I'm just getting used to it. I also sometimes use Sugar in the Raw. I love honey, agave syrup, and pure maple syrup, the maple which tastes awesome in oatmeal! I just need to be watchful…
  • I'll be your friend! I'm sorry there were so many negative responses when you were just looking for some ideas and support for eating healthier. Some people just love to be negative and combative for some reason. I don't understand that attitude but I've learned to ignore people like that and focus on what is…
  • Thanks for all the great advice! :) I will work down the list!
  • I love salty and crunchy foods, too, and popcorn is my favorite! I will probably get a lot of flack from admitting that I pop it in oil (safflower) but I'm trying to stay away from pre-packaged foods and I just can't do the air popper thing. I put a little sea salt on it and it's awesome! No butter needed!
