My friend is on an anti-inflammatory diet and she lives by garlic and ginger. I guess I should pay attention to what else she eats, but those are definite staples in her diet. It's always fresh ginger, btw. She makes tea, shreds it into most stove-top dishes, and her protein shakes.

I like to smash it up just enough to use it as a spread (thickly!) on sandwiches, especially grilled chicken!

And your credentials are...? If I'm wrong, please explain what is wrong instead of just blasting my info with nothing to back yourself up.

I've had good trainers, but I've seriously (re)injured myself before by not saying to the therapist "No. That's too heavy, I can't do that. Please give me another exercise." You know your body limitations better than anyone else and saying no is not a weakness. List to your body and push it, but you will know (like you did…

Abs and muscle gain go very well together. You need the core strength from ab and back exercises in addition to other strength training. You'll maintain proper form and posture. I will lift upper body one day, lower body the next but do some abs most days. Then, as you're gaining the muscle and abs, the other poster is…

All of this is really good info, but I just started reading my roommate's women's fitness bible (I call it that, but I'll have to get back to you on the title.) And it very clearly explained that you actually need to vary your reps so your muscles don't get complacent. The heavier weights/lower reps (5-8 reps for 4-5 sets)…

My nephew calls his great grandma "meemaw" and grandma "tea mamaw" (because she gives him sweet tea.) Some cousins also use opa and oma for grandma and grandpa. We just used grandma/grandpa.

I'm 5'2", and at 22 I was 142lbs and "too fat" to join the military. Nevermind that I wore a size 12. (I stretched out to 5'3" while being measured so I could join and 142lbs was perfectly acceptable.) Now I'm 145lbs and I wear a size 10. I got all the way down to a size 6 at 128 lbs. Now, you see the difference between my…

Thank you so much! I cook so rarely because I'm busy and if today's diary is any indication, I will probably eat double the number of calories I should if I don't bring my own food. I'll let you know if I find the individual steam-bag veggies.

Don't kid yourself. Smoking is NOT healthy. You may run 10 miles, but your lungs would appreciate no smoke so you could run 20! Please, no one get the idea that smoking is healthy. It's not. It's just one more health roadblock to get over. Most people recognized that, but like all good habits, it takes time and hard work…

I did something similar tonight. I took a couple bites of my husband's mashed potatoes. I just try to make sure I'm under my calorie goal 100-300 calories to make up for those little bites.

Would your PT be okay with the elliptical since it's low impact? My PT always put me on the bike instead. Yuck! (Personal preference.) Also, I walked another 1.5 miles this evening with the dog!

What she said. I thought I was eating healthy, but seeing it there in black and white made me realize trends in my eating habits. How often was I eating out? I'm eating too much sugar. I'm not getting enough protein. This help me slowly change my diet for the better. Healthier foods, less blood sugar crashes, fuller tummy…

I see what you did there. They're still good reasons!

Zombies chasing you? There's an app for that. It maps out zombies in your town and the closer/farther you run from them, the louder/quieter they sound.

9/3 - Walked 1.5 miles 9/4 - Ran (slow jog?) on elliptical 1.5 miles; biked 0.5 mile.

Cute color in your gym! Because I have free access to a gym that's right across from my work, I make do with an exercise ball, a few sets of dumbells (5, 10, and 25 lbs), and stretchy rubber tubes from my physical therapist. Between those, I can do pretty much all exercises I need.

I have a PT Test every 6 months: pushups, situps, and run. While I don't need to lose a lot of weight, I have trouble maintaining the muscle. I don't want to go into every test worrying I can't do it. I'm sick of that. On top of that, I have chronic back and hip pain. The hip hurts when I workout, but I've learned to suck…

If you have to ask, the answer is yes. That's how I make myself go. Glad you went too!

If you offered your mom a "break" by making the meal one night a week, do you think she'd allow that? That way you can introduce them to some healthier foods, and hopefully she'll either enjoy the break or enjoy being with you in the kitchen.

I use the Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 from GNC (or Sam's Club for cheaper). I decided on it after recommendations from friends, coworkers, and help from the GNC reps. I was adamant that I did NOT want a meal replacement, so this isn't that. Serving size is 60g protein (3 scoops) but I only use 1 scoop. 1 scoop is only…

5'2" and currently eating 1200-1300 calories per day to lose. About a year ago it was 1500-ish and still losing weight. I may have been doing harder workouts back then, I think. Maintain currently would be 1500. Goal weight is 125 lbs (and more toned), currently at 141.

Newbie here. I thought everyone's miles were really high, but I tend to only count running miles. Put me down for 40 miles. I hope to get 20 of those run miles, and the other 20 from elliptical, row machine, or whatever I feel like. Thanks!

^^This. He got the account but pretty much never logs in. He says he's on an "empathy" diet for me, but not for him. Pity because he does need to lose some weight whether he wants to admit it or not. He helped me run on the track the other day, so he's still involved occasionally. Just not on MFP.

^^This I want to get close, but I try my best not to go over. I try to enter my food as I eat it and keep my lunch and dinner to 300-400 calories. This way I know I'm not going over. If I see 800 calories to go at supper time, that means I can eat normally and be 200-300 calories under, or can allow myself a cookie. Either…

That's an awesome NSV too! My husband and I have bikes but we don't go together as much anymore. I certainly have NEVER biked 14 miles in one day! Like you said, you have to realize you can and just do what you are physically able to. Resting is not giving up either! You've given me another goal, thanks!

Excellent! Everyone has to start somewhere. Keep going!
