  • Haha. My incorrect use of affect rather than effect is case in point for the argument that exercise increases mental acuity (just took a jog). Now that I am thinking about it a bit more clearly - my main goal is hypertrophy (and strength) on my shoulders and arms. I want to cut fat soon (perhaps starting in Feb? If not…
  • Studies show moderate exercise has a positive affect on ones mood and mental acuity for about 12 hours. I am open to different programs - do you know of any alternatives?
  • verykatie, I like the way you physics.
  • Seriously.... why would you ever bother getting upset about "muscle weighs more than fat" if there is no units included? The logical assumption is a comparison of equal measurements (volume) differs by another measurement (weight). I honestly thought you started this thread because people were saying "a pound of muscle…
  • Thanks for the reply! I have actually used that one before - and if I switch the formula to Katch-McCardle I get 2044ish. The net result is between 200-300 calories difference on my TDEE (depending on workouts per week - which is almost always 5+). Using this: http://exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html I get higher…
  • I don't trust MFP for this either. In my opinion the Strength training burn is way to light for me. I tend to do super sets for most of my work outs, but not all so I can't put it in as "Circuit training." Also, ever wonder why bodyweight training (whatever that is) burns less than the weight lifting option? I tend to lift…
  • I think the context is really important. I mean, if you just exercise and disregard your intake you will probably eat the same amount or even more. This can lead to a readjustment of your weight but not necessarily a weight decrease. Did the article mention if the studies were incorporating a calorie deficit for these…
  • Hi and welcome! There are more than enough well informed people (and women) on here who can probably point you to good routines or programs but to answer your question a full body routine is typically better for a beginner and working more muscles at once typically increases the metabolic benefits you receive.
  • This one is realllly good. you don't need to use blue cheese either (we don't like it here) we used some reduced fat cheddar and it was incredible. We will be eating it while we watch Bama work over Notre Dame ;)
  • Id like to join!!
  • Its not ice cream... but cottage cheese mixed with whatever flavor protein powder you want (in a blender) and maybe some Stevia... Refrigerate or put in freezer for a bit and then enjoy! its more like frozen yogurt. Cottage cheese icecream. many variations out there.
  • I don't stretch outside of my workouts. If you lift you can lift slowly and stretch. Most injuries happen within a normal range of motion anyway... that extra bit you add doesn't really prevent injury. If you are sore, real tight feeling and all... that is probably a build up of lactic acid which comes from keeping your…

  • ENTJ --- http://www.personalitypage.com/ENTJ.html maybe majoring in Econ is actually a good idea!
  • Going by your stats given..... you want to reach approx 4% bf over the next two months. Unless your mistaken ab you current bf you should re-evaluate. Im 186 just ab 10-12 percent and it would be hard to cut to 4%. Id say another year or more of bulking/cutting. Aim smaller. Succeed then become more aggressive.
  • have you considered cooking your meats in olive oil?
  • From Charlotte.... Living in Wilmington with my gf!

  • If its light enough and kept in the "fat burning" heart range the calories burned will be more likely to come from fat. Unfortunately, its easier to burn more calories by going harder... even at a lesser percentage it turns out to be more fat calories burned. The idea behind it being fasted is your body won't have other…
  • I just now took a look at stronglifts, thanks for the link. I was aware of the limitations of Smith machines... that Steinborn looks like FUN! Warmachine... hoping the Y will have free enrollment soon!!
  • Why not eat after midnight? Hell if its after midnight it goes on to the NEXT days calories!!
  • Trying a good protein source before going to bed will make you more likely to feel full and not wake up. I used to wake up in the middle of the night before I started eating cottage cheese right before bed.
  • If you need to watch your carb intake, you have two real options for uping calories... It is actually really easy. Bake with/use EVOO more often. Cooking your chicken up in a skillet with a tbsp of olive oil will certainly help you increase the calories. Also, feel free to indulge in more "high calorie" foods that are…
  • Haha! Great job! I had a very similar night last night. I can't even try to log it! I am probably going to the gym but if you have a pretty regular routine and aren't interested in losing any more I would relax and let my body work it out. A few drinks and some unbridled domination of food can feel so good sometimes!
  • I think it would def be beneficial for you to start with a lower weight and really concentrate on keeping your back straight (focusing on your shoulders and looking up/forward should help with this.) On the bottom of your lift either slow until you are barely touching the ground and go back up or reset. When i do my…
  • For your weight it seems right. Nearly 2 hours is a pretty long time to be constantly moving! Great job!
  • I allow for the foods I am going to eat. Normally I eat some delicious cottage cheese concoction, lately pb and casein protein powder.
  • I am a huge fan of the brita water bottles (you can buy a two pack at sams I think.) they have a nice filter to give you fresh tasting water. There are other brands... Bobble is one but their not as small and probably wouldn't fit cup holders.
  • Flour---- All purpose flour? I like to use whole wheat but I'm assuming the lack of baking power and flexibility would mess with the taste ... any suggestions? A mix of the two or something.
  • I drink a whey protein shake to give my body energy. I work out almost as early. Whey is light and digests quickly. 15 minutes and you can be in the gym pumping iron and hitting the mill!
  • The craziest thing to say is "if you work out on an empty stomach you are burning fat." Its so much easier for your body to break down muscle and use it as energy if you are working hard. Anything that keeps your heart rate elevated significantly (a good weight lifting sesh, fast running or any type of relatively intensive…
