  • I was running into a similar problem with cycling. As spring would role around and I was getting back on the bike again, the two were leaving my legs just dead. What ended up working for me was a little was breaking up squats to heavy and light days, and going lighter around the days when I rode.
  • Way to go! I did that exact hike when I was out there 2 years ago, along with mountain biking in McDowell, it was a great time.
  • That's so awesome, I did one last year. I was going to say you bit off a tough one to do, but after looking through your goals, no sweat! I've done the Warrior Dash too, but what I liked about Spartan was the teamwork. There was pretty much no way of doing everything without helping each other.
  • Maybe at some point a shotgun for turkeys. My son was the one who got the hunting bug, and we have a xbow and a HandiRifle in 44 mag, but after we get some deer success I would like to try turkey's as well. Haven't shot the XDs 9 yet, but like the idea of the grip safety. Took my son to a range near us for his 12th bday…
  • Go Hawks!
  • After reading Rippetoe, I tried swapping out rows for power cleans. My hand position on the bar when it was on my chest was bad, and it ended up hurting my elbow. It took months for that to go away, that really sucked. So needless to say I'm not doing that anymore. I really try to do some good stretching after every…
  • Alot of the good Mathews bows are going to be north of $500. Where did your brother get his? If you go on the websites of the major bow makers (mathews, hoyt, pse), you can look up who carries them. Then take him to a real bow shop, not Gander or ****s. They will have a huge selection, all the extras, and people who really…
  • No, I don't. I recalculated my calorie number before I started and added in a moderate level of activity, which bumped it up a little. Now that cycling season is done, aside from lifting all I do is maybe run once a week, so no real reason to mess with that.
  • Just for comparison purposes, I am 5'11", and when I started my bulk, I weighed 175 lbs. My TDEE is around 2,500 calories. I am adding roughly 250 cal. a week, so I am doing 2,750 total, which puts me at a 1/2 pound a week. I don't track my food alot, but I have gained about 5 lbs since September, so that lines up fairly…
  • Yeah, I'll say cycling shorts, like you expected. Loose fitting shorts can bunch up and move around while you pedal, so that is the problem. I would look around either in the women's sections of a bike store, online store, etc, or also the mountain bike section. There are shorts that are two layers, bike shorts on the…
  • I got hit by a car in college, she turned in front of me and I flipped over the hood. Aside from some road rash I was OK, the gash in the top of my helmet showed me that it did its job. The good thing was she stopped, her insurance covered the replacement of my bike, plus a little extra (about $40 of that extra went to a…
  • Lots of great advice. The only thing I would add is that in addition to good biking shorts, pick up some chamois cream. The more time you send in the saddle, the more likely it will be that you will get some skin irritation. You will quickly figure out if you have some spots that are more easily irritated. So a quick coat…
  • My lift weights are somewhat close to yours, and I have been doing SL off and on for about a year and a half! So don't get down, you have made great progress. I seem to loose it easy, so if I have to take time off for being sick or out of town, I have to reset everything down. And in the summer with a little running and…
  • While purists still like pleats because they do serve a functional purpose, the trend is definitely towards flat front. Last year I picked up two BB suits (though an online reseller, I would not normally be able to afford their stuff) with flat front pants, and I think they look great. I feel like the key with flat front…
  • My wife and I did the warrior dash last year, so I agreed to do the Spartan race with a group of guys this year. It was definitely tougher that the warrior dash. Took us about 2 1/2 hours to complete the 5.2 mile course. The mud crawl I think was the toughest thing. Crawling on flat ground is one thing, but having to do…
  • Not familiar with that one, but I've done the Warrior Dash, and just got back from doing the Spartan Race this morning. If it is anything like those, then you will get crazy filthy. And since you will get soaking wet, wear nothing cotton, otherwise it will weigh a ton and will be hanging off of you. Clothes that are very…
  • I would agree with the comments from DopeItUp and MountainGirl1. I don't claim to be an expert, but I have read Starting Strength, and have watched Marc Rippetoe's videos on youtube to help me with my own form. He was a power lifter, and has also coached US olympic lifters, so he is very well regarded. I would strongly…
  • I have been trying to run once a week through this winter, I have been able to get out most weekends. The coldest was probably upper 20's. Did the treadmill at the gym once, don't want to go back. It's boring, I get too hot and sweaty, then have to get bundled up to go back out to the car, didn't like it at all. Never…
  • My wife and I did it last year, and already signed up again for next summer. We were in maybe the 5th or 6th wave when we did, and by the time we hit the course, there were sections that were a total sloppy mess. We had gotten some rain the in the days leading up to it, so that didn't help. We probably walked one-third of…
  • My wife and I did our first one this summer. We were in a fairly early wave, but even still ours had some water obstacles, plus we got a decent rain a few days before. The result was that the course was so muddy, that you couldn't even really run all of it, it was just too slick. I had not run in years, and worked up to…
  • Hawks fan here. Unsure of how our SC run will be this year, they have just been so inconsistent. That was cool you got that pic. Jamal has definately been the best pickup of that group they got during the summer.
  • You rock girl! You have worked hard for the progress you have made. Way to go!
  • First off, do not let anyone else there intimidate you when it comes to using free weights. My wife was a bit when she started going, now its no big deal to her. As you keep going, you will gain alot of confidence. When I see the occasional women lifting hard now, I want to say "way to go!" If the guys as your place don't…
  • Thanks for the comments. I will probably just start a slow transition and see how it goes, it won't be for a few months anyways. I know in the past when I have ridden even the morning following a lifting day, my legs feel a little dead. And that wasn't even lifting heavy like now. Maybe the key will be having a little time…
  • Started doing Stronglifts this winter, really like it and have enjoyed the results. I'm kind of thinking far ahead here, but for those of you who do other activities, how do you continue to include lifting? My main activity in the summer is cycling, good exercise and I just really enjoy it. So as spring rolls in, I will…
  • I have done a few in the past. I was never comptetive, it was more for fun and the challenge for me. The point about a wet suit is a good one, depending on water temps in your location. My thoughts: Swim - If you have never done an open water swim before, it is definately a different thing. Take it easy and try avoid…
