  • Just my opinion, but I don't think running will ruin your knees. I have had both knees replaced and I have never been a runner. It is arthritis that eats away at the cartilage, eventually requiring the surgery. Or possibly an injury. My brother-in-law is in his 70s and has been a life-long runner, yet he has had no knee…
  • Interesting conversation. I am caught between continuing to eat moderate carbs and increase plant-based foods, while reducing overall caloric intake. My daughter has done keto for a month and a half and she has lost almost 15 pounds. She eats only carbs from fruit and vegetables, but she eats higher protein. I've lost no…
  • Age and the reduction of hormones messes with the metabolism. At least, it does for women. I, also, find that I have difficulty eating within my boundaries. I love food and that makes it hard when you near retirement and everything slows down. Learning to track my intake was key. I measure everything and try to maintain my…
  • Been on WW Freestyle for three weeks and haven't lost a pound. I realized that the problem is not getting enough exercise since I left my job. I'm starting a new one on Monday, but I won't be on my feet as much as in the old job. So I began a new exercise plan yesterday. I'm having a rest day today (or just a rest meal)…
  • I'm having a rest day today and I'm eating Mexican. Definitely more calories.
  • Same here. I feel like I am constantly thinking about food. I'm either planning a meal, preparing a meal, eating a meal or cleaning up from a meal and then starting all over. Eating healthy and working out a deficit every day takes a fair amount of planning. Learning to eat differently is rough. We get used to just…
  • I try to keep my caloric intake to about 1400-1500 for the day. I really don't know how people can eat pizza, steak, and potatoes...etc and not go over, unless they are eating in excess of 2000 calories a day. If I'm extremely vigilant, I can splurge on something, but it really doesn't take much to push it over the…
  • I can totally identify with your predicament. I, too, have always been an evening and night muncher. I can eat a fairly low amount of calories during the day and sometimes even dinner, but soon after dinner, I get the munchies. I sometimes wake up during the night with a craving for something. Just being aware of it and…
  • Some of my salads can pack a lot of calories if I'm using salad as the entire meal. I will typically dice up chicken, cheese, hard-boiled egg, avocado, but I'm sparing with the dressing. Bacon is a treat I seldom use, but when I'm in the mood for a Cobb salad, I will toss it in with chicken and bleu cheese. Those calories…
  • Good post! I'm fine during the day, but I'm an evening grazer. Control the urge to snack in the evenings is the hardest thing for me to do. I have to agree with the cup of tea before bed idea. If I can keep my fingers busy doing some knitting or playing solitaire or something similar, I don't think about munching so much.…
  • Sounds like you are overdoing it. Let your body tell you what it needs. When it hurts, it's telling you that it needs to rest a little. It's better to work up to vigorous exercise at a slower pace. Your body will adjust, but maybe not as quickly as you would like. My knees got arthritis when I was in my 50s. By the time I…
  • I try to keep my calorie intake to around 1200-1300 because I'm short and not as active as I could be. I am cutting way back on carbs, so it requires an increase in proteins, vegetables, and fruits. I'm following WW Freestyle and most turkey, chicken, fish, eggs, vegetables, and fruits are free to eat as you wish. Proteins…
  • Eating too much sodium doesn't cause an increase in your weight from excess fat, but it can cause your body to retain fluid. That will add a pound or two of excess water weight. In most women, that goes up and down in relation to intake, hormones and menstrual cycle.

  • While I understand that breakfast can be an important meal for many, it isn't for some of us. I am not a breakfast eater, either. I have always worked evenings and I get home after midnight and by the time I do a few things and get to bed and to sleep, it's a sure thing I am going to sleep in until 9-10. I will get up and…
  • I don't keep track of the total amount of veggies I eat in a day except for logging them. Each veggie is different. Some, like avocados, are dense in fat calories, while others like celery are basically nil. I eat many vegetables a day. Some in the form of a mixed salad, some in stirfry, others I will cook independently,…
  • The younger you are and the less time you have been overweight the better. Serious weight loss will probably leave some loose skin, especially when lost quickly. The same is true if you are older. The older you get, the less elasticity your skin will have. I'm losing approx 30 pounds and I'm older, so I expect that this…
  • I find that a lot of restaurants have items listed in the MFP database. I had to guesstimate last week after attending a taco bar birthday bash for someone. I did the best I could and then forgot about it. Next day I was back on track.
  • My daughter has been following keto for about 5 weeks and she is down 13 pounds. She is short, but is pretty physically active. She works out, hikes and runs a little. That is a good amount for her in that time.
  • I believe in setting realistic goals. I would love to be skinny and be able to hold it forever. Realistically, it probably won't happen. I have a long-term goal and a short-term goal. My short-term goal is designed to allow me to reach a goal and reset it frequently. It gives me the positive motivation I need to be able to…
  • Salsa, dijon or honey mustard, pico de gallo, Thai sweet chili sauce, pickle relish, and hummus!
  • I'm not doing keto, but my daughter is doing it. She has lost 12-13 pounds in a bit over a month. I'm doing WW Freestyle and logging faithfully, as well as MFP weighing and logging. My weight loss is slower, but it is moving steadily downward. I don't care if it takes months or a couple of years. I think most programs will…
  • That is an awesome success story! Congrats. Very well-done!
  • Mini-goal for this month is to lose 5 pounds. My son is getting married in a month, so I would like to be well on into some weight loss.
  • Mine is a small success, as I've just hit one week on WW Freestyle. I won't weigh until Sunday morning and I'm pretty sure any loss at this point is just water weight. However, I feel less bloated and puffy. Also, I have not felt hungry. I am finding plenty to eat. It will no doubt get repetitive, but I'm OK with that.
  • Congrats!! That is awesome! Anything under 6.0 is within normal limits, I think. You literally cut yours in half! That is really great! And you are out of danger of getting nasty things like macular degeneration, peripheral neuropathy, limb loss, kidney failure...etc! Well-done!
  • In my opinion, one has to do more exercise when eating 1600 calories a day. Just add one or two workouts a week and cut a few calories and that should create a deeper deficit.
  • I'm a week into using WW Freestyle and I can honestly say I have not been hungry. I do admit that I still have a few weak moments where I crave something I have given up, but mostly I am satisfied. I love fresh fruit and vegetables, so I eat them in abundance. Hard-boiled eggs are good to add protein and few calories, yet…
  • For me, it's a gym membership, time spent planning, cooking and logging meals. I also have gone to using organic, fresh, whole foods and it is definitely more expensive, but an excellent investment. I hope to invest in some kick-butt, well-fitting new clothes soon.
  • Trader Joe's jicama sticks, celery and carrot sticks dipped in hummus, many salads with a hard-boiled egg, lots of apples, fish like ahi tuna, salmon or halibut, Outshine fruit bars, veggie chips (if I have to cheat), fat-free half and half in my coffee, Asian hot and sour soup, veggie omelets and sometimes shrimp or…
