It depends on you, really. When I went vegetarian 30+ years ago it was like flipping light switch. I went veg instantly, once I'd made the decision. The transition to vegan has taken longer with fits and starts along the way, and I'm still not 100% there. I don't eat milk or egg directly, but I know a little dairy slips in…

I've read that soy milk is a good alternative, but my baking is limited to the occasional pan of vegan cornbread so I can't vouch for it myself.

This is the truth. One day won't ruin you, as long as you get right back to work. The trap is that one day can turn into two, then a week, and then a month. A year later you wake up and wonder where these 50 pounds came from, trust me, I know.

My treadmill matches up almost exactly with what MFP says I'm burning. So, I just record my walks and don't worry about it.

I'm a diabetic, and caffeine will raise your blood sugar like any other stimulant. So, I've switched to one pot of half-caff, and if I want more I make decaf. I think some coffee is fine, even beneficial. If you're not having a specific problem with it, drink up. However, I do know one woman who put herself in the ER with…

I love my Kindle as well. It's older version keyboard version, but I read on it constantly. Really, the ability to increase the font size lets me read for pleasure again. It's been a real Godsend for me. The new lighted one is intriguing, I may just get that one. Edit to Add: Too many people think of books as nothing but…

I feel for you. We all want big losses and NOW! I stalled for a month before dropping another pound or so this week. It takes dedication and patience. I can vouch for how well this site works, but you have to stick with it. Good luck.

I wonder who are all these vegans who want to cram their lifestyle down other people's throats. After 30 years of being a vegetarian or vegan, I've never met one. Not one of my real life friends has ever met one either, but they're absolutely freakin' everywhere according to the internet.

I'm going to be .... 190 lbs, I hope, kinda stuck in a plateau here lately.

My treadmill has a weight function, which I keep up to date, but not age. It still seems to correlate pretty closely with MFP.
-
I guess it depends on the equipment you use. MFP agrees with my treadmill within a few percentage points.

BBC Horizon 2012: Eat, Fast and Live Longer, on YouTube. Is this the program? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfna7nV7WaM

When the girl I was talking to at Best Buy didn't remember Mt. St. Helens blowing up. It happened on my 20th birthday back in 1980.

Plus McDonalds' own people had warned them that the coffee was too hot.

She won't win unless they pay for her to go away. The government allows labels to say "fat free" if one serving has 0.5 grams of fat or less. As long as they're following the government's standard they don't have anything to worry about. Plus, she's stupid.

I'm with you there. I can usually resist sweets, but sometimes I just have to have something crunchy and salty.

Check the Amazon link. It's still free there. Also, here's a list of Amazon's vegan books sorted by price. There are a number of freebies available. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st?keywords=vegan&qid=1345232192&rh=n%3A133140011%2Ck%3Avegan&sort=price

Yes, there aren't a lot of choices there. I used to drink my coffee with creamer, until I started watching the fat in my diet. I was getting more fat from coffee creamer than anything else, so I stopped using it. It really only took me a couple days to get used to drinking it black again.
-
I drink it black now, and I switched to Lite Coffee which has half the caffeine. That's about as far as I'm willing to compromise.

Most, though not all, unprocessed vegan foods are naturally low in fat. As long as you avoid packaged and prepared food (still a problem for me) you'll avoid a lot of fat.
-
I eat carbs whenever I want them, as long as it's within my calorie goal.

Any stimulant, like caffeine, can raise you blood sugar. However, unless you're a diabetic with blood sugar issues, and you're sensitive to the effect, I wouldn't worry about it. Edit to add: also ignore all the talk about insulin being involved in weight gain. It's nonsense.

I follow a low-fat diet. Specifically I follow "Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes." It's a low-fat, plant-based, whole foods diet that emphasizes low-glycemic foods. It has really helped me lose weight and control my blood sugar. I try to limit myself to 20g of fat a day. I don't add fat to anything really,…

I've been vegetarian for 30 years and mostly vegan for 7 months. My diet has gotten better over time, but I've still got a ways to go. The biggest problem is that I'm not really much of a cook, and the stuff that's easy to prepare is often the least healthy. I'm working on it though.
-
That's not true.

>Be honest, why do you work out? To help lose weight, but even more so to strengthen my heart. Diabetics have an significantly increased chance of dieing from a heart attack, even if they've got good glucose control, and low cholesterol, so I do what I can to have a healthy heart.
-
Very easy to understand, and the plan itself is pretty simple. Sticking to it might take some adjustment and commitment, just like any other significant change.

Multiple times, it's sitting right here on my bookshelf.

I had no difficulty at all in giving up meat. It was like turning off a light switch. I quit and walked away. It's been much harder to give up processed junk and eat an overall healthier diet. I'm doing a lot better than I used to, but it's still a work in progress. Oh, and for the best way to go about eating a plant-based…

Been there! I stepped on the scale for the first time after having a year long relapse into old habits. I'd gained 40 pounds, and I've taken 6 months to get rid of them again. You can do it, just take it one day, even one meal at a time. Slow and steady really does win.
