  • 10 years ago, before perimenopause for sure, I did the low glycemic diet. I cut virtually all highly processed carbs. I did eat whole grain breads, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice, and I ate plenty of fruit. Sugar (in pastries, etc) was a special occasion treat only. I dropped like 25 lbs in two months. But I felt like I…
  • Ahhh there are so many things going on here--the expectations upon women to look good (especially in the south where our worth is often weighed by our appearance--yes still in 2016!), the media's very false image of beauty (extremely slim, or the even more difficult to achieve large bust, slim-hipped silhouette. That one…
  • This should be required reading for anyone who is at a healthy weight. Thanks! Thanks for acknowledging that acquiring that "next level" of fitness/body will require an amount of commitment not everyone will do or should want to do! I read posts where people are "shamed" because they are not willing to so sacrifice! It is…
  • I know this is an old thread, but. . . . Does anyone know if there is a MFP group for those lifting heavy using Dumbbells? Going to the gym doesn't work in my schedule most days, so I am at home with n a similar situation as OP. I have purchased additional weights as needed. The only problem I have run into is getting…
  • I am totally okay with my thighs getting larger if the result is less ab fat!!! Muscles are beautiful. Thanks for all who posted. Informative!
  • Thx. I'm being as consistent as I can with my schedule (usually can hit three times a week if I work at it. I'm shooting for four.). I've also changed up my routine a good bit--had a trainer write a series of workouts for each group of muscles, so now I can push harder than when I was doing full body three times a week. I…
  • So how much fat can a women expect to recomp during any given time? Eating at maintenance and lifting. For 3 months. For 6 months. Etc. I know it is not an exact science, but how much change is to be expected? I'm about 10 pounds over where I think I should be, and I'd like to lose about 3-4% body fat (I am at 26%). Are we…
  • This! I lost nearly 45 lbs eating a small breakfast and lunch and then having a regular sized dinner at 8 pm. The hard part was the big space between lunch and dinner. I had to fight the urge to eat large snacks. But other than personal hunger patterns, meal timing won't matter.
  • Interesting. I'm googling this. Hope I don't get something weird!
  • I like running and swimming and biking, and there was a time in my life when I loved classes that include dance. But right now my schedule right now makes it difficult to do classes. I too dislike lifting and find it boring. I do it because I know it is important to health, and for the nice shape it gives my body. I wish…
  • Seriously, black cohosh works for this. I felt a difference after the first dose (and I was not taking it for that) and when I recently stopped it I felt the reverse effect.
  • I tried black cohosh and it was great for hot flashes and also made me feel better over all and regulated my now crazy periods and even brought some sex drive back (!!!), but it makes me retain fluid like crazy. And that is bad for raising blood pressure, etc. plus it makes the scale go up and just makes me feel funny. So,…
  • I have had my belly balloon up almost 6 inches after Chinese food, and I've never had any kind of surgery! But that kind of bloat is not what bothers me the most (it is annoying for sure). What I hate is the jiggly squishy fat that blankets my whole mid section. It is not even really a belly, it is all around! I never had…
  • Your stats are very similar to mine. 5'2" and 134. (Although I am a bit older, so that does change things a bit) So I will comment on my experience. For me, if I am working out 5-6 days a week (at least 3 days of cardio) for 45 minutes or so, then I will maintain at around 1700 calories. More, and I WILL gain, regardless…
  • I have the same problem. In for the answers.
  • Looking in the mirror I can trick myself into not seeing the fat. I can catch just the right angle, suck it in, etc. But when I see a picture, I know. Pictures don't lie!
  • What would you say your sodium intake level was to drop your BP? Mine is also sometimes borderline, although it seems to be reactive. (If I am chilling at home it will be normal, but just about anything seems to make it go up). I find it very difficult to keep my sodium below 2000. Most days mine is 2200-2400, sometimes…
  • Exactly what I was saying! Having small children is a special kind of stress, especially psychologically and emotionally. But I have found that the busy-ness and time crunch is much worse now. For instance, I spent over an hour tutoring my 14 year old last night. (Saves us lots of money if we don't have to hire a tutor,…
  • Hang in there ladies. Being Mom is difficult regardless of the age of your kids. New and different challenges at every stage! Remember--mostly healthy choices. Most of the time. Nobody's perfect, and for everything there is a season.
  • No! No! No! Y'all stop saying those ugly things! Sigh. I think you're right though.
  • Yes!!!! Basically I am very lean everywhere but my tummy, (well, I have curves in my hips and a bust to match, but my arms and legs are slim.). But I can't budge the belly fat, and when I gain it goes straight to my abs.
  • I started on here6 years ago next month. The MFP plan worked perfectly for me. I lost 40 lbs. but sometime in the last 4 years the hormones shifted and the weight loss/maintenance rules changed. I've gained 20 lbs and it feels like starvation is the only way to budge the weight. And when I go back to eating normally (and…
  • This evening, (Thursday) I am going to pretend it is a "W" day! Wthursday! Like, the "w" is silent!
  • I just cleaned out the attic and found the jeans that were the last straw for me. I put them on one morning and could barely sit, they were so tight! When I pulled them out of the box yesterday, I was amazed. They were huge. Can't believe I got that big!! I almost kept them just because. But all the fat clothes got donated…
  • If I'm hungry, I eat them back. (If I am eating at deficit, I am hungry and need those calories because my goal is 1200. When I go back to maintenance at around 1500-1600, I may not always need them. So I will use hunger as a guide then.)
  • I know exactly what you mean. I got down to a weight that was in the lower half of the BMI for my height a few years ago. It still was 10 lbs heavier than my weight as a young adult. Anyway, my body looked great, but when I look back at pictures, I realize that my face looked a bit worn and haggard. I now hope to maintain…
  • At 160 lbs, you don't have to eat 1200 cals a day to lose. You can eat more and still keep a smaller deficit, and hopefully that will keep you from binging and ruining your deficit and ending up in surplus. Ending up in surplus is why you have gained. Go back to MFP settings and make sure you have entered your info…
  • 5'2" and trying to re-lose 7 lbs. (maintenance is hard!) I was successful the first time around, and I will be again!!!!
  • ^^^^ @VivienneBorchers is on the right track here. You likely don't need to lose more weight. Here is something else to consider--we don't get to choose where our body stores fat, and abs may be where yours likes to store it. I got down to a very low BMI (healthy but in low end of range) also, and still had belly fat.…
  • It is different for everyone. I seem to lose all over, rather than just in one area. So I kept my basic shape, but it just got smaller. Boobs got smaller, but so did my torso, so I ended up with the same cup size as before. And I definitely see it in my face. That is as important to me as the body. I really dislike my face…
