Cheating?
Is it really cheating if you accidentally go over your calories one day, omit the food that caused you to over on that day, and add it to the next day?

Confusion about calories - what am I missing?
An average 150 pound person burns around 60 calories an hour while sleeping. If that person slept for 24 hours, that would be 1440 calories burned. Technically, if that person was fed 1440 calories by IV, they would be maintaining weight, right? Yes, I know this is ridiculous. But hear me out. Since most people sleep eight…

Kids' eating disorders?
Started to write this on another thread, but didn't want to "hijack" it. But it made me think about my niece and nephew. I worry about my niece. She's 11 years old, weighs 132 pounds, and is about 5' tall and big boned. She has stretch marks on her inner thighs. I've educated her about calories (using ME, not her, as an…

What REALLY inspired you to lose weight?
For a very special event in 2007, I was inspired to lose 20 pounds. After the event, I immediately gained it back. Then I gained another 20 pounds. At this point, I bought a dress that I LOVED as inspiration to lose back at least the 20 extra pounds I gained. Instead, I gained another ten. The dress went to the back of my…

Who is my avatar?
I just randomly clicked an old picture of a movie star, but don't know who she is. Ava Gardner? Vivien Leigh? Anyone know?

Dinner tonight with some new friends
This was a "meet-up" dinner; four ladies (including me). One lady is spending hundreds of dollars going to a doctor and doing the Atkins diet. Says she has lost 55 pounds since January, at which time she weighed over 300 pounds. Another one is going back to Weight Watchers "for the fifth time" tomorrow, so she planned to…

Yay! My first kettle bell was delivered today!
I took my first kettle bell class at the Y Monday, and ordered mine online after the class, and it's already here! Okay, so it cost nearly $50, yikes. I've been lurking on Craigslist and other advertising sites for a couple of months looking for one after using them for my group PT training class. No cheap kettle bells. I…

Kettlebells - Where is it in the database?
When I googled it, MFP showed up in the search with a calculator where you enter your weight and the number of minutes, but I can't find it in the database. Thanks.

Water retention
Just thought I would post this to give everyone a chuckle!

Today I crossed my legs
Really crossed them without feeling totally uncomfortable with one foot sticking way up in the air and my hips screaming for relief. I haven't even tried to do so in several weeks, and it just happened naturally today. I am totally amazed and delighted.

Is it a journey, a lifestyle change, or just using common sense?
A journey sounds very cumbersome, as does a lifestyle change. I know someone who dips her French fries in mayonnaise and can't figure out why she is overweight. My theory is that everyone knows why they are overweight but can't own up to it. Including ME.

Why do so many people ignore calories burned with exercise in CICO?
I don't get it. Writer says, "I'm exercising 4,000 calories a day and eating 2,000 calories but I'm not losing weight" and the answer is almost always CICO. Then there's the accusations that the poster is not logging calories accurately, not weighing the food, and that even though they claim to exercise, it's always…

Who knew pinto beans have so many calories?
I ate nearly two cups of pinto beans today, and it's over 300 calories!!!! BUT I must say, I haven't felt hungry all day. In fact, if I can eat a banana for dinner, I'm good. I guess all beans have a lot of calories, but wow, if they can keep you from feeling hungry, the calories are so worth it!

Does eating less really make your stomach shrink?
I've heard this for years. But I do find that the less I eat, the less I want to eat. Anyone have some scientific evidence for or against this?

But I don't have TIME to exercise!
I hear and read this all the time. Whenever someone says, "I don't have time to (fill in the blank)', it just means it's not a priority. Exercise isn't a priority to those who don't make it a priority. Do you have time to watch television? You can exercise while watching it instead of sitting on the couch. Do you have time…

How do restaurants manage to pack in so many calories and so much sodium????
I don't get it. At IHOP, a two egg breakfast without meat is 860 calories and 2,060 mg of sodium. Look at other chains - Chili's meal with the least calories is a salad at almost 700 (without the dressing). Does anyone here work at a restaurant and can explain just what is done to make eating out nearly impossible for…

Losing weight from external motivation?
I'm just curious if anyone has lost weight and KEPT IT OFF because (1) another person either bugged or encouraged you into doing so; or (2) you got into any of the myriad of weight loss programs which costs a lot of money; or (3) because of a special event coming up such as a wedding, or a family or class reunion. Or any…

It was easier to quit smoking than this!
I quit smoking nearly 11 years ago and have had an up and down weight problem ever since. Quitting smoking was EASY! I read that once you quit, the nicotine was out of your system within 72 hours, and they were right. After that, it was a year of seasons to get out of the habit. I was miserable the first two days, then it…

Does anyone else over-log/under-log calories/exercise?
Tried to make the headline short, but here's the longer version: Does anyone else overestimate the calories they have consumed but underestimate the calories they burned through exercise? I'm not a very trusting person, and even when the package of pistachios says "1/4 cup = 160 calories", I eat just a little under 1/4 cup…

Suggestions for digital food scale?
I have one, but it's small, makes no allowance for the weight of the container, and you can't read it if the container is larger than the flat scale. Anyone have one they love at a reasonable price?

Ten minutes
I was in the room waiting for my ophthalmologist to come in and noticed a free corner behind the chair. Ten minutes of walking in place instead of sitting in the chair! How many ten minutes can you find?

Thank you, MyFitnessPal.com!!!
My high weight was a couple of ounces under 170. From October until January 18, the day before I discovered MFP, I managed to get down to 160 - ten pounds, or a little less than three pounds a month. In the two weeks since I started logging in food and exercise, I have lost nearly seven pounds. I feel better and more…

Quit smoking in 2004, gained a ton, ready to quit this cycle!
All my adult life, my weight was around 110 top. I'm short and small-boned and could eat and drink anything I wanted. I never exercised. I had a couple of babies, gained weight, then lost it within six weeks. Then, after 35 years of smoking, I quit. Bam! Within two months I gained nearly 30 pounds. I was gradually working…

Looking for people over 60 to share tips with!
It seems like most of the people here are a lot younger than us, so I would like to be friends with a few people in my age group. I am 62 and have about 45-50 pounds to lose.
