Calling awesome 40-something women!
Hey there, awesome women in your forties! do any of you have a photo to share of you doing something awesome and showing off your crazy in shape bodies? Bonus points if you are 5 ft 6 in tall and about 25% body fat give or take, that's my goal. I am 42 and reached my peak of fitness last summer, but have since fallen off…

Pulse oximeter
I've just been gifted a pulse Oximeter. Is there any way I can use this as a fitness tool? I'm not sure what the data can do outside of medical conditions.

Lifting soreness
I'm on week 3 of a 5*5 lifting routine. It's a quick and simple routine, my goal is to make it hard. I'm being cautious starting out after not lifting for a few years and haven't gotten to a challenging weight yet. I get so sore the next day I have to take Advil to not be limping and crazy sore. Any suggestions? I want to…

Headaches :(
I have been waking up with a headache almost everyday for the past 3 to 4 weeks. I can't figure out how to make them go away. I am definitely not dehydrated. I don't have any muscle soreness. I started using a mouth guard for night grinding about a week and a half ago it hasn't made any difference. these headaches are in…

Parabins?
What's the consensus? Are they really so bad, or is it all marketing to our fears? My face wash and moisturizer have parabins in them. Should I make the effort to get something else or not worry about it?

Are my water drinking habits the reason I am always hungry?
I recently heard eating challenge contestants stretch their stomachs out by drinking large amounts of water. I am always thirsty and gulp 16-26 ounces of water in one swig. I usually down a litre in a few minutes at a time and drink about 2-4 litres a day. I also happen to be hungry all the time. Until now I assumed the…

fitness nutrition?
Edit: Thank you all- I realized I started this thread in a tone I didn’t intend. If anyone has any nutrition/eating gems they’d like to share for their sport of choice, I’d love to see some of them posted here. That’s the dialogue I’m hoping to start here. Sorry to mislead.

S-T-R-E-S-S
I just got word of a big change in my life happening in about 3 week. It's a good thing, but a stressful thing. 3 hours into knowing about it and I've already started stress eating and I'm having a hard time concentrating. The stressful stuff hasn't even started yet! What are some of your healthy strategies for coping with…

Default vs. Personalized Heart Rate Zones (an example)
For those who are into heart rates and charts, I wanted to share these Garmin readouts of time spent in heart rate zones of 2 bike rides. The rides were a few weeks apart. I rode with the same group of people, same weather, same bike, same distance, same elevation in the same area (though different routes). My average and…

Cross Country Ski Bindings...
I miss my SNS bindings from the 90's. They snapped on and off in a second with no bending and my Solomon boots were super comfy. I got new touring skis last year and apparently my only option was NNN bindings. You have to bend over, you can't use a ski pole and they are hard to turn with numb fingers (I have Reynaud's)…

Help me figure out my shoulder pain...
A week ago I took a tumble and landed hard on my shoulder. It was all I could do to stand up and shake it out. Within 15 minutes it was down to a 3-4 on the pain scale, and went down to a 1-2 since then. I have no bruising, no visible swelling, no tender spots, and massage does nothing. I can throw boxing punches at about…

Yo-Yo Weight Warnings
Back in the day I remember seeing a lot of warnings in magazine articles and whatnot warning us of the dangers of yo-yo dieting. They argued things like…fat cells never go away, so all those extra fat cells you had when you were fat stay in your body forever, trying to fill themselves up with fat again. And every time you…

Help me find the right step tracker
I want to give a pedometer to a friend who just started walking on a treadmill. This is her first fitness program. Her treadmill doesn't have any distance features. I'd like to give her a pedometer as a Christmas gift. It should be able to customize stride length. It should be slim and feminine and preferably worn on the…

Suggestions for setting Garmin Connect Custom Heart Rate Zones?
Garmin Connect defaults to 5 heart rate zones. I recently had an Athletic Performance Profile Physiology test and want to enter my new custom heart rate zones into Garmin. However, the lab I used prefers a 4-zone method. Assuming you can't eliminate a zone from Garmin's settings, how would you add a zone? Would you add in…

Healthy pumpkin pie alternative?
I want to make a pumpkin dessert just for myself. I don't want to make a whole pie because I'd eat the whole thing and while the pumpkin itself is pretty healthy, I don't need all those calories that comes with the crust. Any ideas on a healthy alternative? Pie in a microwaved mug? Make it protein-heavy somehow?

Virgin Pulse and mandatory workforce wellbeing programs
What are your thoughts? A good friend of mine is required by her employer to accumulate a certain number of “points” via an online program to maintain her health insurance benefit. She is a well-paid, highly educated professional in the peak of her career (US). Her employer employs “unskilled” workers along with those…

physiology lab testing for training zones
I'm getting a Athletic Performance Profile from a physiology lab. It will test my VO2 max and establish personalized heart rate training zones using a combination of blood lactate and ventilatory values. I've never done anything like this before. I am super excited, but also nervous! Any suggestions on how to prepare would…

ankle and shin strengthening exercises (for Nordic skate skiing)?
I am taking a skate skiing clinic in a couple of months and I want to be physically ready. I searched the web for conditioning ideas, but everything I saw focused on endurance, core, thigh, and upper body- all of which I am covering in my current work out routine. I've only skate skied a couple of times before and it was…

Dove Promises
Back in the day, I enjoyed these little treats. Pre-wrapped chocolates just the right size to curb a craving without eating a ton of calories. And each wrapper had a delightful message inside like, "You are enough" or "love abounds." Now the messages say things like "eat more chocolate" or "buy Dove products" or whatever…

Why am I afraid of starving?
I can't go anywhere without an energy bar in my purse. I keep emergency food in the car, and pack a bag of "car snacks" for every road trip. I go to work every day with a giant lunch and my kitchen is always overstocked. If I see "free" food anywhere, I lose control. Even on an organized bike ride, I have to stuff my…

fluctuations in resting heart rate?
Thoughts? For those of you wearing fitness trackers, does your rhr change or stay the same? Mine has been pretty much the same for over a year (since I started wearing a tracker), but has gone up 4 bpm a month ago and stayed there. I'm not concerned or anything, but it did spark my curiosity about how consistent these…

How would you train between centuries?
I am a couple of big 2-day bike rides later this summer: Day 1: 105 miles Day 2: 58 miles Day 3-11: –this is where I need help!- Day 12: 105 miles Day 13: 82 miles I’m confident in my training up until day 1. And it’s not unusual for me to do a couple of centuries a summer, but they are usually a few months apart. What…

Bicycling Gender gap?
It's obvious more men ride bikes than women (75% vs. 25% in the US according to the link below). The articles in the link below look into women who don't ride and why. I am a woman who rides a bike, so obviously I don't identify with the group of focus. I'm curious to hear from real people- are these reasons true? The…

Brown bag lunch ideas?

Cyclists: bone-conduction earphones while riding?
I am debating buying a "smart" helmet with bone-conduction earphones built into the straps (Cronos) or a standalone set (AfterShokz), but I can't decide which is a better choice. The helmet appeals to me because it would be less conspicuous, but a standalone headset would be higher quality and more versatile. Anyone have…

labdoor or consumer lab?
Which is better for independent 3rd party testing? I try to compare supplements, etc. but both companies seem to review different product manufacturers/brands. Neither seem to review a comprehensive sample of brands or are real specific about how they pic which products they test. How do I know which offers a more reliable…
