TDEE question
I've been messing about with my numbers for a while now, trying to find the right level of cals in and out. It's growing really quite frustrating. I think the basic problem is that I don't know how to judge my TDEE. I have a relatively sedentary job (I'm a university lecturer, so I sit about at computer a fair bit, but…

how do you feel about your fat pics?
I'm approaching my one year anniversary on MFP, and I know there'll be some pressure on me to produce the obligatory 'before' and 'during' photos. I'm really ambivalent about this. There's part of me that wants the 'wow, look how far you've come' responses. But there's such shame and disgust attached to those pre photos. I…

why do we have bad runs?
I've had a week of feeling a bit like Usain Bolt (albeit in slow motion)... And then today... Blurgh. Really nasty run. Leaden legs, upset stomach, couldn't speed up at all... just plodded round and flopped in a heap at the end. Why do these 'bad runs' happen?

Rubbish when running hills
Are there techniques I should be applying to hill running that I'm just missing? I live in a rolly bit of countryside, and I've never been one to shy away from running up and down them. I'm just starting doing some hill repeats. The challenge I have is that my stride length seems to shorten till I'm more or less shuffling…

leg strength - not squats or lunges
could anyone recommend some leg strengthening moves that don't involve squats or lunges. I've tried and persisted with these, but i have enduring knee problems (rooted in hypermobile joints) that mean squats and lunges cause considerable knee pain. i run, and have quite strong legs but want them to be stronger to support…

Tapering?
I'm doing my first half next Sunday. So, this taper business.... Don't really know what I'm doing, and getting lots of contradicatory info from various sites and programmes. I'm about to go off and put in a longish run (8 miles, I think). Then I thought I'd do 4 miles tomorrow, 6 on Tuesday, 4 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday,…

Dancing, gardening and jacob's ladder
These are things I've seen come up as 'substitute' activities talked about in various places. If zumba etc are going in 'gymnastics', might dancing fit there too? Jacob's ladder - would that maybe fit in running? Gardening, I can't think of a place for at all. Are these activities that might be included, or not? (These…

Susanne Ernan
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/07/800-pound-bride-susanne-eman_n_1498377.html I've been puzzling over this for a few days now. There's a photo in the slideshow of this article, of Susanne Ernan's fiance feeding her. Is this just another acceptable choice, do you think? Or is there an element of abuse / domestic…

Has anyone run the Barcelona Marathon?
I'm seriously tempted to make this my first marathon, in March 2013. Going to Barcelona is my 'when I hit my weight loss target' reward, so going to run a marathon there seems a particularly cool thing to do. I wondered what people's experience of the race was?

The shakes when running
I did my first 13+ mile run today. It was slow, but apart from that it felt good. Except that I got shivery at about the 10mile mark. Lasted about 2 miles. Any idea what that was? Should I be concerned about it, or is it just one of those things?

Sinus infection and running?
Could I get a bit of advice please? I've had a summer cold. This has settled into a sinus infection. (I get these a lot after a cold.) The sinus infection in turn is making me cough a lot. I don't think the infection is on my chest it's more (sorry for the yucky detail) that the sinus nasties are kind of choking me up. I'm…

About the group
Well, I've seen one too many threads in which feminists are being pressed to 'defend' their position, and are described as outmoded, hate-filled, harridans etc etc. I thought it might be a good idea for us to have a place to huddle, practice our spells and incantations, and generally mutter about the state of the world.…

So.... Do you think fat is still a feminist issue?
So, way back in 1978, Susie Orbach suggested we give up 'dieting', suggesting it was one more tool of objectification and commodification of the female body. Does her argument remain valid in 2012?

Running cal estimates - what do you do?
I'm reading quite contradictory things about the best way to estimate calorie burn for running. Some articles suggest HRM is best, others suggest that a distance / weight based calculation is more accurate. What do you use?

Runners - garmin vs polar?
I have a polar FT7. By and large it's been fine (though I do have occasional issues with it dropping mid way through a workout). I've been toying with getting a garmin with gps and hrm for running though, and wondered what your experience of this has been? I'd like something that could do the job of tracking mileage as…

Could some kind running friend....
Explain to me in really simple, jargon free terms, how to do speed work? I don't *get* what all those runnersworld articles are telling me to do!! And when I've tried to do what they say, I end up feeling a bit of a failure. So basically, at the minute, I just point myself at the steepest hill I can find (not many round…

Running - tummy troubles
What have you found to be the best way to avoid getting stomach cramps etc when running? I've had several 'desperately dash for the loo' experiences lately, and it's starting to make me nervous on my longer runs.

Runners - what weight training?
I was wondering what kind of weight training most of my running friends were doing - particularly those of you running significant distances. How often, how many reps, how heavy (to failure?), what kinds of moves?

Lifting advice
I run and I cycle, and my legs and bottom are, without question, in the best shape of all of me at the moment. I lift heavy, but am pretty certain that squats, and to a lesser degree deadlifts, are contributing significantly to knee pain. Do you think it will be reasonable to restrict myself to upper body lifting, till I…

cycling with dogs
Just wondering if anyone cycles with their hound, and if so how you do it safely? The dog I'm thinking of is very fit and healthy - good hips, runs with me already and is full of beans. She's nearly 2. Opinions welcome - my biggest concern here is I don't want to hurt my dog!

Elliptical issues
I've been struggling with shin splints on and off since I started running, and I am hypermobile, so also have rather dodgy knees. I wondered if anyone else has found that this might be being exacerbated by the elliptical? I didn't feel i could run yesterday, so put in a half hour on the elliptical last night, and today…

People who run with their dogs? (tiny bit icky)
I want to take one of my dogs out running with me. But I have a concern. What on earth do you do with the poop if you have to scoop? I don't fancy running along, dangling a plastic bag with me. And I'm just not the kind of person who could leave it lying there. There are very few poo bins (or any other kind of bins) in the…

Bike for daughter - advice please?
My daughter's outgrown her bike, and I'm looking for a new one for her. She's about 4 ft 10, and 10 years old. She can ride my bike (a 'normal' size lady's one - 18inch frame I think, and 26 inch wheels) if we put the seat down low, and can touch the ground, but she looks a bit 'overbiked' on it. Would you go for something…

Build to 200 situps challenge

HRM and resting heart rate?
Can your HRM give a reasonably accurate reading of resting heart rate? I've measured my BP and heart rate previously, and know it's been getting lower and lower as I've got fitter. While lying in bed this morning, just out of curiosity, I thought I'd test it using my HRM - and it measured at 48. So basically, as a fat (but…

Running downhill
My regular run (3 miles, or 4 miles, depending on a little variation I can chuck in there) is quite hilly. At the end of the run, there's quite a steep downhill, and without fail on the downhill, I experience some discomfort - my back, my knees, I just feel a little jarred. While I do go a little faster, I don't up my pace…

Vicious Vikings row the world!
Hi everyone. Here's the place to post your daily results, and chat about your hopes for this month. I'm Jane, and I'll do my best to keep on top of your posts, keep the spreadsheet up to date, and generally be fabulous. Spreadsheet will be ready very soon, and I'll post it to this thread. I'm happy for you to enter data…

How do you count the weights you use?
When people say stuff like 'I squat with a hundred pounds', is it usual to count the bar weight, or not? For instance, I'm trying to get decent form on my squats. I use 2 x 10kg (so 44lb) on a 45lb bar. Is that 44lb or 89lb?
