I did my first 13+ mile run today. It was slow, but apart from that it felt good. Except that I got shivery at about the 10mile mark. Lasted about 2 miles.

Any idea what that was? Should I be concerned about it, or is it just one of those things?

it was probably the wall. my understanding is that's what gatorade is really great for. put that in your bottle for longer runs, the carbs and electrolytes should help.

I have no idea what it means but I sometimes get a momentary chill when running. Its happened during halfs, it happened during my 5 miler at the weekend and it happened during a marathon when I was adequately fuelled and hydrated throughout.

    Personally I wouldn't be worried.

^^^^^ This. Dehydration and heat exhaustion most likely. Drink more water and eat adequate sodium.

I carry water, and drank all the way round, and I had jelly beans, which I had in little handfuls from about half way round. Not enough? Accordng to my HRM I did burn just over 2000 cals, so I'm guessing fuel was necessary (I know a lot of people don't worry till they're going a bit further than half marathon distance, but because I'm slow and heavy, I kind of assumed I would need it).

El Rap nice to know this happens even to a runner as fit and impressive as you! That does reassure me quite a bit. :-)

I should stress it wasn't dramatic, it didn't stop me from running on. But my jaw was going, and I did feel shivery all over.

I don't have an answer, I just want to say YAY YOU! 13+ miles is incredibly awesome as far as I am concerned. And I wanted to ask if that was your leg in your profile pic, because it's gorgeous. I want legs like that!

Thank you! I feel pretty incredible. Yes, that's my leg. I put it up as a bit of a joke, but kind of like looking at them. Not bad for a fat chick, I say. (If deathly pale!) I owe those legs to running. :-)

You've lost 117 lbs and run the distance of a half marathon. You also have incredible legs. I'm thinking you are judging yourself way too harshly by calling yourself a fat chick!

OK, water is not enough to handle dehydration properly, You can get sports drinks with or without calories which have electrolytes in - I use High 5 tablets in water when I dont want fuel in my drink, and 2:1 when I do.

You typically need fuel after 1 hr of running - about 1 gel (80 cals) every 20-30 minutes depending on effort and conditions.
