Speed or distance goals
Hi everyone Just wondered if anyone has any current specific goals with their swimming? I have in the last day or so set two... 1) To do the across the lake swim (Lake Taupo in New Zealand) in February 2014 (4.2km) 2) To compete in the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games in Melbourne April 2014. Hopefully this…

Coming back after kidney infection
Has anyone had a serious kidney infection and then returned to exercise and good eating? I am beginning to feel semi alive after 8 days laid pretty low. Have had minimal appetite, only really managing a few bits of tomato on toast in the last 5 days. I have lost 5 pounds, which isn't drastic but at 5'4" and now 103 pounds…

Best foods when you are very sick with zero appetite
What are some good foods to try to eat when you are sick? I have had a kidney infection that has gone systemic and I haven't been able to even look at food for over 48 hours (drinking lots of fluids). Even my long standing daily devotion to chocolate has gone - I can't even look at it! I know this will pass but as I am…

What's your shoulder routine
I am looking for inspiration for a good shoulder routine that can be done at home with dumbbells and kettlebells for days when getting to the gym isn't possible.

Low B12 and muscle growth
Does anyone know if low B12 levels impact the ability to build muscle? My levels are lowish and dropping - here in NZ they seem to be reluctant to supplement at lowish levels, whereas in other countries ie Japan they will intervene at MUCH higher levels (which interestingly has been linked to that country having lower…

Is it a waste of time
Trying to add strength on a calorie deficit. Aside from increasing muscle memory, really how much strength can be gained without eating at a surplus? When people talk about newbie gains, what is considered a newbie and how significant can those gains be? I am at the point of considering I might have to for the first time…

A not so dumb as it sounds question...
What is LBW? I know it means lean body weight but some people seem to calculate it by taking total body weight and subtracting fat mass to give LBW. Eg "I am 200 lbs and I have 30% bf therefore my LBW is 140lbs." But doesn't that remainder also include blood, fluids, bone etc not just true LBW?? Eg, when we work out…

Considering a surplus but nervous!
I am thinking about upping my calories to a surplus in order to build some muscle but am apprehensive! I am 42, 164cm and about 49kg (small build) with bf% about 21. I have always struggled to build muscle especially in the upper body, even when I was a national rep swimmer in my youth. Unfortunately I seem to build fat…

Shoulder adduction
What are some good exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in adducting the shoulder? I need to improve this for my swimming and am unsure which exercises will help this.

Which side??????
Do you hold the kettlebell/DB if you are doing single leg deadlifts?? I have read and seen both - some sites say hold it on same side as the supporting leg, others say opposite side!!

Are drop sets for beginners??
I am interested in gaining strength and have read that drop sets are very effective but not generally recommended for beginners. I am currently doing a mixture of straight sets and pyramids but drop sets interest me as I am wondering if I am maximising my efforts by leaving the heavier weight set till last in pyramids. For…

Are muscles fussy eaters??
Setting aside the obvious fact that the healthier you can eat the better for you on many health levels..... Will you get better results in strength training/muscle growth if you eat more protein and less of the not so nutritional food. I have this mental image that muscles are created by chicken, eggs etc and fat is made…

Good split for a newbie weakling!
I am starting off with weight training and hope to train 3 times a week with weight. I also swim 3 times a week (4-5km each session) and will probably run or bike on one or two days also. My main focus is upper body strength - even when I was a competitive national rep swimmer in my teens my strength was not great and I…

Fixing muscle imbalances
I am just getting into strength training, primarily for my swimming but also in general. I have noticed a significant difference in strength especially in the shoulders. For example, on my right side I can do only just over HALF of the external shoulder rotation exercises that I can on my left side - and I am right handed!…

Is soreness a good indicator of effort?
I have just started getting into strength training, and especially want to develop upper body strength for swimming. I started on the weekend and went again on Monday. Saturday was just a fairly easy session to gauge weights etc, but yesterday (Monday) I lifted a lot heavier and expected to be feeling it today. However I…

What results have you had from kettlebells?
I have just been introduced to the kettlebell swing by my man, but am doing it with a dumbbell for now! However it has inspired me to consider investing in a kettlebell or two so am wondering.... 1) what sort of weights (in lbs) are good starters? 2) what results have you had from solely using kettlebells or adding them to…

How long prep for a half Ironman?
Confession - I have never even done a sprint triathlon lol. But seriously, if someone wanted to do a half ironman, how many months of training would be required to complete it without dying. I am a swimmer who could probably do the swim part easily, and have gone from zero running to running 10km yesterday (admittedly on…

Treadmill v road
Has anyone here done both treadmill and road OR gone from treadmill to road and found much difference? I have recently got back into running and made it to 5k then had a sore knee so switched to treadmill for less impact. I put the incline at 1% and actually found treadmill at least equally difficult as the road. I have…

Question for runners
How do you make treadmill running more equivalent to road running?? I have heard some people say set it at 1% incline (or 2%) but others say that's not true. Or is it just impossible to replicate and do I have to accept that treadmill will always be the poor cousin in terms of effort, fitness and endurance building? The…

Running - strides per minute??
Does anyone know if there is an optimal or desirable number of strides per minute?? I out of interest (boredom really!) counted my strides for a minute on the treadmill yesterday and was doing 170 per minute, so am curious if there is wisdom around too low or too high strides per minute in terms of running efficiency etc

Treadmill v road running - which is lower impact?
I have been getting into running and had built up to 5k unti last week when I somehow ended up with a tender spot below one knee (sort of on inner shin). That last run felt great at the time and was my best time, so not sure what went wrong unless 30 mins of intervals on bike before the run had fatigued muscles too much.…

How to build running endurance quickly
I should start by admitting I do not enjoy running, but want 2013 to be the year I learn to love it as it is free and accessible and would enable me to go from being a swimmer to maybe doing triathlons. At the moment I can do about 5.4km before nearing death. I only have time to run twice a week and want to build up to…

What has (insert exercise/sport) done for you??
Really keen to hear from anyone who has a favourite sport or exercise (more specific than "weights" or "cardio") and how it has had a major effect on their weight/fitness/health. Have read of a few people who say that running for example has transformed their body, so am interested to hear what others have found to have…

Running/walking - swimming - biking!
I have heard that it takes the same number of calories to walk 10km as to run it. If this is true, does the same logic apply to biking and swimming - that it takes x calories to cover a certain distance regardless of how fast/slow it is done?? Incidentally, what is considered slow/moderate swimming and what is vigorous in…
