Newbie
I joined this group yesterday, but I'm hoping there may still be some active members around. I've been smoking for about 5 years, around a pack a day (some days less, some days more). I am making myself and my health the first priority in my life, so that includes quitting smoking. I've owned the Alan Carr book "The Easy…

MapMyX apps question
My primary form of exercise will be walking and strength training for awhile for a number of reasons. I also enjoy hiking and will eventually work to run/jog a 5K. I downloaded the MapMyRun, MapMyWalk, and MapMyHike apps. Is there really a difference with these or can I just use the walk app for everything?

Any hikers out there?
I've always been fascinated by hiking, especially long distance hiking. Wondering if there are any hikers out there I can connect with to really develop this interest into a hobby.

Question: Knee hurts, Need advice
I need some advice and am hoping you all can help me. I'm 305lbs and the weight has done some damage to my knees. Is it okay to wear a knee brace when I work out or when it's sore? If so, where can I find one that is big enough (upper knee/lower thigh measures 22.5")?

Coming back "home"
I joined MFP back in 2009 or 2010. It was amazing and life changing. I tracked everything I ate, made wonderful friends who I still meet with occasionally, and lost about 40-45lbs...something I had never done before (or since). In 2011 my dad suddenly died and threw my entire world upside down. I didn't care about what I…

Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike
Since I was a kid and saw a documentary in class about 3 separate individuals hiking the entire length of the Appalachian Trail, I've wanted to do it. It's over 2,000 miles through 14 states of grueling terrain and I ache to accomplish this goal (looking at 2013, possibly 2014 start date). Just wondering if there's anyone…

Cook for a Day, Eat for a Month
Anyone have any experience with this book?! I hate cooking and the kitchen in general which makes this really appealing. Didn't want to get it though if the recipes were super unhealthy or complex. Thanks!

Best Fitness Magazine for Women?
I'm looking to subscribe to a fitness magazine that helps motivate me and keep me focused. I think it will especially help in the long run. I have 100+ lbs to lose and would like one that focuses on weight loss, not maintenance. Something with women of all shapes and sizes, not just small framed women and not celebrity…

Dealing with grief
Anyone out there deal with grief while on this road to a healthier you? Really looking for some support and advice from others who understand first hand what this is like. My dad died 3 months ago. What's even more awful is my sister and I found him and I tried to save him using CPR. He'd been gone for 6-8 hours so it was…

Re-re-re-re-re-starting over. *Sigh*
Life is hard! When did it get so damn hard and when can I trade with someone? In May, 2010, I thought I had changed my life forever. I found MFP, starting tracking my food, educating myself on nutrition and exercise, and reached out to some friends in the fitness profession. I worked hard and implemented what I learned…

Do you have what it takes to be bold, honest, and sweaty on your profile? We work out and sweat for a good part of our week and we only ever picture each other smiling, happy, well groomed & manicured as our pictures imply. Come on MFPeeps, you know you work hard, now show it off! Let's see that red face, sweaty shirt, and…

Need salad dressing & marinade recipes
I used to hate salads. I mean DESPISED them. Now I love them. I think I've just found what works for me (delicious grilled chicken w/ black beans and a little cheese w/ sun dried tomato dressing= YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!) However, I seem to be going over on sodium almost every day and I'm realizing my salad dressing and the…

How often do you "cheat"?
How many treats, indulgences, whatever, do you allow yourself each week? And how big are they (snack, meal, beverage, etc.)? I make my treats fit into my calorie allowance, but am wondering if maybe I'm doing it too often or with too much food even though I'm not "stuffed" afterward. Would love others' perspectives on what…

Body fat % and lean body mass...need help
I'm 278 lbs with 42% body fat. So when I do the math (278 x 0.42) I get 116 which I understand to be the pounds of fat in my body...right? If so, does that mean that I have 162 lbs of lean body mass? And does that mean I shouldn't weigh less than 170ish lbs? Hoping someone out there knows more about this than I do...…

Please help me resist!!!
I've been doing great for about 2 weeks solid, then today my new scale came and read my weight 3lbs heavier than my last. Not a great start to my day. :grumble: Then today at lunch it was a work pitch-in. Did fine w/ my first plate...then came the white cake with buttercream frosting... I was good, took half a piece...then…

ChaLEAN Extreme...for obese?
I've been doing Turbo Jam since the fall (on and off, not primary/only workout program) and I LOVE it! I'd really like to get ChaLEAN Extreme next, but I'm a little nervous about it. Need new bathroom scale...suggestions?
I know this topic has been done to death, but the hits I found when searching the message boards, weren't great leads. My bathroom scale is all over the place (this morning it weighed me in at 265 and then at 281, after putting in fresh batteries). I need the scale to have these 5 qualities: 1) Digital w/ big display 2)…

Need new grab-n-go snack ideas!
I don't know about everyone else, but I pretty much eat the same stuff for snacks all the time (almonds, yogurt, string cheese, baby carrots). I don't want snacks that I have to make or prepare ahead of time, but something I can grab or even better if I can stock up and leave at work. Any ideas?!

Hard boiled egg nutrition info
Does an egg's nutritional info change when it's hard boiled (did not add salt or anything in the water or on the egg afterward)? I found the exact eggs in the database (Sunny Farms - Large Grade A), but not as hard boiled. I just want to make sure I document it correctly. Thanks!

Army Physical Fitness Test question
One of my long-term goals is to complete the Army Physical Fitness Test and score a 100 across the board. This means completing 46 standard push-ups, 80 standard sit-ups, and completing a 2 mile run in 15:36 or less. Does anyone know if these tests are administered right after the other or is there some kind of break in…

Looking for "Tough Love" Friends
Please don't get me wrong, the MFP friends I have on here are awesome. They are so encouraging, motivating, and supportive. I honestly didn't know such people existed until I started here in May. Protein questions
1) What is your protein goal for a day? 2) How much protein do you typically get each day? 3) What foods/supplements are your biggest sources of protein?
