Any hikers out there?

I've always been fascinated by hiking, especially long distance hiking. Wondering if there are any hikers out there I can connect with to really develop this interest into a hobby.

This was Horseshoe Basin in the Pasayten Wilderness, near Loomis and Tonasket.
We stayed in a meadow with a nice view of Anderson Mountain.

My wife and I go out a few times a year. We don't have any good hiking in our immediate area, so "real" hiking requires some travel. We are looking at a 10+hr hike this weekend to one of the highest peaks in NY state.5

I used to do a lot of backpacking and it was awesome. I've hiked the backcountry in the Tetons, Zion, and even summited Mt. Whitney (an amazing experience), along with other day hikes in Yosemite, the Sierras, San Bernardino, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon. However, I was lucky to have family members who love to hike. Have you ever considered booking a trip through REI or a similar place? It's a good way to get started, having professionals show you how it's done. They provide almost everything you need, but you'll need to buy (or rent) your own pack and of course buy your own clothing. Trying to figure it out on your own is challenging because you need permits most places. If you go on a trip in your general area, you could possibly meet others to hike with. It's a little pricey, but doing the trip on your own would cost quite a bit anyway and this way you go out there prepared. Also, nothing helps you bond with strangers better than discussing the best methods for pooping in the woods https://www.rei.com/adventures/trips/north-america#6

I enjoy it alot but haven't gone in years. My main friend I hiked with moved to Texas and my other friends are lazy as heck. If they are walking it's to get their bong and food lol.

I like to hike. Granted most of mine aren't in the most mountainous of places, but PA has some great trails. I do enjoy training for long endurance hikes.0

Live in Colorado- hiking is life here lol'5

I like hiking and go at least once a week. There is a lot of great hiking in Phoenix and the surrounding areas. I haven't done any long distance hiking though. My longest so far is about 6 1/2 miles. I like to get out there, get some good exercise and time with nature, then go home and clean up and get on with my day.2

Garmin says my longest hike was 50+ miles but I think it was more like 35 miles. (I was using a Magellan hiking GPS and it was buggy.)
My favorite was a much shorter (distance) trip, with two nights in Sahale Glacier Camp and one in Pelton Basin. I've been meaning to go back to Sahale ever since. It's only 7 or 8 miles, but they involve 4,500 feet of elevation gain.

Here's a view of my tent on that trip.

Sometimes, when I know it'll be warm enough, I leave the tent behind to save weight and "cowboy camp." This was on Heliotrope Ridge, Mt Baker.

I'm getting back into hiking too, but primarily day hikes. Did a little backpacking when younger. Hiking is one of the true motivations behind my journey of weight loss and fitness. I'm so glad I can do this again!

I don't know if I can count myself as a hiker (maybe just a baby in hiking department, lol) but I like hiking trips wayyyy more than beach trips ( not just the view but how much more workouts as well )! We used to live in WNY with great trails and State parks, and now in SC a bit away from the pretty Blueridge Parkway. Too bad that we're leaving the area soon... Those great views in NC will be greatly missed...
(Btw we're going to Zion next week! So excited!!)2 -
We try to go hiking on nice weekends and are lucky because we live near several hiking trails with lots of up and down hills. We usually do between 5 and 8 miles so it's not to long for the kids.2

Love to hike it's my favorite activity! Have hiked in US and internationally. This year I'm hiking Bosnia Herzegovina, Northern England Hadrian Wall , Scotland Mt Everest Base Camp, and Mt Kinabalu on my way back. I've also done some crazy long distance events but I'm not really doing that anymore. Agree with starting with an outfit like REI take a short trip and see how you like it. Also figure out if you like backpacking or supported hikes. It's great to get outside and it's a great way to see the world.3

I'm loving all these pictures! Hiking is my favorite way to get exercise (because to me it's not just exercise, it's FUN!) It's been a while due to a foot injury but I often hike through the ravine near my house (it's a short easy hike) or through Cleveland National Forest which is nearby (I live in Southern California). I try to go camping often too and always go hiking as part of the trip- Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Yellowstone, Zion, the Sequoias, the Redwoods, and in September I'm adding Siskiyou National Forest to the list (camping right off the Rogue River).
I'd recommend starting off with something fairly easy and working your way up. I also recommend spending the money on quality hiking clothing and shoes, if you can. REI is my favorite- it's on the expensive side but my hikes became exponentially more enjoyable when I learned (from classes there) what kind of clothing materials, and shoes, were best. Shoes are particularly important to avoid injuries.1 -

I absolutely recommend you take this up as a hobby! I love to hike ... it's my favorite thing to do. Because there's not a whole lot of "destination spots" or trees to hike through here on the Central Coast of California, I introduced Geocaching to my family. As my young son grew up, he fell in love with hiking and the outdoors in part because he was searching for the hidden cache and treasure with his GPS feature. Now he hikes everywhere, and we always make sure to include it on any vacation. These days, with him away at school, we take our dogs' photos on the trails. Here are a couple of shots of hikes in my hometown.

I have been a hiker/backpacker for over 30 years. My husband and I thruhiked the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, John Muir Trail, and the Great Divide Trail in Canada. We also did a lot of shorter hikes and backpacking trips. It used to be our life. My husband can't do much hiking now, so I switched to running, but I highly recommend it.11

Here's a picture my friend shot of me on the Lookout Mountain / Hidden Lake trail.

Last fall my husband and I took our kids (15 yr old boy and 12 yr old girl at the time) on a wilderness hike to the Irish Wilderness, part of the Mark Twain National Forest. It was a 19 mike hike from beginning to end over some very rough terrain. It took us 3 days. The kids talked about the accomplishment for weeks and brag about how they did it and that they don't think their friends could have.

I can't wait until my kids are old enough to do hikes like that.0 -
@kamamakai what a beautiful hometown!! I would constantly be taking pictures. Thanks for all the photos everyone! They are so inspiring to get out there and see it for myself. My husband and I are going to do a long weekend of primitive camping in a couple weeks. My mother-in-law is also section-hiking the Appalachian Trail so I've agreed to join her for at least 2 sections. Hoping to do the first section sometime next year. In the meantime I'll be trying more camping and local hiking to build my stamina.2

I love hiking as well, and I am lucky to be in Quebec with access to several mountains.
I do also participate in a hiking group where we drive 3+ hours to the Adirondacks and hike 8-10 hour trails
Check meetup.com, you can find a local hiking group you can join1 -
I hike. I wish I could get out more. My scenery doesn't look like the above pictures as I am in Las Vegas. I live right by Red Rock and there are some great short hikes there for all levels. For more greenery if I drive an hour outside of town there is Mt. Charleston. I'm actually going to California this weekend and will get some hiking in. I agree that Meetup.com is great for finding hikes and in my experience the groups are very friendly.0

In the Zion Narrows. You can thru-hike or decide to spend one night in the slot canyon.
