Gym bag advice
If you do more than 1 thing, and need the bag to carry for both (not hockey or anything, just swim & gym in my case) & shower & after-shower stuff, what do you like in a gym bag? Lots of pockets or none?

How important is a cool-down, really?
after a cardio w/o (eg 20-25 mins hiit). I feel like 5 mins is really too long; 3 feels reasonable.

Recipes - portions - water evaporating
How do you estimate portions when you cook something like a sauce or stew for a while? Obv can't just use the weight of the raw ingredients. I know things will differ depending on a million things, but what's a rough % minimum you might expect (for say cooking 4 cups of a sauce for 1 hour at med-low heat)? Like 5%…

Exercises that make you feel self-conscious (women)
How do you get around that? (I only do cable pull-throughs on days when my baggiest sweatpants are clean. I wear it with an old, baggy guy's T-shirt I inherited somehow. I do glute bridges at home.)

Efficient and enjoyable summer studying?
Students out there. Say you want to study, seriously (read closely, take notes) but also want to enjoy the sun for a couple of hours. Where do you go? What do you bring for maximal ergonomic benefit + comfort? Home is good bc can move around - table, couch, floor - and there is a loo and coffee machine handy. But it's…

In praise of cabbage
You guys, it fills you right up. Impressed. I had forgotten all about cabbage until a few days ago, wasting my time on green salads. I just shred up a red one and use a bit of oil & vinegar & salt and boom, salad for days. But oh no, takes forever to eat, because guess what, you're full. Really nice with grilled meat.

Best way to head off a cold?
I have the scratchy throat, am feeling the lungs bristle, little bit of nausea starting - what's the best way to nip it in the bud? I know about Vit C - what else works FAST? (i know this isn't 'fun' or 'chit chat', sorry)

pyramid sets
pros/cons? bad for the injury prone, even with extended rest? i took a look at body for life, and i guess that's what the strength part of it is. goes like this: 2 exercises per muscle group, back to back. Each exercise is: 12 reps at say 50%, 1 min rest, 10, 1 min rest, 8, ... 6, then 2x12 (no rest), and 2 mins rest…

Moderation vs 'bad/good foods'
another thread here prompted this, but i thought i'd lay my thoughts out & ask for yours. Moderation is necessary for a sustainable lifestyle. I am totally moderate, after 3 years (not on here) counting calories, more on than off. BUT Getting to the point where you are able to consistently eat moderately involves being…

HIIT intervals (8/12 seconds on bike)
The most publicized study's been out for a while, but I haven't tried this yet. Various study participants (university men & women, middle aged men) showed a reduction in visceral fat, when they did 3 x 20 minute sessions on a bike. I don't think I can do 3x and still recover from strength training - still even working up…

Can't net less than 2000-2100
I just can't do it in a sustainable way without overhauling my lifestyle and preferences completely. And even then (I have tried), I'm still too hungry to function comfortably in life. Weight's fine - I've been stable, maintaining for 2 years. Trying to do a 10% cut to deal with skinny fat. In theory, that should be around…

NEAT calories, skinny fat
My NEAT has significantly dropped due to chronic pain after an overuse injury. I probably move around 75% less than I used to. I just started back up with exercise, which is very modified. I have not gained any appreciable weight on the scale (4 lbs), but have definitely lost muscle and gained fat. 5'7, 129 lbs, but bf is…

Turkey pork meatloaf
Just made this, was surprisingly tasty, since I hate turkey other than on Thanksgiving, and I don't really like meatloaf. Thank **** for the pork. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/my-favorite-pork-turkey-meatloaf/ My version: - no spinach, red pepper, wheat germ, or honey - used oats instead of bread crumbs - used a massive…

Foreman grill - safe? Alternatives?
I try to avoid Teflon things, because I inevitably scratch them up either with use or cleaning. Plus, prefer iron, steel, & wood. How safe am I with the Foreman grill? What else could I use that would withstand my abuse?

Decent wool sweaters
Are these even made anymore? Possible to find one for less than $200 (in Canada)? Fed up with pilly acrylic/'mohair'/'cashmere' blends.

The genderless baby
story was on the radio the other day again. http://ca.jezebel.com/5806733/mom-says-baby-storm-is-not-genderless-after-all Now, I mostly agree with the parents, in that the world is generally messed up because of gender, we're all on a sliding scale, etc. They've said they can build up the kid's internal resources to fight…

Timing exercise for concentrated work
Exercise has improved my overall mental sharpness & mood, but it rattles me for anything involving reading/writing, for at least the next few hours. It makes me hate sitting. I'd much rather just go outside & do things & talk to people and be alive, and stuff. Anyone settle on a good rhythm for working out re writing,…

High-volume restaurants rant
I expect food I pay for to not be total ****, even if it's only 10 bucks a plate. I know lots of places don't necessarily pride themselves on their culinary technique, but is it honestly too much to ask to have salad that's not actively decomposing on my plate, from having sat DRESSED in a tub all day? (Or stale bread, or…

Rec sports?
I think I want to do something fun, soon, maybe with a vaguely competitive element. Any ideas? Criteria: - No running or jumping. Or VERY minimal - No morning meets; prefer not more than 1 practice/week - Fun, as in, social. An actual game. Biking for hours & hours is not appealing - At least a little physically…

Women with emotional moms
Are you similarly emotionally expressive/sensitive? Or do you tend to go in the opposite direction? Mine's pretty touchy-feely, & expresses strong emotions, both positive and negative (and has them, a lot, lol). I'm a lot more reserved that way. (Mind you, she's from an 'old country', where people are just like that. I…

Women who lift on 1800-2000 calories
Anyone willing to friend, or permit diary viewing? I'm hungrier since lifting, and hoping to find examples of filling diets with good macros. I think 1800-2000 would probably be a cut for me, at this point. (Goal -> conservative fat loss) Mine's open, it's all over the place. (& I helped someone move today, so it's diner &…

Get-ups
I want to do a bodyweight get-up like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-9ae-vYRW8 without using my hands to transition from the crunch or relying too much on one leg, anyone got tips? I try to shift my weight forward, over my crossed feet, but I suck.

Which plates to buy with standard bar?
The cheapest options near me go in these increments: ... 10 25 50 I'm deadlifting 2x20 @ 98 (98.5) lbs now (bar included). If I get the 50s, starting weight with bar will be 118.5. Might that be too much of a jump? Also, I can't find bumper plates for standard bars, do they even exist? Wish I'd started with the 2" bar now…

Callouses :(
How do you prevent/treat them? A couple of the small ones I've got have split, it sucks. (from lifting. what's best - chalk, gloves?)
