Foreman grill - safe? Alternatives?

I try to avoid Teflon things, because I inevitably scratch them up either with use or cleaning. Plus, prefer iron, steel, & wood. How safe am I with the Foreman grill? What else could I use that would withstand my abuse?

As a chef I can't see the point, but they are popular.

I have one, they are good for cooking on bulk, but they are a pain in the *kitten* to clean.

i know mine came with a spatula for cleaning so its a breeze plus in one recent thread someone said to use foil or parchment paper for easy clean up!

I have made burgers and porkchops on mine- LOVE not heating up the oven!

I heard there was this guy that used it to make bacon by his bead. He woke up and stepped on it. Anything that convenient, just is a disaster waiting to happen.

I owned one years ago and it didn't even last a year of light use before the coating came off and things started sticking to it.. It was never a joy to clean... Why not get a cast iron skillet/grill for your stovetop? Like the one in this video:

I have watched this video in its entirety three times in my life. I need to try this recipe!

    Lol @billsica, prob agree.

JustANumber, great that it works for you. Just wondering, are you more of a tidy-as-you-go sort of person? I'm not, really.

Think I might be closer to bdmaster on this.

neanderthin: You could probably make do with anything, not all of us are so skilled :)

Yeah, am looking to grill in bulk conveniently :/ No barbecue, just an oven. I did finally invest in a meat thermometer*, proper food scale, and glasslock tupperware, so, am set to board the macro train. (I have no idea how that sounds, am exhausted from cooking all day, so props to you neanderthin)

*required because I've only recently come to be on speaking terms with chicken

actually nope im not. hubby was just (quite literally) after me for not keeping up on dishes this week. Oops

as i type this he is attempting to make Latkes on the GF, lol. Who knows how that will turn out.

You can do what i did- go to the Goodwill on their 50% off days and get one. If it works out, then great but if not then you didnt break the bank and can donate it. :)

    Agreed.

That is why I rarely clean it. Adds more flavor.

Oh this made my day! That was Michael from The Office! "Pam, I need you to come in here and rub butter on my foot."

    "I've got country crock!"

Haha, that could be good! So long as it tastes ok, I guess. (And he cleans)

I don't see why it wouldn't. I have electric, and I plan to get one of these sometime.. I do have single-burner cast-iron pans and they work, though I haven't used them much as I'm just learning.

By the way, check out that guy's original cast iron + egg video for a laugh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIU9_Pd43jI

That's logical, thank you, I am too tired to make or understand sense!

Haha, I love his touch at the end, about letting things 'evaporate', on top of everything else people caught. Good that he's confident, I guess!
