Back in the Saddle
Hello all I'm back after what feels like the year from hell due to family issues, so I'm making a commitment to make 2013 a wiser and happier year than the last couple! Things I learned about weight loss: 1. When I was down to an "average weight" after losing 96 pounds on this site, I felt cold all the time, and kind of…

Medieval Martial Arts!
Last Saturday, I had an introduction class in western martial arts, which means fighting with longswords, rapiers, daggers and staves. I loved it and I'm going to keep going. I realize this is probably getting trendy (I don't know.. I don't watch TV much anymore), but it's also the very first physical activity (other than…

What is a TURN-ON for you (male and female)
In no particular order, because they're all very important: Compatible pheromones Smart enough to keep me interested (nothing sucks as much as exhausting all conversation in 15 mins) Considerate (including prepared to offer and accept apologies if appropriate) Non-smoker (this is a deal breaker for any ex-smoker) Wants to…

Went to the doctor and...
So. My doctor has changed offices and started this new Wellness Clinic concept. I've been with him since 2003 and this is the first time I've seen him genuinely happy. I've now lost 71 lbs. and so he sent me for blood tests and the like. When I met with his nurse yesterday, the only word she could say was "perfect...…

Curious about No Flush Niacin & Body Temp
Over the course of the last year, I've discovered that weight loss has made me feel quite cold generally. OK fine, I learned to layer, i.e. camisole, t-shirt and sweater most days. About a month before Christmas, I started taking no flush niacin (slow release) with my daily vitamin and fish oil pills. It took a while to…

Check Out MFP's endorsement!

Fat Cells Reproduce Themselves!
http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2011/12/29/fat-monkeys-chasing-cures.html Aside from the research, the throwaway line is the one that surprised me. Fat cells replicate new/more fat cells. That wasn't thought to be the case until very recently if what I've read elsewhere is true. The drug they're talking about has side…

Bathtime *kitten* Rant
I have a complaint with my new skinny butt... WHY DO BATHTUBS HAVE TO BE SO HARD AND WHY CAN'T I FIND A PROPER SOFT THING TO SIT ON? I don't want a floaty (too buoyant) and I don't want a gardening kneely board (too buoyant AND too hard). I've tried both of these. Next experiment... a folded yoga mat (probably too big but…

Nobese... Noverweight...
NORMAL! By 0.1 lb, but I broke the O/W barrier this morning! Btw it's been 26 years coming, so I'm one happy cat!

Weighing Your Food and Recording Properly for Better Weight
Weight does not equal volume when you're calculating out how much to eat. Volume's really uncertain because each different food has its own specific density. BUT perseverence does win out. My favourite treat is Chapman's Cappuccino Frozen Yogurt (no fat) with chocolate flakes. They measure in half cups (125 mL) and I was…

So How Exactly Should You Weigh That?
I recently bought some Northern Gold Steel Cut Oats from Costco. They're truly sublime, but if you look at the packaging there's a little snag. The nutritional info sets out dry measure by weight to figure out calories, but when you look at the cooking information, it's done by volume, using milliliters (mL)! Kind of dumb.…

What Made a Huge Difference to Me This Week
You're going to laugh at this. I went to Costco on Thursday and I found... STEEL CUT OATS!!! I've been looking all over the place for them and had never found them. I discovered three things: 1. Instant oatmeal says it has fibre in it, and maybe it did before it was processed, but it sure doesn't in its final form,…

Food to Deal with Adrenaline Crash
Hi all I'm a litigator, and when we're in court, there's a certain adrenalin high to doing it. The problem with this is that there's also a corresponding adrenalin crash about two hours after I'm out of court. Exercise seems to help, if I get it before the crash, but if not, I need food. The problem is, what food? No, it's…

You have logged in 365 days in a row!
I did this! And look what MFP has done for me! *looks at sig*

Why am I surprised? (it's rhetorical, really)
Yesterday I had an "event" day... my husband and I went to Cirque du Soleil for the first time and had a day out. That resulted in eating a bunch of white carbs (which I hardly ever do now) and eating 1000 cals more than I should! Fortunately I had banked about a third of those from the previous day so it wasn't as bad as…

Odd NSV
I have a lap! My cat has discovered it and now she won't leave! She used to sit next to me on the desk but now, she loves the lap! *giggles*

Measuring Frame
I keep reading that you are small frame if your thumb and fingers overlap gripping your other wrist, medium if they touch and large if they don't. My burning question is... when I grip my other wrist using my thumb and forefinger, they don't touch. When I grip my wrist using my thumb and middle finger, which is longer,…

Feeling Cold?
One of the most odd things I noticed in dropping a lot of weight is how cold I've felt over the winter in particular. Now I live in the Vancouver Canada area and it simply doesn't get that cold here. Lots of rain, very little snow, though. During the summer I was exercising but due to some health concerns over the fall, I…

200 days
Hi all My achieve menu tells me that I've logged in 200 days in a row  Nearly a year ago, on February 1, 2010, I resolved to lose all that weight I gained over the years. That's where this started, right after a trip to Hawaii. There's a pic of that in my info, with me standing with my husband. So far, I've lost 70…

Wondering about Health Trends
My doctor, who I've been going to for the last 8 years, just opened his own practice. He's sharing space with a dietician, a physiotherapist and a personal trainer. His plan is to be proactive with his patients' health and to make them healthier through lifestyle changes. The deal is that if you need the doctor you see the…

Asparatame Causes Insulin Release (leading to hunger) -- who
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/russell-blaylock-nutrition-and-behavior-aspartame/ This documentary is worth watching despite the annoying doctor type. It deals with all sorts of things related to sugar/carb consumption as well as dietary deficiencies and immune reactions. I won't drink another Diet Coke.

What Does 200 Lb 5'6" look like?
Does anybody remember Weight Loss Clinic? It was good, provided you didn't mind spending $15/lb on it. I lost 65 pounds on that, decades ago. They did counselling and food journals and promoted exercise and the biggest problem with it was lack of support at maintenance weight. So I lost 65 lb. and wound up at 145 lb. I got…

Today I lost 100 lbs..
of clothing. I went through my boxes and closets with a critical eye last night and I went to Goodwill with 5 full bags of clothing that someone else will be overjoyed to wear, including job clothes and a beautiful party dress. Then I boxed up some cat food tins for the food bank because poor people have cats too. It's…

Death and Rebirth (sort of) of a Scale
I knew that Taylor, my more or less faithful scale, was in trouble when it told me I lost 9 pounds overnight. That was two sleeps ago. The following morning, it told me I reached my goal weight of 145.4 (intermediate) and then promptly expired into "Err" mode. I did a little happy dance over having reached my goal weight…

In December when I was 16
When I was 16, right before my parents took me and my sisters to Puerto Vallarta for Christmas, I weighed exactly what I weigh today. I remember how depressed I was getting on the scale then, but today, I'm elated! Thanks MFP!

Calvin Klein, meet *kitten*. *kitten*, meet Calvin.
So. I went to Costco on Friday and my eyes fell on a pair of black jeans. My present black jeans are Vanderbilt size 18s, but frankly, it's been 20 lbs and now they're baggy, so I thought... ok.. these new ones.. they're "Skinny Jeans", I better buy a 16 and hope they fit. I got them home and they were ENORMOUS, so on…

A Small Fine Whine
I'm having a "does not compute" moment. The people at work tell me I'm not overweight, but srsly folks, look at the height weight in my sig. I've still got a "weighs to go"! I don't mind, but what I see in the mirror is not (apparently) what they see. I'm not sure I'm ready to be "normal", whatever that means. Hell, I…

Side Effects of Losing Weight
What have I lost besides 4 pant sizes? 1. I can't sit for as long because now (at 185lbs) I have a bony *kitten*! Who knew. 2. Invisibility. So much for my nefarious plot to become a supervillain. 3. Insulation. I'm much more cold sensitive now. So much for building a fortress of solitude in the Antarctic. What have you…

Blood Pressure (or lack thereof)
Here's something I thought I'd never ask: How low does your blood pressure have to be before it's low? I was very surprised to discover that my bp's now around 100/60 and that's lower than it's ever been to date. I'll ask my doc when I see him, but that's not for another few months at this point.
