Tiny NSV
I got new running shoes, and took them out for a trial dog walk this evening...and I'm already looking forward to a short run with them in the morning. It may be one of the signs that the pod-people have invaded. (Gosh, I just dated myself.)

small hurt-feeling snuffle post
I'm actually angry at myself for allowing this to bother me, but it does: As I was out walking my dog-beast (5 miles, 4 mph), a car of teen boys passed me and the guys "moo"ed at me. Twice. I had been feeling pretty good, but that really made me uncomfortable. And I'm miffed that I'm letting that be one more thing that…

Finessing Fitness Week 3
I lifted this from another group's board: I wanted to plan at least a couple hours in advance.... If this is not the correct information, please let me know. If it is, then hopefully it's helpful to all of us. _______________ AUGUST CHALLENGE WEEK #3: RISE OF THE MACHINES! This is the week three team challenge. This should…

Constructive advice, please...
I'm gaining. My diary's open and honest. (But please don't be mean.)

Sadly withdrawing from a 5K....and in need of support...
I've been sick, sick, sick for three week. Five weeks ago, I signed up for my first 5 K, and I started using the C25K program in November (in addition to walking a ton, Zumba and yoga.) Between the sinus infection, stomach flu, and the current upper respiratory infection, I've had to seriously curtail my exercise. Lately…

Fat Head documentary
I'm a sucker for a documentary, and this one has left me a little troubled. The narrator decided to eat a sensible fast food diet and lost 12 pounds in 28 days (similar to the twinkie diet guy).... It was an interesting take on the food pyramid, at the least, and a fairly disturbing rebuttal to "supersize me." His…

crazy good pot pie
Let me preface this by saying I don't normally like pot pie because I don't like pie crust, and usually pot pie fillings are a little bland. However, I've been sick as a dog this week, and wanted some comforting, easy food for dinner (and didn't want to go to the store). So: I made a curried pea and potato filling (wildly…

Pear & Chevre salad!
I've just made this (http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipes/10176), and is so much better than I thought. Ate it over warmed spinach. Amazing.

comfort food
This makes 5 servings @271 calories.... and was exactly what I needed to fight my cold. 2 hot italian sausages 1 onion, chopped 1/2 C lentils 1/2 C brown rice 1 can no/low sodium vegetable broth Brown sausage, add onions & cook until soft. Stir in rice & lentils, add broth & cover. Reduce heat & simmer until rice is tender…

Ideas for food that travels well
A coworker has just had twins. I've previously made chile verde, chili, stuffed baked potatoes and molasses cookies for them, but all of those were freezer entrees for them to use in emergencies, and it's my night to cook. The chile verde is the quickest, but I would have needed to start the pinto beans this morning, so…

Metallic taste...
I'm not sure if this is a food and nutrition or a wellness question, but: I have this metallic taste in my mouth (and have since after dinner last night.) I've brushed several times, had coffee & a yogurt, brushed again...downed water.... everything tastes as if I'm also sucking pennies (well, how pennies smell.) No bloody…

I may have hit my maintenance weight.
I went shopping for dress pants for work, and the pants that fit (in three different brands) are a US 6. While there are smaller sizes, I want grown up pants rather than skinny jeans and that clothing monstrosity known as "jeggings".... After spending the morning looking for work clothes, I walked out of Ross and Target…

Amazing Chile Verde
This was my big weakness as a vegetarian, the dish I craved but couldn't make until now.... I made this for my grandmother tonight (added a can of jalepenos rather than serrano chiles, five whole cloves of garlic, and 8 roasted tomatillos...because I had them in my freezer) and served it over 1/3 C refried beans and 1/4 C…

vegetables
I've been eating vegetables like a fiend. Roasted onions, roasted brussels, roasted pepper, roasted asparagus, roasted beets.... yumm. Today's dish: sliced yam, yellow onion, and grated smoked gouda in a gratin. So good (especially next to the brussels and onions.) Any favorites?
-
brussels sprouts
I love this much maligned vegetable....I like them steamed, steamed with stone ground mustard, dumped in a stew... but my new favorite: Trim the sprouts, lightly grease with olive oil and sprinkle with salt & pepper. Bake at 400 F until the outer leaves are crispy and browned. (40+ minutes).Great hot, great cold....

New Jeans (a tiny success)
I'm wearing US size 8 jeans.... for the first time in my adult life. There's no muffin top, I can bend and stretch, I have a hot pad tucked into the waistband because of low back cramps (so there's a little room in the waist!) They're still too snug in the thighs for me to feel comfortable wearing them out of the house,…

Halloween costume help?
I've finally gotten the team of teachers I work with to agree to dress up in a theme (I was lobbying for cartoon characters, then literary characters....voted down.) So, now I'm stuck. I could have easily been Velma (I've even got the turtleneck), but I've got no ideas for the current theme: significant historical figures.…

Zumba-thon
The local Zumba instructors are having an event today (to raise money for charity, and so people can try out different Zumba teachers.) I'm totally jazzed about going (none of my girlfriends would come: I know some of you would if you lived locally.) I've been dancing around the house in preparation! And have filled two…

...not for those living clean, but Tiramisu for those who ar
I've made this for a couple of potlucks, and it's gobbled up by my coworkers (so far it's been excellent diet food for me: I actually got 1 tablespoon from the last one I made!) http://www.cookinglight.com/food/top-rated-recipes/italian-00400000051023/page9.html Since the Cooking Light site includes the nutritional…

A tiny victory
Out of necessity, and a desire to not drive an extra hour, I went to the supermarket on my way home, and I entered HUNGRY. In my life bmfp, that would have lead to a few jalapeno poppers finding their way from the deli counter to my cart (and waist) at the minimum. However, I walked out with raspberries. And spinach. And…

Body shape changes...
One of the only perks of my former weight was the cup size.... how come they're shrinking before I lose the chins? :ohwell: Will the chins migrate and take up the slack? (This is not a serious question.... just a small, slightly disappointed rant about the new lack of rack.... I don't miss them enough to be that…

Totally love my kitchen scale!
I feel better about my eyeballing ability after weighing ingredients today and finding I was under rather than over estimating. Yippee! I wouldn't have bought this scale, but my mom had one tucked into her cabinet and, when I cleaned out her house to use as a rental, there it was: lovely, practically unused, and calling my…

Amy's Indian Samosa fake
I love those microwavable samosas, but the sodium (680) had me a little uneasy. I made some fairly tasty potato and pea curry filling, and plopped it into a whole wheat tortilla. The tortilla has the bulk of the sodium (340), and the results are flavorful, and more filling than the commercial, tasty version. If anyone…

Fairly stupid rant
It's 5:30. I have 1299 calories left today, if I eat my exercise calories. And I'm not hungry. I know I need to have dinner, and probably within the hour, to stave of the late night munchies (and to keep myself from going into starvation mode and hanging onto the weight I'd so desperately like gone), and I just don't…
