Hills......
Now that I've been running pretty consistently for almost 5 years it's time for me to incorporate hills into my workouts. Something I've known for a while but I've found the prospect, to put it mildly, daunting. (There's a hill at Mooney's Bay in Ottawa that I've had my eye on for a while but even the kids from the track…

Bloody nipples.....(it's a guy thing)
For some people black toenails are the sign that they've finally hit the big leagues in terms of mileage, for a lot of guy it's bloody nipples. (sorry - there's no nice way to put it) I think I've tried just about every cure out there, vaseline just made a mess of my shirt, bodyglide just got sweated away, band aids & nip…

The truth about sports drinks
It's no secret that much of the so-called hydration research is funded by companies that manufacture and promote the consumption of sports drinks. This is a bit long but a very interesting read for anyone participating in endurance sports. http://www.bmj.com/content/345/bmj.e4737

Sunscreen
Is there a sunscreen that is really "sweat proof" ? I burn like crazy (every summer I do an excellent imitation of a freshly boiled Maine lobster) and every sunscreen I've tried ends up practically blinding me when I start sweating. Is this a hopeless quest?

Blueberries.......
Here's an interesting little item from Runners World..... BLUEBERRIES PROTECT YOU ON LONG RUNS Physiologists from Appalachian State University gave runners a cup of blueberries daily for six weeks; a second group had no blueberries. Participants then ran for two-and-a-half hours. The results (published in May) show the…

Home made "gu"
I recently decided to stop using the prepackaged gels for my longer runs,my new fuel belt included a gel flask and was given the following recipe: "Take one of those gel bottles. fill it to the #3 line with honey, corn syrup, maple syrup, or any combination of a natural energizer of your choosing. put in a small squeeze of…

Energy Gels (bulk packaging?)
In an effort to be kinder to Mother Nature I picked up a gel flask for my longer runs - figured it's a good way to eliminate all those individual gel pack wrappers. So far the only gel I've been able to find in bulk packaging is carb-boom. Does anyone know of any other that are available? (I've been quite happy with…

A different kind of challenge...
I'm old enough to remember the anti-littering ads on TV that showed a native American shedding a tear while surveying the litter along the side of the road. It seems we're overdue for that ad campaign again, but I digress. It distresses me to see garbage and litter strewn along our sidewalks and recreational paths and I…

PT Certification
No, I'm not thinking of changing careers to become a personal trainer but I would like to learn more about the physiology of exercise etc but there seems to be a dizzying array of certification bodies out there. This may be a bit of a weird question but are there really significant differences in the content of the courses…

A lesson for the guys.......
Q. When your wife tells you to order whatever kind of pizza and wings you'd like for dinner is it: 1) an invitation to order those 5 alarm wings you love -or- 2) a guessing game whereby you are supposed to guess what she fancies that day A. None of the above, no matter which you pick you're wrong!

G'day from the Ottawa Valley
That's right, we not only say eh! here but we say g'day too! I'm new to MFP - I've battled with weight my entire adult life and managed to lose about 35 lbs in the past couple of years by cutting back on snacks and exercising more but that last 25 lbs just didn't want to leave so after a friend showed me MFP on his iPhone…
