Have you inspired anyone else lately?
Had an interesting incident in the gym yesterday and it got me thinking. I was working my squat routine, and was finishing up my warm up sets when I asked for a spot (due to some people making very poor decisions, the standing rule is any squat over 315 must be done with a spotter). So I ask if anyone's available and this…

Back in the saddle again... (poor horse!)
So... we meet again, Trebek! Oh, sorry, forgot where I was. Since I left MFP almost two years ago (everything between new baby and my dad having a couple heart attacks just turned my life inside out) and I backslid to pretty much my starting point, I figure I'll "start fresh"! I'm 6'2" and 388 pounds as of this morning. I…

State Fair NSV
Went with the family to the state fair today, and as a tradition I always hit one or two of those "Guess your weight" booths. Usually they're either 10-20 lbs off, I get my prize, and we're done. Usually I have a loose shirt and jeans, so it's hard to see what I look like underneath (to make things harder for them). This…

NSV - I can go twice as high...
Who says white guys can't jump? And even past that, who says FAT white guys can't jump? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOySFCFKydY New record for me, and I earned the respect of most of the gym tonight - I got comments like this: "Damn! Boy getting some vertical!" "I've seen guys half your weight who can't do that. Awesome…

How far are newbie gains supposed to go?
I've been lifting for a year now, and here's what I've seen happen: Starting weights: Bench: 180 Deadlift: 350 Squat: 350 Current PRs: Bench: 275 Deadlift: 565 Squat: 600 Each time I get a new PR, it's not like a 5 or a 10 lbs PR - it's been as big as 40 lbs as of recent attempts. Is this still considered "newbie gains"?…

Almost a year's worth of effort...
For 9 years I have been competing in the highland games - the first 4 years were sporadic (1 - 2 games a year, and just goofing off). The next four years were spent trying to win an overall game and progress from the "B" class to the "A"s (the highest amateur class). Training consisted of doing some practice throwing off…

Highlander Games (*NOT* Highland Games!)
Just found out that the North American Highlander Association is setting up shop in NC. http://www.nahighlander.com/ The idea of competing in the Highlander Games intrigues me - it's a 50/50 blend of highland games and Strongman, so you may get a day of this (this is the Nationals' routine for 2012, with weights for LW…

20 lbs down... but such a change!
Haven't taken a decent progress pic since June, and didn't think I was changing that much, but then I took a new pic and compared... The new pic's on the left, BTW. That's just 20 lbs (360 lbs down to 340), but I'm just stoked to see the changes - now I really wanna keep going and see what I can do!

100% Raw Powerlifting NC State Championship
Went to my first powerlifting meet - I was just a spectator, and a couple of my friends were competing. And I'm addicted - the atmosphere was awesome. And I just checked the state records - I'm only about 100 lbs off from making the state record on squat and deadlift, so I really should try, I guess. Now I definitely have…

40 lbs gone, and it shows!
Well, it's 3 months later, and I'm nearly 40 lbs down. I've been training harder and heavier than I've ever been, and my wife actually said she's noticed a change. You know how you look at the same thing day after day and it never seems to change? Well, it took a picture to prove to myself that I'm actually doing…

Two NSVs, one funny, one not.
First NSV - my wife has said that I am a lot less "bottomly audible", as it were. Second - I used to have what I call "mini panic attacks" - imagine if you feel over-caffeinated to the point that your hands shake and your heart races a little. It would happen about once a week, and would fade after about 5-10…

Powerlifting NSV
So I've been lifting for less than a month now, just trying to get good form, and half-testing max lifts in the meantime. Yesterday, I start out on the squats, warming up with light weights, keeping watch on my form. Don't know if it was the lunch I had, or what, but it felt like everything was falling into place - nice…

Am I starving or hurting myself?
Might not be the place to ask, but I figured I'd try. My background: I'm 360 lbs, 24% bodyfat. I lift for about an hour and a half for two days out of the week, and do some throwing training one day a week, with plans to increase frequency. My goal is to try to lose fat while keeping muscle (to a point), but I've gotten…

25 lbs gone - trimming up has begun!
I'm putting out my "success pic" to give myself impetus to keep going - at my size, 25 lbs isn't that much, but the work has definitely begun to pay off. Not looking to be skinny (never gonna happen), but it's good to see the midsection tighten up and the shoulders start to pump up. Me at the beginning of the month, before…

Very odd and unexpected NSV
As I have mentioned before in other threads, I'm a big guy who picks up and throws big things. I've been basing my bodyfat estimate based on waist and neck measurements. Over the past few years of moderate training, I've been noticing that parts of my body have firmed up and areas that are natural fat pockets have started…

First little NSV (hopefully of many)
Pulled an old belt out of the closet that I don't wear a lot because the buckle's one of the hook type that tends to damage belts if there's too much pressure. But I love the belt since it has my family crest on it. Put it on today, and not only does it fit comfortably right now, but I've run out of holes! I'd have to get…

Let's get to work!
Hi everyone - I'm in a unique situation, and hope that MFP will help out! I'm an amateur Highland athlete - throwing the telephone pole, big rocks, iron blocks - the whole deal. But packing on strength for the games has left me a bit big at 380 lbs (I'm 6'3"). Never really paid much attention as I still can do cartwheels…
