new to the group
Been on MFP off and on for a while, and trying to actually stick with it this time. About me: male, 51 years old. 5' tall, and 192 lbs (as of this morning). Looking for friendly motivators (I do better with a carrot rather than a stick), and older folks like me to hang with.

Recommend me a book!
I'm always looking for GOOD science-fiction / fantasy to read (and talk about). Post some of your favorites here!

Strength Training at home?
What can I do at home for strength training? I have a treadmill, so cardio isn't an issue.

Back after 18 months
As General McArthur said, "I have returned!" I dropped off the face of the earth (or at least off MFP) about 18 months ago. I've learned that I do not lose weight / inches if I'm not logging at least every other day. So I'm crawling back in here after a few "Aha!" moments. Last weekend, went to the movies and was huffing…

If it feels more intense, is it really?
Obviously, walking for the same amount of time at a faster pace burns more calories - but what about walking the same DISTANCE at a faster pace? In other words, if I walk a mile and then run a mile, does the running burn more calories than walking? Do you burn more calories if you walk a mile in 100 degrees in the sun…

Bookaholics Anonymous
Hi, my name is Doomspark and I'm a Bookaholic. Seriously - the last time we moved, we had 38 boxes of books, and that was after giving five boxes of books to the local library. I don't mind reading books on the computer (Project Gutenberg is my friend), but I love real books that I can hold in my hands. The vast majority…

Not exactly a NSV, but...
One of my coworkers and I spend the last 15-20 minutes of lunch walking around the courtyard at work. Today we did 6 laps in 20 minutes, which (according to my pedometer) is just under a mile. When we started, we thought we were doing good with 3 laps. And I'm not huffing and puffing out of breath, in spite of having…

Making lemonade
Some miscreant stole part of my lunch yesterday... took the yogurt and the Kashi bar, left the sandwich. I wasn't happy. Today, one of my coworkers (my walking buddy) has offered to let me store my lunch in her office fridge on the 2nd floor (I work on the first floor). This will have me climbing the stairs twice a day. So…

New here and a bit bewildered
Ok... I have gone to the Scooby site and calculated my TDEE and so on. At least, I think so, since I'm not sure I did things correctly. I am 51 years old, male, and 60 inches tall. I drive a desk and get very little exercise. I usually only eat twice a day. I have no clue what to select for goal, or how to set those…

Macros - please explain?
I sort of have an idea of what macros are, but if someone could explain them in simple terms, I'd be most appreciative. I'd also like recommendations for what's appropriate for me currently - 5'1", 191 lbs, 51 years old, male. EDIT: I have high blood pressure, so please include thoughts about sodium.

5K on November 3
My office is sponsoring a 5k run/walk for a fundraiser in November. I've decided to try to complete it - walking, not running. I'm very much a couch potato, so I think this will be good for me. And having said that, I'm terrified of looking like an idiot. My plan is to try to walk on my treadmill every day from now until…

Shoes for the novice runner
"runner" here is something of a misnomer - more like "walker and once in a while jogger hoping to eventually be a runner" I have no clue about shoes, except that I know good shoes are important when running. I'm 5' tall, male, 191 lbs (more or less) down from 212, and wear a 6.5 E - yes, I have duck feet. I also apparently…

Oh NUTS!
Almonds seem to be the #1 recommended nut here. I see "handful of almonds" recommended as a snack over and over. So my question is, WHY almonds? What are other nuts that are good?

Vegetables
I am looking for vegetable recipes that don't involve 20-gazillion specialized ingredients, and are easy to make. No squash, please - I can't eat it.

Shin pain?
About three weeks ago, one of my coworkers and I started walking at lunchtime. We average 15-20 minutes a day, and while we don't amble, we aren't power walking. Usually we go 4 laps around the courtyard (half a mile, as far as we can tell). These past few days, I've been getting REALLY awful pains in my shins. They start…

A different kind of success story
My wife has decided to join me in my weight-loss journey. This is a momentous event, as she's never been willing to do this before. I hope that we'll be able to keep each other focused and get fit and healthy together.

The Evil Scale
My scale is evil. Last night, I relocated it to another room. This morning, it tells me I've lost ten lbs. Put it back in the original spot, and the 10 lbs come back. Moved it to the new location, and the 10 lbs went away again. Testing ensued. In the new location, a 14 lb bag of catfood weighs 14 lbs. At the old location,…

A small success
Last week, one of my coworkers and I started walking at lunch. We walk for an average of 15 minutes *instead* of sitting and talking. Last week, I was huffing like a steam engine by the time we finished. Today, I wasn't huffing nearly as much. I don't care what the scale says - I feel like I'm improving.

Hoofin' it!
Some of my coworkers and I were grumping at lunch yesterday about the difficulty of losing weight as one ages. It was suggested that since we usually spend the last fifteen to twenty minutes of lunch sitting on our behinds and talking, that we might as well walk while we talk. We have both a big parking lot and a smaller…

500 calories a day program?
I am *NOT* promoting this, but one of my coworkers has just started a program that only allows her to eat 500 calories a day. The first week was protein only (no veggies). Is this something that anyone else has heard of? Is it reasonable? 500 calories doesn't sound healthy to me...

Getting back on track
This past Sunday, my stomach decided to go on strike. And from about 1pm Sunday till about 8pm Monday, it violently rejected anything solid, and most liquids. Was finally able to manage some yogurt Monday night. Yesterday was mostly crackers, sodapop, and more yogurt. Today, more of the same. Oh, and I guarantee that this…

World of Warcraft
Didn't see any threads about this in the first three pages of the group, so I figured I'd start one. Who plays WoW? What faction? What server? I play Alliance on Medivh and am a member of IXOYE. Due to real life issues, I haven't been online for a couple of months, and I'm missing it. Hope to get some Azeroth time this…

driving a desk (exercises at the office)
So I've been trying to figure out ways to work on getting fit while at the office. I'm not in a position where I can really work out during lunch because if I do, I'll smell like a horse all afternoon. OTOH, there are some things I *can* do. 1. Concentrate on sitting up straight and tightening up my stomach muscles. 2.…

Question about counting steps
I've read that it's good to walk a lot to help with weight loss. The number that gets bandied about a lot is 10,000 steps a day. My question is, how do you count steps? Is it when each foot hits the ground - left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot - or is it a single foot, left-foot, left foot, left foot, etc? If the…

settle a dispute?
Scrambled eggs vs. fried eggs: When I do scrambled eggs, I do them in a skillet with olive oil. Just eggs; no milk, no salt or other additives. When I fry eggs, I fry them in the same skillet, with olive oil. Just eggs. No milk, no salt, no other additives. My wife says fried eggs have more calories. I say that they're the…

Lifeline? Safety net? Or a hammock?
Whatever y'all want to call it, I'm looking for a support group and/or friends here. About me: 50 years old, male, looking to lose somewhere between 50 and 60 lbs. I know there's gotta be a group that fits those parameters here!

Lunch at the office
I work in an office that's about five miles away from the nearest source of food. Can you say "captive audience"? We have a cafeteria on-site whose daily options are "hot meal" or "salad bar". The hot meal option is usually very high in fat, sodium, carbs, and calories, and my tolerance for salad is limited. Plus salad…

Salutations!
I joined this site a couple of days ago, and I figured I should post an intro. About me: I'm male, 50 years old, 5'1" tall and pushing 200 lbs (198 this past Monday). I've had no luck with diets in the past and just seem to put on MORE weight. The only time I was able to consistently lose weight was using a diet supplement…
