Hoofin' it!

Some of my coworkers and I were grumping at lunch yesterday about the difficulty of losing weight as one ages. It was suggested that since we usually spend the last fifteen to twenty minutes of lunch sitting on our behinds and talking, that we might as well walk while we talk. We have both a big parking lot and a smaller courtyard that we can circumnavigate.

This won't be power walking by any means, probably more of an amble. But we believe that getting up and moving - even if it doesn't burn lots of calories - will be better than not doing it.

What a great idea! I always try to get away from my desk for as long as I can at lunch time, whether it's just 15 minutes round the block or 45 minutes over the river and back.

It is better than doing nothing and the reason it becomes harder to lose weight as you age is because we tend to become less active. Being less active leads to loss of lean muscle mass which in turn means fewer calories burned when you are at rest. It's not an age thing that slows down weight loss, it's a sedentary thing. Get moving more, rebuild some muscle and weight loss is the same at any age.

We're also figuring that we'll provide impetus for each other to keep doing it. This sort of thing is easier in a group.
