Body Fat %
I go to a website that has me take circumference measurements to find my body fat %, since I don't have access to anyone who can do it with the calipers. The site says my body fat is 26.85%. Is this good or bad?

NSV-pants
I can take my size 14 pants off without unbuttoning them! I don't think I'm ready for size 12 though. I wish they'd make a size 13. Ultimate goal is single digits.

question about martial arts/boxing
I'm confused about whether doing my karate charts is strength training or not. From what I understand, if I go through the charts (the different kicks and punches) in the air, not hitting anything, that is isometric exercise, right? Does that mean that if I go through the charts with a heavy punching bag, that counts as…

my first "have you lost weight"
Today one of my coworkers, who I haven't seen since May, asked if I had lost weight. I have! 20 pounds! She is the first person to verbally notice not counting my mother.

defeating the midnight munchies
I am not one of those people that can stop eating at 7 pm and be fine until breakfast. I keep college student hours and get up around 9 pm, so that would be 14 hours without food. So I eat close to bedtime, which is around midnight. My problem is that I always wake up around 3-4 am STARVING. What would be the best food to…

too much fiber?
I thought fiber was a good thing and the more the better. I have started monitoring my fiber, and when I go over MFP's amount, it yells at me with big red numbers. Isn't extra fiber good?

mint water
I've discovered the only thing that makes water at all appealing to me - mint! The problem is that I can't get it. I've used all my neighbor's mint, who had a lot growing since she is a botanist. If something is green and alive and grows, I will find a way to kill it, so me gardening for myself is out. I've resorted to…

the 5 PM panic
Around 5 pm I normally still have 600ish calories for the rest of the night. Intellectually I know that is an ok amount, but mentally I start to panic, thinking "I've got 7 hours before I have to go to bed and these are the only calories I get?" I get it in my head that I need a lot more to make it that long and start…

I just got a new scale and I'm screwed.
I've been going back and forth between dial scales, doctor's scales, and a Wii balance board to track my weight loss due to frequent travel. I get different numbers from all of these and have wanted to get a digital scale to use consistently. My dial scale at my apartment says I weigh 185 lbs (which is the number I have…

advice for a picky eater who wants to eat vegetables?
I would love some recipes for vegetable stuff, but I'm super picky. I won't eat anything with tomatoes, onions, or peppers in it, or sourcream. I'm willing to try any other vegetable, and I love mushrooms. My favorite vegetables are the ones in Chinese bean curd dishes, but I can't cook worth a damn and have literally set…

c25k on the elliptical?
Is anyone doing the c25k program on an elliptical trainer? I know some people do the treadmill. I have been trying so hard to start running again, but my knee is shot. I thought maybe the elliptical would be better on it. Any advice?

keeping my heart rate up
I was having problems with maxing out on my heart rate. Then for various reasons I've been put on a med that lowers blood pressure. Since I started that, I've noticed I can't keep my heart rate high enough to be in the aerobic zone. So now I'm not burning as many calories. Yes, I have a HRM, so this isn't speculation. Has…

knee injury and lunges
I've been doing squats, lunges (front and side), and dead lifts to work out my butt. I have been trying to do 3 sets of 10 each. I have a bad right knee that I have injured multiple times over the years - meniscus issues running track, dislocation from getting bucked off a horse, ect. I am able to do the squats and dead…

shin splints and walking
I've decided to stop running because my knee can't handle it. But I'd like to keep walking/hiking. The problem is that the last and final time I went running, I gave myself some very painful shin splints. Yesterday I swam, so they didn't bother me then. Today I want to walk. Will walking, medium pace, make my shin splints…

medicines that cause weight gain
I am on a couple of medications with weight gain side effects (an anti-psychotic and lithium), and I'm one of the lucky ones that this has happened to. One of my shrinks told me that with work, diet and exercise, I could counteract this. My other shrink said that if I gained the weight because of these meds, I wouldn't be…

question for weight lifters
I don't have access to weight machines, but I want to lift weights twice a week or so. I know I can buy hand weights at the store, but I'm more concerned with working out my thighs, butt, and stomach than I am with working my arms. What can I do that will work out my lower body? I have been doing pilates 3 times a week,…

1st day of c25k
It's scorching so I decided to workout on the treadmill in the tiny little gym at my apartment complex. Since this was my first day, and I haven't used a treadmill in a long time, I had to get a feel for what speed I could walk and what speed I could run. Right now I can walk 3.o mph and run 4.3 mph. I think I could do…

I have seen the light
I have been resisting the change from white or jasmine rice to brown rice for a long time. I LOVE jasmine rice and sushi rice and at one point I think I got ahold of some crappy quality brown rice, because it's been stuck in my head that I HATE brown rice. All that has changed. I ate some brown rice yesterday and it was…

chinese bean curd home style
I've also seen this called bean curd country style. This dish isn't in MFP's database, and I can't find nutrition on it with google. One site says it is 900 calories per serving, but doesn't say how big a serving is. Does anyone know serving sizes and calories for this dish?

NSV
Well, after a long absence on MFP due to the insanity of the end of the semester (yes, I know this is just an excuse), with two 15 page papers complete with proposals and annotated bibliographies, one poetry manuscript, two paper presentations, and grading 19 final exams...I am back! I have renewed my vows to record all…

my first NSV
I've been on MFP for around 2 months now. I've been trying to keep exercising, not always consistently though, and eating right, even though I haven't been logging it in my food diary. I've been frustrated that I've been bouncing back and forth with 5lbs lost and 5 lbs gained. I would offer up the excuse that I'm a full…

question for you experinced runners
I ran track back in high school. (This was back before fish grew legs and walked up out of the sea.) I was a sprinter and never could run more than 400 meters. Even pacing myself, I sucked. The only thing I was good at was running as fast as I could for short stretches. Now I'm older. I'd like to try training for…

room temperature
Question: does the temperature in the room where I am exercising make a difference in how many calories I burn? Because when I exercise in my apartment where I have no air conditioning I feel like I've worked twice as hard as when I do the same thing in my school's air conditioned gym. I don't have the money for a heart…

fluctuating numbers
So for the last week I've been bouncing back and forth between 190lbs and 195lbs from day to day. I know the prevalent advice is to only weigh in once a week, but my shrink thinks there is a psychological advantage to weighing more often so there won't be a huge surprise at the end of the week if your weight has gone up,…

cooking meat
Does the length of time you cook meat affect how many calories it has? For example, I like beef to be very rare and often just sear it 1 min per side. Am I eating more or less calories than my husband, who cooks the same beef 7 min a side? Or are we eating the same amount?

several short sessions vs one long session
I am just starting to exercise after a long period of recovering from knee surgery, so I'm completely out of shape. I'm not able to do one whole kickboxing session in one go, but I can break it up into 20 min segments over a couple of hours. Is this as effective as doing it all at once, or does letting my heart rate lag…
