several short sessions vs one long session

I am just starting to exercise after a long period of recovering from knee surgery, so I'm completely out of shape. I'm not able to do one whole kickboxing session in one go, but I can break it up into 20 min segments over a couple of hours. Is this as effective as doing it all at once, or does letting my heart rate lag between sessions negate the point?

It is a good way to get into better shape. If you overdo you will injure yourself in be in a bad spot, go slow and build up.
Several shorter sessions can also be good for busy moms and such. Just be sure you get your heart rate up for 10-15 minute of that 20.

more shorter sessions are proven to be better for fitness across the board, regardless of how fit you are!

Feel great knowing that 3 x 20 minutes sessions are better than 1 x 60 minute session!

    Whenever I exercise I do:

    10 mins elliptical
walk at a moderate pace for 4 mins (twice around track)
    10 mins elliptical
walk at a moderate pace for 4 mins (twice around track)
    10 mins elliptical
walk at a moderate pace for 4 mins (twice around track)

Of course I throw other stuff in there as well, but when you switch from slow, fast, medium, fast, slow etc. it is proven to be really effective at burning calories. Plus it will probably be better for your knee to change up your pace

I think it depends on the type of exercise and the goal of doing it.

There have been studies showing that micro-training sessions or resistance training helps.

For kickboxing, personally I think it would be better to do it all at once because you then don't have the warm up and cool down time.

However, at the end of the day, if it is going to be doing one session for 60mins or 3 for 20, both of these options are better than doing nothing :)
