defeating the midnight munchies

I am not one of those people that can stop eating at 7 pm and be fine until breakfast. I keep college student hours and get up around 9 pm, so that would be 14 hours without food. So I eat close to bedtime, which is around midnight. My problem is that I always wake up around 3-4 am STARVING. What would be the best food to eat at bedtime to prevent this? Protein? Carbs? Help!

    I would say - a glass of milk. Protein to get your hunger down, plus milk helps you sleep. Carbs are really better if you're going to do some cardio activity soon.

    If I'm starving before bed Protein is best for me... it takes longer to digest and I feel full when I wake up as well.. :wink: Don't forget to add a bottle of water to it.
  • As a Senior in college, I know wellll what you're talking about. I'm usually up till 2am, so not eating from 10-2 is super hard.

    I usually include oatmeal in my breakfasts and have no problem waiting till 1 for lunch. You could try making a 1/2 cup of quick 1-minute oatmeal (unsweetened) and add some Stevia (or other sugar substitutes) with raisins, or walnuts. Or maybe try an apple, or a cup of popped popcorn with spray butter.

    Other comments about protein are good too. Preferences vary from person to person.

  • i have the same problem and tend to eat the worst stuff at this time because im starving, half asleep, and want something fast....i have been trying to spred my meals out farther to decrease my hunger in general...its rough though...

    I find that a protein/carb mix holds me very well! I will have a string cheese or cheese stick and some fruit (either cherries, grapes, or watermelon), and I'm good to go.

    My roommate has this problem most nights. She said she has always been a snacker like this, even as a small child.

    The thing about drinking a big glass of milk in the middle of the night *sounds* good in theory, but if really look, you more than likely are drinking 2+ servings of it in a large glass. This is at least 200 calories. Then if you throw in sandwich, she has consumed enough calories to feed her lunch.

    One trick we talked about was brushing your teeth instead of eating. I know people use this 'trick' all the time when they feel they are bored or emotional eating.

    She said the other night she got up, skipped the food part, brushed her teeth, drank a glass of water, and went back to sleep no problem.

    Who knows.....
