shin splints and walking

I've decided to stop running because my knee can't handle it. But I'd like to keep walking/hiking. The problem is that the last and final time I went running, I gave myself some very painful shin splints. Yesterday I swam, so they didn't bother me then. Today I want to walk. Will walking, medium pace, make my shin splints worse? I don't want to end up with stress fractures.

Find a dirt trail if you can. Much softer. Or the grass on the side of the track...

Walk at a slower pace and then ease into working harder. If your shins start to hurt while walking stop:)

I think I have shin splints too...I ran for the first time ever on the road about 3 days ago. At first I just thought it was muscle soreness but now I think it's shin splints from looking it up online. It's a dull ache on the front lower leg that won't go away...exactly like the websites said. It sucks and I wish the pain would go away!! Anyone have any remedies??

I went to a running store and was fitted for shoes last weekend. I was talking to the guy that was helping me about the fact that my other pair of shoes gave me shin splints. While the shoes I was walking in did attribute to the fact, he said if you really focus on pushing off with your toes wile you are walking, that that helps a lot. It helps to stretch out the front of your lower leg.

    Hope that helps a little!

I went to the doctor a while back for shin splints. He said to wrap them in bandages, tight without being too tight, and keep on walking. I wouldn't run! And make sure you ice them at night and take an anti-inflammatory. Those were the instructions he gave me.

I don't think I "walk properly" either! I think I shuffle, for lack of better words :indifferent:

I find it easier to walk on trails or other surfaces...everytime I go to the track, it gets worse....so I head to the woods.
