Digestion and energy release carbs, protein and fat
I'm looking for info on digestion and energy release for carbs, protein and fat. Say I eat a meal consisting of all three at 09:00. How long does it take for those three things to get digested? At what point, and for how long do they provide energy? Thanks a lot.

Moved: argh! My bread is not available (UK)
I just moved and found out that Aldi sells another type of budget bread here. My normal bread comes in at 107kcal/slice (on average. looks different on the scale), while the local budget bread only at 80. The slices are extremely thin. Not happy as I love bread more than the things I put on it. I usually take 6 slices of…

Low glycaemic for dummies, with a big but
I have the feeling I'm reacting quite extremely to carbs, similar to reactive hypoglycaemia. Long-term sugar test two weeks ago was within the reference range, slightly on the low side. I thought lets try not eating carbs, or at least low-glycaemic carbs tomorrow and see if that makes a difference to how I feel at the…

Don't trust calorie burns from apps!
I can sync my running app with MFP, and the data gets uploaded here. Yesterday I ran a small 4km at approximately a slow 8min/km pace, but a fairly high HR as I'm currently not feeling well. Using 0.86*weight(kg)*distance(km) gives me 240kcal (net) Using the METs table I get 216kcal (net) (I think my actual calorie burn is…

Gaining again?
Had a massive shock last week when a friend whom I haven't seen in over two years told me I'm the thinnest person she knows. She also keeps on asking whether I eat enough. I would say I am as I'm not losing weight (same weight for nearly 2 years now). I guess I suffer quite badly from body dysmorphobia as I don't see…

'starving' if having second breakfast too late
Just looking for recognition. Fyi: blood sugar, long term blood sugar and challenge test have all been normal for years. Just mentioning it first. Fyi2: I'm not dieting but eating at maintenance, being normal weight. Below problem also occurred when I was still 40 lbs heavier and slightly overweight. Whenever I delay my…

Any Pebble users?
My Pebble Time 2 will maybe arrive next month (I pledged on kickstarter) and the core maybe in January. Has anyone of you a Pebble and is using it as a health watch? What's your experience with it? I suppose calorie burns will be off like with every other device, but more general things such as step counting?

MFP broken again? Double diary entries
Is MFP broken again? Whenever I add food to my diary from the database it gets listed twice. Clicking to delete the double entry it only vanishes after repeating this click. *sigh* This is on the website, btw. Pretty annoying.

three weeks of traveling: no gain
Yep, I think I have a good idea about how much I can eat without thinking too much about it. Came back from a 3 week work holiday (archaeological dig) in Southern Europe yesterday evening and just stepped on the scales for the first time since then. Prevacation I was at 56.6kg, now I'm 57.7, which is probably including the…

Bikini not accepted? (UK, but US perspective also nice)
I went a few times to my local pool here in the UK, and found I was the only person wearing a bikini. I did feel awkward but as I don't have a swimming suit this is what I had to wear. There was nothing in the pool rules about it, and I did phone in advance and asked. When I was on business in the US I chose a hotel with…

rant: upper body strength completely lacking
I simply cannot build upper body strength. Been trying it for three years now without success: first bodyweight, then lifting heavy, now bodyweight again. Yea, I have nice upper body muscles, and certainly for a woman past 40 but I still can't do a pushup, still no pull up, still no under table pullup with lower legs…

Hypothyroid and water weight
Yes, I know one generally holds onto more water when hypothyroid. One thing I noticed since my GP upped my medication is that my 'water profile' over the course of a week changed quite a bit. Usually my weight was always lowest on Sunday or Monday morning and then would rise bou just over 2lbs until Friday, then drop…

stupid idea: long distance hike?
I've been toying with the idea of doing a long distance hike, a 93 miles path that ends not too far from my home. The suggested itinerary is 7 days, but I'd love to try it in 4 days. Is that crazy? Fitness background: I can walk 5miles in 70 minutes without feeling exhausted, I was always able to walk 12 miles without any…

Leg day: Ouch!
I slacked big time with strength training over the last couple of months.. well, basically since October last year. Good thing is: my muscles seem to remember how to look cool and I don't seem to need to much work to get back to my old look. The bad thing is: DOMs! I've only been doing YAYOG and so far focused on core and…

Is anyone here doing Freeletics? How far can you get there without taking a subscription? Thanks.

raw vs. prepared weight ready-made meal confusion
What the... not keen on ready-made meals, but anyway. Bought a pack of 'pulled pork with BBQ Sauce' from UK Aldi today. The calorie amount is mentioned as 304kcal per 1/2 pack (1 serving, contains 2 servings of 128 grams oven cooked). But the back of the package also mentions '380 grams' in the package. Does more than 120…

Stomach acid/digestion question
I'm suffering from occasional reflux flareups, and my GP mentioned the other day that it might as well be caused by too little acid and PPI might be a very bad idea based on the reflux patterns I'd observed. He suggested a baking soda test that was negative, and based on his recommendation I bought betaine hcl capsules.…

HRmax research - statistics and background needed
I will have a 48h ecg, and I know the cardiologist will complain about my high workout HR. He already told me my HRmax should only be around 178, and if it get higher I should not be working out at all. :/ He said though that my heart appears to be normal and can't explain why I should not work out with a higher heart rate…

Looking for website with running burns, including net calories
I tried searching but can't find it. Someone posted a link to an online calculator for running calorie burns which output the net calories as well. Someone remember this website? Thanks a lot.

"You don't build muscles in a deficite"
I've read above comment here many times. yet I just did a search on pubmed and found several articles suggesting that it's possible to build muscles with a very moderate deficit. Where does this quote come from, and are there any properly done, peer reviewed studies with a big enough sample group to support this?

Yay, finally 5k under 35 minutes
I know, some people call this relaxed running. For me it was a fight all the way thought. For the last 4km I really had to fight hard to keep up the speed and literally counted every 100m. Hey, I come from running 5k in 42 minutes, thus that's a huge improvement for me. Plus I just came out of an asthma flare-up. While the…

Asthma meds and sport: influence on muscles
Got another flare up of whatever my breathing problems are. Doesn't seem to be asthma, but asthma meds work. I use symbicort as reliever for various reasons and noticed that my legs feel somewhat weak if I try to run, I get doms from it the next day, and then my leg muscles are so obvious that a colleague asked whether I…

coughing after run
*sigh* bit annoying. If I run slow and long distances I'm usually mostly fine. If I do a faster 5K I immediately start coughing as soon as I'm done running. At first every time I exhale there's the feeling of a dry cough and after a while it gets better. Tried a fast 1 mile run the other day and ended up coughing for 3-4…

Protein to preserve muscles (brocience?)
I so often hear that people eat/drink lots of protein to preserve their muscle mass when dieting. For me it sounds like utter bull. I can't honestly imagine my body saying: "oh, protein incoming! Let's munch on those fat reserves instead of muscle tissue." Can someone please point me towards some research (with papers…

group for after C25K? First 10k
I graduated from C25K a while ago, however, only at the beginning of January did I run 5km under 40 minutes for the first time. Yes, I'm really slow and have serious problems getting faster for some reason. Anyway, I've been training for my first 10k, which will take place in just about 10 days if it doesn't cancelled due…

Unpleasant lungs/throat running in cold weather
Anyone has a workable solution for running in cold weather? If I do my lungs and throat feel really rough and hurt for hours afterwards. I can only breathe through my mouth as I don't get enough air through my nose, so I guess that's the issue. Always had problems with very cold sensitive breathing organs, also as a child.…

funny HR
*sigh* so I visited a cardiologist today because my GP thought I should see one. He hold me the problem I'm having is unlikely and he never heard of something like this. So I wonder if someone ever heard of something like this. As long as I can think I have difficulty walking up mountains. On steep inclines I force myself…

Most stupid exercise thing you ever did
Lighthearted, and maybe a warning to others. Alternatively something to laugh about. I have a few of those. Best two: Was on a visit in the Middle East recently and went running in the evening, making use of the lovely weather. Now, crossing roads at roundabouts is somewhat adventurous as car drivers don't really take care…

Fun with HR sensor
So I wore my optical HR sensor last night just out of curiosity. I was mainly curious on how often I wake up. The app I was using also came back with a calorie estimate: 233 cal for 9 hours of sleep. This would give me a BMR of 621 comatose calories over 24 hours  In case you're wondering: yes, I have a good estimate…

Can't maintain energy level during workout
My energy for workouts doesn't seem to be the best around: When running my energy stores seem to be depleted after just over 7km (less than 5 miles) in just under an hour with the result that my HR jumps upwards, I lack the energy to run on, stumble over my own feet and can't do math sums anymore. Basically I feel…
