Diet.. for want of a better word.
I've been trying to cut fat / gain muscle since July now and am defo more strong looking. People keep telling me I've lost weight etc, and I can see it in my face and clothes. Now.. as I start training for strongman I am concious that a defecit is no good anymore. I've not logged my food but my old habits are creeping…

CF with Powerlifting?
Hi, I'm a competing powerlifter (only one comp but enjoyed). I don't have a competition this year till July and am hoping / trying to lose some lbs while still building my strength. I realise this won't increase dramatically while I'm losing weight but would really like to shift 14-28lb of stubborn weight.. I've been…

Hi
I have been lurking for a few days, but thought I'd pop in and say hi. I'm weight training and training to compete in a 'single lift' competition in December. I have the option of literally a single lift, or to do the three (deadlift, bench press and squat) with the total of the two highest being my overall score. I am…

First comp result!
oh yes.. it was comp day! 3 clean squats max was 60kg, benched 30 and 35kg (failed 40kg) and deadlifted 70, 80 and 85kg (new pb as clean lift). :) Super happy with 180kg overall score and brought home trophy for 82.5kg masters group - Welsh Open Champion 2013! Onwards and upwards for next comp in May! Vid here:…

2012 v's 2013
As the year finishes and another starts.. what were your achievements for 2012 and what your goals are for 2013? Personally, after being diagnosed with a mental health disorder I returned to a former 'love' of lifting weights in the summer. With the intention of just enjoying workouts even in bad weather or the dark (my…

Tips for first comp
I've done it.. sent off application and money yesterday for my first competition. They pulled the date forward a month so I'm not 100% sure I'll hit my goal of 100kg deadlift but have hit a PB in the gym of 1x1 of 90kg so was happy with that as it took me closer. Now.. any top tips for a novice in a comp? I'm excited but a…

Stripping it back to 5x5
Hi, I started off doing a 5x5 plan and have moved on to upping reps slightly but want to strip back my work out to 5x5 for ease of knowing what I'm doing, covering it all in 3 sessions and generally not burning out. I'm planning to do a competition in 6 weeks (powerlifting so squat, deadlift and benchpress). My current…

You know you had a good workout when...
Ok. thought this would be a bit of fun.. I'll start.. when you get home and on route to shower, reach for a DVD above your head for your daughter and get dizzy enough that you have to sit down with head between your legs..

Anyone else split the routine?
I'm working towards powerlifting comp in December, and have been advised a good 'split' is Push, Pull, Legs so you work different area's 3 days a week rather than just the regular 5x5 lifts. Anyone else do this? I've been doing 5x5 reps since starting up again. But do like the division of the days as I can add more…

Hi Ladies
After the lovely welcome I got when looking into 5x5 before, I am back! You likely won't remember my 'quick' drop in, but I'd managed to join a gym that didn't have free weights - so was using machines. Well, I'm off to join a different gym tomorrow and can't wait! Enjoyed my time (short) at my current gym and have the new…

Smiths Machine - only option for squats
Hi all, I know this is a trouble hotspot, but my gym only has a smiths machine for squats (no free weights)... so today I was shown how to use it at my request. I worked on still maintaining the correct position as I would free weights. Will the weight I lift compare to that I can lift on a free weight squat? or be less…

NSV - No longer care..
I no longer care when I get in and out of the swimming pool! Having spent the first 5 years of my eldest daughters life avoiding taking her swimming I vowed to get over it and I did. But I've had a gap of about 9 months swimming (for one reason and another) but today took my eldest and her friend, with my 7 year old.…

weight lifting helps prevent diabetes..
Thought some fellow lifters would find this interesting.. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/08/06/health-weight-lifting-slashes-diabetes-risk_n_1747574.html Shame they used a girl using girlie weights but it's all good.. it had my husband supporting my choice of weight lifting! lol

Smiths Machine
Does anyone do this plan on a smiths machine and dumbbells? My gym don't have free weights (booo) but am working a 5x4 on machines. However the squat machine is a Smiths machine and I found a trainer / gym staff member who was happy to show me it tomorrow and work out a plan for me around bodybuilding / weight lifting so…

Newbie.. am I making the right choice?
Hi all, I have worked down my weight over 7 years.. yes a long long time but it's a lifetime journey and I have also had a baby and breast fed for 17 months (when I didn't 'diet' or lose any weight). So the amount of time isn't as it seems. But.. now I've been struggling the last 12 months with a mood disorder and…

Strength Training Machines...opinions?
Is it 'ok' to use them working myself up from 20-30kg as a baseline? or should I just head for the free weights? I am training alone and hit the strength training machines yesterday after gym induction, can certainly feel my chest / pecs today which is great but all else feels fine. I'm wondering if I'm better off on free…

Suggestions - good lifting plan for newbie
I did my gym induction today.. and a 45 min workout after. I've been working out with my girlie weights at home (large reps / low weight) in 30 Day Shred and some local strength training girlie classes but am in mind to change this method in line with guys and New rules for lifting for women.. I am not 100% sure on the…

Gym induction.. what to expect?
I'll confess to having been 220+ lbs at my heaviest, and now down to 182. I used to (before my heaviest) level out around 154 ish, so have never been totally slim but lifted weights / strength trained for fun in those years. With this in mind, I am heading back to the gym... It's 18 years since I did an induction as the…

Introduction from a PMDD sufferer
Hi, I'm Jane / Porffor (means purple in Welsh), I'm from London but live in Wales, UK. I'm 40. Have 3 gorgeous girls aged 13, 7 and 2. I'm married and a full time Psychology degree student. Ironic that seems now as I've been diagnosed with a mental health disorder PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). It means that I am…

B6 for PMS / PMDD (depression symptoms)
I've been having real lows before and during my monthly cycle for a number of months now and today saw my GP (dr) who has prescribed B6 for a month at 150mg a day to see if that improves things over the entire month. I wondered if anyone has taken this for depression symptoms or PMS/PMDD? Did it make a difference? Is there…

Gall Bladder Removal - Diet
Hi all, I had my gall bladder out some 12 years ago now but never got any info on diet etc, I had worked out that cheese set me off into pain before it was removed but that was about the level of my knowledge. I have become intolerent to beans (which is a shame as I like them) in the last 12 months and end up with cramping…

Clean Snack suggestions - small / packed in protein?
Hi all Wondered if we could share snack ideas that are low ish cals and high in protein. I'm hoping to find some bits I can prepare that are 'clean' to take with me to Uni in the week. I've found a small breakfast muffin in the P90X2 nutrition guide which looks interesting bits like that would allow me to pack my bag with…

P90X2 How do you log it?
Did the P90X2 X2 Core workout - 45 mins and sweating - lots of improvement scope but enjoyed it and did better than I thought I would. How do you log it calorie wise? As circuit training like the 30 DS? Or different? I don't have a HRM and am worried it'll appear too much calories given the rest periods. Thanks

Zone out...
anyone else find they zone out of the ups and downs of life while working out to this? I realised last night - as I did 30 DS level 2 really late due to DD1 watching a music award show till 10pm that I was desperate for my work out. I really did get in the zone mentally. Day 15 felt wonderful too - Halfway there!!

P90X next or something else?
I'm doing 30 DS and am thinking ahead, I'm struggling a little in Level 2 (my lower back was injured in a riding accident some years back and I had twinges last night so am wondering if it's too much back work - level 1 was fine). I am thinking I could re-do 30 DS but wanted to keep my eye on the ball and think 'what next'…

Progress - keeping positive
My scale hasn't moved much since I started Uni and gained 7lbs. but I'm still lighter than I was last June so that is something.. Trying to be positive and look at inches and visible changes.. here is one I can see. 30lb gone... shows in my body and face. Summer '10 - I remember having posed for this feeling good…
