Energy equation - the best article I've ever read

Layman's terms vs actual scientific explanation?
Does it really truly matter if someone doesn't care to have the physiological mechanism of a particular function (fat loss, muscle building, energy metabolism etc) explained to them in detail? Or if they use general terms like "toning up"? Where does the line fall between making someone feel stupid and just going along and…

Your definition of HIIT
It came up in another thread that everybody said what HIIT wasn't, but nobody said what it was. And since we know that in the fitness world (and even more specifically MFP world) people make up individual definitions for everything (actual definitions be damned) let's hear your definition of HIIT.

Has a study like this been done yet?
Basically measuring the amount of surplus calories on the speed at which muscle is built. 2 groups of people following the same exercise plan. One group eats at a 250 calorie surplus, one at a 500 calorie surplus. At the end of X weeks does each group gain the same amount of muscle? Macros, meal timing, supplements, etc…

Irreversible Damage (Health & fitness knowledge base)
In this age of vast amounts of information and the ability to also spread misinformation just as quickly, will there always be a battle to overcome the false statements and half truths in the health & fitness industry that have come to be taken as truth? Will other misinformation creep into the arena and complicate things?

Basic human physiology & nutrition in schools
Should a greater emphasis be put on basic physiology and nutrition to be taught in schools. With some of the things you see people ask around here, it seems that a lot could be accomplished with teaching people the basics about carbs, protein & fat and how the body processes the food that you eat. Maybe it would head off…

Forbidden vs not wanting
Does this simple change in semantics & mindset make a difference? You see so many people spouting that nothing is forbidden & no foods should be excluded. What if you simply choose not to eat something any longer because you just don't want to? Does the reason matter?

Why do people like DOMS?
You see this fairly often, and I've never understood it. I've workout out in some fashion nearly my entire life, and I have never enjoys DOMS. That was probably one of the least favorite things about working out.

DVRT & USB Training
Has anyone ever heard of this? Go to a gym where they offer it? It's a progressive & systematic training protocol using sandbags of varying size/weight with different handles on them for different exercises. I've found it to be a great at home training compliment to my body weight exercises and just wondered if anyone else…

Outdoor workouts? (besides running, hiking etc)
Does anyone else take advantage of the nice weather and workout outdoors? Now that the weather is warming I love moving my workouts to the yard. I can do everything I usually do in the house outside just as easy, if not easier for some movements.

Who taught you to lift?
Reading post after post of the lack of knowledge or the flat out misinformation given out by trainers at gyms and the broscience running rampant, it made me extremely thankful to have had really good teachers when I started out lifting. My college roomate was a technician and information sponge when it came to lifting &…

Hating on abs, I get it, but who doesnt want a strong core?
Maybe it's because of the overwhelming focus that people think crunches will give them abs, but I see so, so often that the advice is given not to bother doing any ab/core work at all and to just get the work as part of your big compound lifts like squats and deads. My question is why? There's a lot of people that could…

Experienced Marathon/Half Marathoners Input needed
Ok here’s the deal. I sat out running my city’s race this year, opting to volunteer. It was an awesome experience and now I’m anxious to run again next year. I’ve done 2 full marathons and a few halfs. I said I was done running full’s, but am considering one more since I turn 40 next year. My half PR coming during training…

rybo's cut post
I'm a little behind, probably not going to officially enter, but i do want to give a go at cutting. I have 2 before pix in my profile, can someone tell me how to post em? My bf% on the calculator was 14.97% which seems accurate.

Body weight only strength training
Does anyone else follow a program like this? At this point in my life, this is going to be my next "fitness adventure". I'm not looking to gain or lose weight, I am good where I am, I just wanted to increase the amount of strength training I do to go along with my running. I've found a couple websites out there, most give…

Figuring out in-race fueling
Besides all the other issues I had during my 1st marathon, I'm also wondering if I had my racing fuel strategy planned out well enough. I know which gels I can eat & I like the taste of I just need to figure out amounts. But in an effort to get my body used to running on low glycogen levels, I've not been taking many…

February Mileage totals
Let's hear em! We had an extra day this year. How far did you run, walk, or bike? I have a solid 130 running miles

Racing a half 5 weeks before a full & juggling the final lon
I’m trying to plan out my long runs leading into my marathon while still allowing myself a reasonable opportunity to race the half for a decent time. As it stands I’d hit my 1st 20 miler 2 weeks before the half. Then I’m not sure what to do the week before the half. I could juggle my timing so that my 1st 20 is the week…

Even pace vs even effort during the race
Any thoughts from experienced marathoners, especially pertaining to a hilly course? Intuitively it seems like if you tried to maintain an even pace, you are essentially adding “speed” bursts throughout your race in order to keep that pace on the up hills. Where as even effort lets you slow down/speed up depending on…

Help understanding the science behind the LSD
Ok, I’ve read as much as I can about the importance of the LSD run in marathon training and how its better to go slower than faster and all the physiological stuff that happens during that type of run. Where my disconnect still lies in understanding all of this is…if you run all your long runs slower than your marathon…

Year's end milestones?
With only 51 days left in 2011, is anyone trying to reach a mileage milestone? I have only 85 miles to go to hit 1,000. But with a really busy schedule, darkness setting in so early, and losing the week after christmas to run at all, it's going to be quite the challenge to make it. It will be imparative for me not to skip…

Not another running question (just curious)
For those who run often, whether in training for a specific race or just for fitness, I'm curious if you ever work on things to improve your run outside of the typical types of training runs? I guess more accurately do you work on form, stride, breathing, or staying relaxed? Or do you just run? Last night's run I was all…

Running maintenance program (opinions wanted)
I tried doing a little research on line without finding much either way. Assuming one already has a solid base, I’m wondering what your opinions are on maintaining a good level of running fitness by running more days/week & fewer miles/day, or less days/week & more miles/day. Just as an example I’ll use a 20 mi week. Is it…

A few ??? for seasoned marathoners
If I am averaging maintenance weeks of 23-28 miles and long runs at 13+, is 10 weeks enough time to ramp up and get in 3-20 mile runs? A ramp up I was thinking looks like this: 15 16 18 20 15 22 15 22 10 Race Would I be better off ramping slower but running my 20's on back to back weekends? Or cutting down to only two…

Extended rest during a training plan?
I’m training for a marathon and my plan consists of running 4x week. Between work travel & resting a minor injury, I have rested (not run) 10 of the last 13 days. My mileage last week dropped significantly. But my injury has passed. My question is now that I am back on track, can I jump back in where I left off @ 4x /week,…

Race decision help
I’m in the process of training for a marathon and plan to run a couple “tune up” races. I’m not sure which to choose for this situation. There is a 5 & 10 mile race on the same day. Should I Run the 10 mile race instead of my 12 mile training run for that weekend? OR Run the 5 mile race AND do the 12 mile training run on…
