Low Fat/Cal Gumbo (Recipe)
This is my first recipe post here, and I'm not going to lie - it has a rather advanced technique. It's worth trying, though, because traditional gumbo is definitely NOT diet friendly. The problem with traditional gumbo is the roux. For a pot of gumbo this size, the roux would be one CUP of oil and one cup of flour.…

Exercise-Induced Insomnia
Anybody have experience with exercise insomnia? I've recently been having a lot of trouble sleeping on nights that I have Muay Thai. Last night I was up until after 4am. I used to have insomnia quite a bit when I was fatter, but that's all-but disappeared since I've stopped drinking so much and begun losing weight. This…

Sprained my Ankle
I lightly sprained my Achilles Friday night at Muay Thai class. I finished the class, limping a bit. I've been limping around all weekend, taking ibuprofen, alternating hot and cold, etc. I'm still planning to hit tomorrow's class, but I'm a bit worried. I'm going to try a home-grown tape job. Wish me luck!

Buttermilk
I made mashed potatoes tonight. On a whim, I replaced butter and milk with cultured buttermilk. They were awesome! They tasted like butter and sour cream - nobody in the family even noticed - and I removed literally hundreds of calories from the whole dish. Try it!

How Do "Normal People's" Clothes Fit?
Here's an interesting question we've been discussing at work. (Several of us are on weight-loss journeys.) For people who've not been fighting weight all their lives, how do their clothes fit? I mean, most of us here have probably had "goal" -sized clothes, and "fat" -sized clothes in our closets because we've yo-yo'd back…

Can't Eat Enough
There's no way I'm going to be able to eat enough stuff on these new Muay Thai days. I just had a smoothie for no reason other than to add Calories, and I've still got 975 left today with all meals done. Without eating a double cheeseburger and fries, how am I going to get 3000 Cal on these days?

UK'ers - Mexican Food?
A question for people in the UK... How much exposure, if any, do you have to Mexican food? I have some UK visitors coming next week for meetings and I need to arrange the lunch catering. Normally we'd do a Mexican buffet for one of the days. Is that going to be totally unfamiliar to these folks? Sorry if that sounds like a…

Lion King 3D
Anybody seen this in the theater? I'm trying to decide whether it will hold any appeal for a 10yr old who's owned the movie her whole life, but never seen it on the big screen.

NSV Clothes
I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to wear extra-large clothes again! Regular XL, it seems like they still pay some attention to quality and fit. I've been in double-X for a long time and those things are just tents - like clothing manufacturers just get to XL then stop trying after that. My build is such that XL…

Dr Who?
I know we have a lot of Brits on MFP. Any Dr Who fans? Season finale on BBCAmerica is in two days! I'm stoked. You guys have already seen it, though right? <no spoilers>

Not Sure Why I'm Losing So Fast
I know, Boo-Hoo right? It's not that I mind terribly, but I'm curious why I seem to be losing so fast the last week or so. I've dropped almost 4 pounds within the last week and I can't explain it with just the calories I'm eating. There has been no exercise at all in the time period in question (shame on me) and I'm…

Diet Soda w/o Aspartame or Sucralose (in US)?
I want to avoid aspartame and sucralose but still have the occasional soda. (Let's save the "diet soda is evil" comments for that other thread to save time, shall we?) Does anybody know of a diet soda available in the US that still uses saccharine or maybe stevia? Even tab now adds aspartame. Even acesulfame K is okay with…

Homemade Yogurt
Not exactly a recipe as much as a process. If you eat a lot of yogurt, you should try try this. It's incredibly easy and the results are outstanding, much tastier and fresher than commercial. It's quite a bit cheaper than buying yogurt, too, since you can make a GALLON of yogurt for about $3. All you need is some quantity…

Indian Food Suggestions
I know next to nothing about Indian food except that I like it. One of my employees (and Indian) wants to take my wife and I to dinner at an Indian restaurant. I'm all for it, but I don't know enough about the cuisine to make any kind of informed choices about what to eat. I will probably just end up making that day my…

Throwing Away Food - Hard
Anybody else have trouble throwing away food? I definitely do. Growing up, I never went hungry but my family was rather limited in funds. "Eat what you take" was always a big deal in our family. To this day, I'm very much a clean my plate guy, but that's pretty easy to solve by just making smaller plates. Similarly, I have…

Steak & Shake Chili - Use With Caution
This thread is for people who are trying to learn to eat normal foods in moderation. I don't need to hear from clean eaters, how all the sodium is going to ZOMG kill me, that there's way too much fat to possibly lose weight, or whatever. Save that for another thread, please. But IF Steak & Shake is something you'd ever…

Cabbage!
I don't know if you like cabbage, but Wow is it a great diet food! I just had 1/2 a head of chopped cabbage, fried in with two chopped up pieces of bacon and drippings, some soy and rice wine. It takes about 20 minutes on low to get soft and brownish-translucent, but then it tastes like the inside of an egg roll. Yum, yum!…

Info on Calories Req'd for Kids?
Does anybody have any information on the number of calories that kids need? I do ALL of the cooking for my family and since I'm dieting, they're eating lower calorie healthier meals, too. But what may be a 600 Calorie dinner for me ends up looking like 250 or so on a picky 10-yr old's plate. The bulk I'm adding for me is…

Football Without Beer
So today's the first real day of football. I've watched a couple of games today and I didn't have any beer. I can tell, though, that this is going to be a challenge going forward. I have GALLONS of beer on tap in my garage, Folks, and none of it is "light". I'll be making some lighter beers soon, but everything out there…

MFP Exercise Calorie Estimates Methodology?
Let me first apologize because this topic has been covered pretty well in the past, but that makes it that forum paradox where search returns TOO much information to be useful. Like many others I've been reading about, I think that MFP is estimating my calories from exercise WAY high. That's making me very leery of eating…
